Square Enix: Final Fantasy XV will finally be released in 2016

finalfantasyxv-header

2016 is going to be a big year for the Final Fantasy franchise. Remakes and re-releases of both Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy IX are in the works, and Director Hajime Tabata is hard at work on the next game in the series, Final Fantasy XV. The fifteenth Final Fantasy game began life in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, an action-oriented (and, at the time, PS3-exclusive) spinoff to Square Enix’s “Fabula Nova Crystallis” project. But after a number of delays, a title change, and a platform change, it looks like Tabata is finally ready to release the game for the PS4 and Xbox One in 2016.

He delivered the good news to Final Fantasy fans everywhere via the Square Enix Blog this morning:

We will finally release FFXV this year, in 2016! In development, previous phases required wisdom and strength. However, moving forward the final phase will focus on effort and willpower.

I vow to you all that every member in the team will do their best to the very last possible moment taking responsibility and pride in their craft.

We will do everything we can do to finish FFXV to create an experience we are incredibly proud of and one that you will enjoy and treasure.

While we still don’t know the exact date of Final Fantasy XV’s release, we do know that Square Enix is planning a simultaneous global launch, a first for the franchise.

Final Fantasy XV will be released in every territory on the same date

finalfantasyxv-header

Final Fantasy XV is expected to be released sometime in 2016. We don’t yet know the exact date, but we now know that the game will receive a simultaneous global launch… a first for the series. Director Hajime Tabata confirmed the good news to to GameSpot during last week’s Gamescom expo:

“This may be something that we are little bit embarrassed to talk about, but really, this is the first time that we’ve done a packaged, standalone Final Fantasy game with a simultaneous global launch, so we didn’t have the setup to deal with that, really. The first thing we had to do was rearrange our internal structure to create something that could do that. That was the first important work on the project.”

Typically, it takes three-to-six months after its Japanese launch for a game in the Final Fantasy series to make its English-language debut. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the most recent game in the series (not counting Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its expansion) and it made it across the Pacific in a relatively quick two months and 21 days.

Final Fantasy XV is in development for the PS4 and Xbox One.

New Final Fantasy XV trailer is all about fathers and sons… and a 2016 release date is teased

Square Enix released a new trailer for Final Fantasy XV at the 2015 Gamescom expo that is all about fathers and sons. Specifically, about the “strong bond” that exists between King Regis and his son, the Crown Prince Noctis. It is Noctis who ventures out into the world with his comrades after the Niflheim army attacks his homeland of Lucis. Can he save the world? Probably, as this trailer tells us, he is the chosen one after all.

I gotta say, I really enjoy the traffic jam with its bizarre mix of coupes from the 1930s sitting alongside modern supercars, all being directed by knights in full plate armor carrying machine guns.

If you were hoping that Square Enix would announce a release date for Final Fantasy XV, you’re unfortunately out of luck. But GameSpot did have a sitdown with Director Hajime Tabata during the show, who said that the game won’t be released this year, but “It’s going to be before [2017].” So if it’s not out this year and 2017 is too late, that means we’ll probably be playing Final Fantasy XV sometime in 2016.

However, Tabata also said an official release date announcement would likely take place during this year’s PAX Prime expo.
