Xbox Store Today: Forza Horizon 3, FIFA 17, XCOM 2, more

The Xbox Games Store is heading down under this week as Forza Horizon 3 is now available to download. Developed by Playground Games, Forza Horizon 3 brings the series to Australia for some coastal racing in more than 350 of the world’s snazziest cars. And players who purchase it through the Xbox Games Store will receive a digital copy of the game for the Xbox One and the PC.

Also available this week is FIFA 17, the latest soccer sim from EA Sports, for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. EA Sports has upgraded the game engine for FIFA 17, while also adding a story-focused career mode known as “The Journey.” Do you have what it takes to make it in the Premier League? Now’s your chance to find out.

Professional soccer players might seem like a completely separate species, but Xbox One owners will also be able to battle it out with actual extraterrestrials this week in XCOM 2, a tactical alien invasion simulation from 2K and Firaxis. XCOM 2 was previously released for the PC earlier this year, and this time around, players will fight to take back the Earth, which is under alien rule.

Elsewhere on the Xbox Games Store this week, Sierra Games will continue their rebooted King’s Quest adventure on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 with a brand new chapter, Snow Place Like Home. King Graham is still telling stories, and this time he spins a yarn about the time he rescued Prince Alexander from Queen Icebella’s Frozen Castle.

Finally this week, the Xbox Game Preview program grows by one with the release of Everspace, a space shooter with roguelike elements, from Rocketfish.

As usual, more information on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

FIFA 17, XCOM 2, Contra, more added to PS Store

Soccer stars and a double dose of aliens lead the way for this week’s PlayStation Store update…

We start things off with FIFA 17 for the PS4 and PS3, the latest soccer simulation from EA Sports. This time around, the publisher has added a new story-focused career mode known as “The Journey,” where players take control a teenager trying to make it in the Premier League.

But if you’d prefer to battle an alien invasion, you’ve got two choices on the PlayStation Store this week. Firaxis and 2K will bring the tactical fighting of XCOM 2 to the PS4, while Konami will launch the original arcade version of Contra on Sony’s console.

Finally, players who’ve been following the King’s Quest saga will be able to check out Chapter 4: Snow Place Like Home on the PS4 and PS3 this week. In this episode, King Graham recounts the time he had to rescue Prince Alexander from Queen Icebella’s Frozen Castle.

More information about all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And, as always, a complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts is available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

New Retail Releases: Forza Horizon 3, FIFA 17, Yo-Kai Watch 2, More

newreleases092716

Soccer players (excuse me, footballers), racecar drivers, invisible Japanese spirits, a sneaker-wearing hedgehog, bloodthirsty aliens, and even bloodthirstier zombies highlight this week’s new release roundup…

FIFA 17 will be available in stores this week for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. In addition to a series of graphical upgrades and gameplay tweaks, the latest soccer simulation from EA Sports adds “The Journey,” a story-based single-player mode where players take control a teenager trying to make it in the Premier League.

Also new this week is Microsoft’s latest racing sim, Forza Horizon 3. The PC and Xbox One game recreates Australia as a playground for open-world racing, which players can dive into with more than 350 cars.

Away from the fast cars and furious footballers, Nintendo and Level-5 will release Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls. The creature-collecting games will include hundreds of new Yo-Kai, invisible spirits believed to exist out in the world. But with the game’s Yo-Kai Watch, players can see these supernatural creatures, and capture them.

Keeping with the otherworldly theme, 2K Games will bring XCOM 2 to the PS4 and Xbox One this week. After debuting on the PC earlier this year, the publisher is expanding the strategy game’s reach to new-generation consoles… and not a moment too soon. The alien invaders have enslaved humanity in the sequel and it’s up to players to guide the XCOM to victory against a foe that’s taken control of the Earth.

While the enemies of Dead Rising 2 are a bit dumber than a race of hyper-advanced aliens, they’re no less dangerous. Available this week for the PS4 and Xbox One, Dead Rising 2 was originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, but the re-release will still put a ravenous horde of undead between motocross racer Chuck Greene and the anti-zombie cure he needs for his daughter.

Hopefully, Chuck can avoid those zombies using Sonic-like speed, but a Blue Blur will be busy with Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, which will be released this week for the 3DS.

Finally this week, Microsoft is cramming a free copy of Minecraft in with their newest Xbox One S 500GB Console Bundle. So if you’re interested in picking up an Xbox One S, and you love Minecraft, it’s a fairly good deal.

FIFA 17 players will be able to go on “The Journey,” the franchise’s first story mode

Believe it or not, EA Sports is adding a story mode to this Fall’s FIFA 17. Available only on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One (FIFA 17 will also launch for the PS3 and Xbox 360), “The Journey” will follow fictional rising star Alex Hunter through his first year in the Premier League, both on and off the field:

Immersed in “The Journey,” fans will live their story on and off the pitch as Premier League prospect, Alex Hunter who is looking to make his mark. Fans will visit new football worlds, meet new characters full of depth, and navigate emotional highs and lows of their unique story arc through decisions off the pitch, their performance on it, and character interactions throughout the 2016/17 season while playing for any of the 20 Premier League clubs.

In addition to “The Journey,” EA Vancouver is tapping into the Frostbite Engine to make FIFA 17 the most realistic soccer simulation ever. In addition to thousands of new animations, the developers is specifically throwing their focus behind these new mechanics:

FIFA 17 Features

  • Set Piece Rewrite – New penalties, free kicks, corners, and throw-ins bring creativity and variety in every dead ball situation.
  • Physical Play Overhaul – U.S. Patent-Pending Pushback Technology changes the way players physically interact in every situation and introduces a new shielding system that gives fans more control when in possession or battling to win the ball.
  • Active Intelligence System – A brand new intelligence system gives players the ability to better define and classify space to make smarter decisions off the ball. Players will utilize several New Run Types like fake, direct, and stunted runs to stay even more active off the ball.
  • New Attacking Techniques – New options in attack give fans more ways to create chances and finish in front of goal. Send teammates in with a Threaded Through Pass and put exciting goals away with a Driven Finish or Downward Header.

Another new trailer, this one showcasing FIFA 17’s new mechanics, can be found after the break. FIFA 17 will be released this Fall on September 27. (more…)

FIFA 17 will use the Frostbite Engine for the first time when it launches this September

Soccer fans will have an all-new FIFA experience to try out this Fall, as EA Sports has announced that FIFA 17 will be developed using the publisher’s Frostbite Engine for the first time. In development at EA Vancouver, the publisher believes their Frostbite technology will add “depth and emotion” to the pitch when FIFA 17 is released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One this September.

“Frostbite unlocks a whole new world of possibilities for the FIFA franchise and its fans,” said David Rutter, the Executive Producer on the FIFA franchise. “We have never been as excited as we are today about the future of football and the experiences we are going to deliver in FIFA 17.”

To create the most authentic game possible, EA Sports also recruited four world-class players to lend their expertise to the EA Vancouver team: James Rodriguez of Real Madrid, Anthony Martial of Manchester United, Eden Hazard of Chelsea FC, and Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund. We’ll get our first look at FIFA 17’s evolution during the EA’s EA Play E3 Presentation on Sunday, June 12, at 4:00 PM.

The Frostbite-powered FIFA 17 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 27. The game will also be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360, though without any of the improvements found in the new-generation version.

2016videogames-header

The Spring and Summer months are currently less dense with new releases than the first three months of the year, but that should change fairly soon, especially since publishers have staked a claim to every week from the beginning of April to the end of June with at least one big new release dropping every seven days.
