All Articles: Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics will be released for the PC on April 28, 2020
Gears Tactics was first announced at E3 2018, but it’s been shrouded in mystery ever since. Microsoft didn’t bring the tactical spinoff to this year’s E3 Expo, nor did it have a showing at the consolemaker’s recent X019 event. Thankfully, that all changed at this year’s Game Awards.
Unveiling a trailer that mixes cinematic moments with gameplay footage, The Coalition and Splash Damage have attempted to bring the spirit of the Gears franchise to the turn-based genre. Here’s what they had to say about their collaboration on Xbox Wire:
Developed by The Coalition and Splash Damage, Gears Tactics is set 12 years before the first Gears of War. Cities across the planet Sera are beginning to fall to the monstrous threat rising from underground – the Locust Horde. With the government in disarray, a squad of survivors emerge as humanity’s last hope. Outnumbered and fighting for survival, players must recruit and command a squad to hunt down Ukkon, an evil mastermind who makes monsters.
Gears Tactics features an immersive and character-driven story, one that follows the defiant soldier Gabe Diaz, voiced by Noshir Dalal, to rescue and build up a squad in a journey of leadership, survival and sacrifice. Playing as Gabe, you’ll customize your squad and equipment to prepare your troops to face tough enemies, upgrading squad skills and outfitting them with loot collected in challenging missions.
Microsoft also confirmed that Gears Tactics will be released for the PC on April 28, 2020. An Xbox One launch will follow at a later date.
New trailers for Gears Tactics and Ori and the Will of Wisps will debut at the 2019 Game Awards
This year’s Game Awards will be held on December 12, and as usual, Geoff Keighley and company are busy gathering a mind-bending collection of World Premiere Trailers to debut during the broadcast. Yesterday, they revealed two trailers that fans can expect to see on Twitter… and they both hail from Microsoft.
Though the consolemaker just revealed a ton of new stuff at their X019 event in London, Keighley confirmed that World Premiere Trailers for both Gears Tactics and Ori and the Will of Wisps will make an appearance at the 2019 Game Awards. Both games are currently in development for the PC and Xbox One, and both are expected to be released in 2020.
The nominees for this year’s Game Awards will be announced on Tuesday, November 19, which will probably be followed by a few more trailer announcements over the next month, but we can surely look forward to a few surprises on the big day as well.
The Coalition confirms Gears Tactics is also in development for Xbox One
Microsoft put a big spotlight on Gears of War during this year’s E3 Expo, revealing three new titles in the franchise that included a direct sequel (Gears 5), a mobile-centric spinoff (Gears Pop), and a PC-exclusive RTS prequel (Gears Tactics).
While we didn’t learn much about that last one, Xbox One owners interested in a tactical take on Gears got some good news this week.
Rod Fergusson, the Studio Head of The Coalition, confirmed (via Twitter) that Gears Tactics will also be coming to the Xbox One. He also added that development of the game is being spearheaded by Splash Damage, the same team responsible for the multiplayer portions of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Gears of War 4.
We still don’t know a whole lot about Gears Tactics (and we definitely have no idea when it’ll be released), but now we know a bit more than we did yesterday.
Gears of War franchise goes turn-based in the upcoming Gears Tactics
The 2018 E3 Expo may be over, but we’re still digging through all the huge announcements and trailers that dropped during the big show… like Microsoft’s announcement of Gears Tactics.
The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson got on stage at Microsoft’s E3 Briefing to talk about the turn-based strategy game, which is currently in development exclusively for the PC:
I’m excited to also announce a true Gears of War PC experience in a completely different genre, Gears Tactics. You create a whole new squad, 12 years before Gears of War 1, as they hunt the Locust monster-maker responsible for destroying whole cities. It’s our take on the classic turn-based strategy genre with a character-driven story, faster [and] more aggressive gameplay, a customizable squad and equipment, and of course, it wouldn’t be a Gears game without massive boss battles.
Gears Tactics is currently in development at Splash Damage, and Microsoft plans to announce more details about the game at a later date. The short teaser trailer from the Microsoft E3 Briefing has been embedded above.
