Gears of War 3 gets two “epic” special editions
Epic Games’s latest Video Documentary takes you “Inside the Wicked Workshop” to get a look at the two collector’s editions they have planned for Gears of War 3.
Chris Perna, Epic’s Art Director, takes viewers through the process and mindset required to create the unique art piece at the center of the $149.99 Epic Edition, a giant Marcus Fenix statue. Perna also showcases some of the beautiful artwork found in the Epic Edition’s exclusive 96-page art book.
A $79.99 Limited Edition will also be available that contains a fabric COG flag, an Octus Service Medal replica, an unlockable multiplayer skin of Adam Fenix (Marcus’s father) and the “Personal Effects of Adam Fenix.” All of the contents of the Limited Edition will be included in the Epic Edition.

Gears of War 3 Beta Survival Guide
I love Gears of War multiplayer: great action, eye-popping graphics, over-the-top violence, and an overall fun experience. The only problem is I suck at it. A lot. As in turbo-charged Hoover suckage. My kill/death ratio is embarrassingly low, and I sometimes feel like I spend more time waiting to respawn than actually playing the game.
So if you’re a casual player or brand new to the series and are getting your butt handed to you in the beta, I feel your pain. The franchise has attracted a seriously hardcore following and I am constantly amazed (and sometimes frustrated) by how good the players are. It can get bad enough to potentially turn off the average or casual player, which is a shame because they will miss out on a fantastic multiplayer shooter.
However, if you’re one of those people, don’t despair. Take it from me: a little time, patience and smarts will have you holding your own even against the toughest opponents. Hopefully this guide will help you enjoy all the fun the beta has to offer. No, you still may not get the most kills, but at least you won’t feel like cannon fodder either. (more…)
Gears of War 3 Beta Impressions: New Features, Classic Chainsaws
Gears of War fans were naturally upset when the upcoming final chapter of Marcus Fenix’s trilogy was delayed for marketing purposes, but that anger quickly turned into excitement when Epic announced that it would run a public multiplayer beta. While Epic is using the beta to gather valuable technical data to tweak and refine the game, players are just happy for an advanced opportunity to chainsaw their buddies into bloody giblets. (more…)
Gears of War 3 beta begins on April 18 for Bulletstorm owners, April 25 for GoW3 pre-orders
Microsoft and Epic Games have finally released the full beta schedule for Gears of War 3.
Buyers of Bulletstorm will gain access to a preview version of the beta on April 18. This sneak peek of the beta will feature Team Deathmatch mode on four new maps (Thrashball, Checkout, Trenches and Old Town). Trenches and Old Town actually earned their place thanks to winning Epic’s Facebook poll that asked gamers which maps they wanted to play in the beta.
On April 25th, the beta expands to include all gamers that pre-ordered GoW3 from GameStop. The pre-order invite comes with every version of the game: Standard ($59.99 USD), Limited ($79.99) or Epic ($149.99). The expanded beta will run through May 15 and include two additional game modes: Capture the Leader and King of the Hill.
During the beta, players will be able to unlock a host of bonus features as well as exclusive content available in the full version of the game that releases on September 20. Hit the jump for the full list of unlockables. (more…)
Gears of War 3 beta set for April
Microsoft held a press event in San Francisco today and dropped a few details about the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta.
The beta will begin sometime around mid-April and will include four new maps and three new Versus Multiplayer modes. But Epic Games is leaving the decision of which maps will appear in the beta up to the fans. If you head over to the Gears of War Facebook page, you can vote on which maps you think should be included in the beta. Your choices are: (more…)
Gears of War 3 emerges on September 20
If things had gone according to the original plan, we’d all be sitting down to play Gears of War 3 in a few weeks time. Instead, the trilogy-capping game was delayed to an unspecified “Fall 2011” date. But now, Microsoft and Epic Games have confirmed that the game will make its worldwide debut on September 20th.
Marcus, Baird, Dom and company will continue their fight against the Locust Horde (and “new threats”) in the aftermath of GoW2 throughout new maps and with new weapons. Microsoft has promised that more details about all of the game’s new features will be revealed in the future, including the full scoop on the Gears of War 3 “Official Multiplayer Public Beta.”
My only question is, if this is the end of the trilogy, what’s Gears of War: Exile going to be about?
Mad Catz returning to Gears of War accessory line
Before Gears of War became the sensation it is today, our favorite third party accessory manufacturer Mad Catz teamed up with Epic Games to release a series of faceplates, controller skins, and other goodies to celebrate its launch. This partnership continued on with Gears of War 2 and today Mad Catz announced a similar deal for the third game in the franchise, Gears of War 3. Due out this fall, the game will launch with a line of specially branded controllers (not just skins), headphones and other peripherals to celebrate the game. Darren Richardson of Mad Catz said: “Our Gears of War agreement is consistent with our strategies to align Mad Catz with the industry’s most popular and anticipated game titles and to develop and globally distribute high-value products that enhance the gaming experience. Gears of War is a marquee relationship for Mad Catz and helps us further grow and diversify our industry-leading portfolio of branded videogame accessories.”
Mad Catz has previously partnered with Activision to deliver a set of Call of Duty accessories which have been pretty decent. Here’s hoping they rock it with Gears 3 as well.
Note: Mad Catz has not, unfortunately, announced shooters or tumblers as pictured above as accessories, but it would be awesome if they did.
