LittleBigPlanet creator announces Tearaway
Media Molecule is at it again! They’ve been working on an amazing PlayStation Vita game, Tearaway, in which you play as a character named Iota living in a whimsical paper world. He’s on a mission to deliver a special message to you, the player. In fact, his cute little head is an envelope! There’s a stamp and everything. Check out the announcement trailer above for all the cuteness, as well as MM’s uncanny ability to choose the perfect music for all of their videos, ever.
You’re basically a god to this paper world – you can “poke” your fingers up through the back of the Vita to fight enemies and solve puzzles. You can also blow into the microphone to cause gusts of wind, or shout into it to make Iota give a mighty roar. You can even take pictures of stuff in your real life environment to make skins for creatures in the game. Oh, and you can make that elk in real life, too. Just download this papercraft model!

The Last Guardian hasn’t been canceled, will still come to PS3
Worried about The Last Guardian never making it to your living room? Well, some good news has surfaced: it’s still coming to the PlayStation 3.
Eurogamer asked Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, about the status of the title during a Gamescom interview. “The team is still working on it very hard. There are certain technical issues they’ve been working on. That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title,” he said.
The game, which was due out last year, seems to be riddled with problems and rumors, especially since Fumito Ueda left Sony Japan. The game has been absent from every major video game event for the last year, much to the disappointment – and wariness – of fans. But the problem, Yoshida said, is a technical one, and has nothing to do with redoing the game for PlayStation 4, or Ueda switching his role to a contractor.
“We had the game playable. At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done,” Yoshida said.
With the PlayStation 4 rumored to be coming out late next year, that gives The Last Guardian a window of a little over a year to come to the PlayStation 3. Perhaps Sony wants it to be the system’s swan song?
Killzone: Mercenary coming to Vita in 2013
Sony has released the first trailer for their upcoming PlayStation Vita title Killzone: Mercenary. The FPS has been designed specifically for the Vita’s graphical capabilities and unique additional touchpad controls to offer a new take on the Killzone franchise. For the first time players will be able to fight alongside the Helghast as well as the ISA as they take on mercenary contracts during the brutal war between the two sides. The game will allow plays more customisation than previous games as they select weapons ideal for a specific job.
No word yet on how it fits in within the Killzone timeline, especially given the explosive ending of Killzone 3. I guess we will just have to wait until 2013 to find out in this new chapter.

Capcom asks players to “Remember Me” in May 2013
Take one part Total Recall and add in a dash of… actually that’s it. Capcom’s next original project, Remember Me, looks like a new twist on Philip K. Dick’s classic sci-fi story. But instead of the hulking hugeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger or the svelte suaveness of Colin Farrell, Remember Me stars Nilin, a female “memory hunter” who has had her own memory erased.
In the world of Remember Me, memory hunters “[have] the special ability to break into people’s minds and steal or even change their memories.” OK, so a dash of Inception made it into developer Dontnod’s first game as well.
This genre soup will reach stores in May 2013 on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. But you can check out the first trailer above. It’s pretty impressive, even if it does look a little familiar.
“New” Star Wars 1313 trailer recycles previous gameplay footage
LucasArts has released a new gameplay trailer for Star Wars 1313, their “gritty” and “mature” new take on the Star Wars universe. Sadly, the entire thing seems to be made up of recycled footage from the trio of trailers the publisher unveiled during E3.
Naughty Dog shows more of The Last of Us at Gamescom
Naughty Dog has unveiled a new trailer for its survival action-adventure The Last of Us specifically for the Gamescom expo taking place in Cologne, Germany. It starts with a new cinematic before launching into previously seen in-game footage, cut to the warbling vocals of Hank Williams Sr. It moves with a tenacious pace, as the song cuts us with its apt lyrics, although I personally would like to see it edited to Hurt by Johnny Cash.
Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson will be in attendance at this year’s Gamescom, explaining the depths they had to go to in order to convey their performances as the post-apocalyptic survivors Joel and Ellie. There will also be a playable demo, so expect to see more about The Last of Us in the coming days.
Dead Space 3 set for February 5, 2013; Limited Edition announced
Gamescom 2012 opens tomorrow in Cologne, Germany and many game publishers have begun to push out new announcements ahead of the big European show. For example, EA has announced that Dead Space 3 will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on February 5, 2013.
Not content to just announced the release date, the publisher has also confirmed that everyone who pre-orders the horror title will receive an upgraded “Limited Edition” complete with bonus gear:
“First Contact” Bundle
First Contact Suit: This unique EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) suit was built by the SCAF (Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces) for encounters with “foreign entities.” It sports a flamboyant golden finish to provide protection from long-term space exposure and thick armor for… unspecified reasons. The suit was given the nickname “First Contact” by the scientists who made it.
Negotiator Weapon: While technically classified by the SCAF as a “scientific instrument,” the gold-plated “Negotiator” is loaded with some surprisingly aggressive hardware. The overclocked, top-mounted Tesla Beam is capable of bursting a man-sized organism into several pieces with a single shot. The bottom-mounted Linegun appears to have been built with the sole purpose of cleanly dismembering organic tissue from a distance.
“Witness the Truth” Bundle
Witness Suit: These insulated suits were worn by a SCAF deep dig team assigned to exhume the darkest secrets of Tau Volantis. Whatever they found locked deep in the ice changed them forever. When they emerged weeks later, they were covered head to toe in strange graffiti and claimed to be “Witnesses to the Truth.”
Evangelizer Weapon: A modification of the standard AL-2 used by the Sovereign Colonies Legionaries, this version sports a souped-up AL-2g assault rifle on the top with an Emerson 2100 “Big Boy” tactical shotgun on the bottom. The surviving “Witnesses” of the SCAF deep dig team dubbed it the Evangelizer and decorated them top to bottom with strange symbols.
Be afraid Necromorphs, be very afraid.
Catwoman added to Injustice: Gods Among Us
Ms. Selina Kyle, Catwoman to the Gotham City underworld, has been added to Injustice: Gods Among Us by developer NetherRealm Studios.
The DC Comics fighter will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in 2013 and you can check out the Gamescom trailer, which stars everyone’s favorite cat burglar, above.
