The Last of Us wins Game of the Year at 2014 GDC Awards
The 2014 Game Developers Choice Awards were handed out last night and The Last of Us took home “Game of the Year.” Naughty Dog’s unquestioned dominance in this year’s awards season really makes you wonder, does it ever get boring for Neil Druckmann and company? I’m guessing no, but after winning several BAFTAs, multiple DICE Awards, the Writer’s Guild Award for Videogame Writing, and a Warp Zoned Golden Pixel Award, it stops being surprising. In addition to being selected as “Game of the Year,” The Last of Us was also honored with the “Best Game Design” and “Best Narrative” awards.
But The Last of Us wasn’t the only winner last night. Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was picked as the “Best Handheld/Mobile Game” while IGF darling Papers Please took home the award for “Best Downloadable Game” as well as the “Innovation Award.”
The only other multi-award winner of the night was BioShock Infinite, which was recognized for its sights and sounds with the “Best Visual Art” and “Best Audio” awards. Finally, the low-key Gone Home (and its developer, The Fullbright Company) was picked as the “Best Debut” while the bombastic Grand Theft Auto V took home “Best Technology.”

The Last of Us takes home Best Game at 2014 BAFTA Awards
The 2014 BAFTA Awards were handed out yesterday in London and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us was crowned the big winner of the night. The Last of US was declared “Best Game” by the British Academy and also took home four additional awards: “Action and Adventure,” “Story,” “Performer” (for Ashley Johnson’s portrayal of Ellie), and “Audio Achievement.”
The Last of Us, an American game, shared the spotlight with two distinctly British titles. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V (“Best British Game,” “Game Design,” and “Multiplayer”) and Media Molecule’s Tearaway (“Mobile & Handheld,” “Family,” and “Artistic Achievement”) won three awards apiece.

Gone Home is coming to consoles this year
The Fullbright Company has announced (via their blog) that they plan to bring Gone Home to consoles this year. The console edition of Gone Home will be published by Majesco’s indie imprint, Midnight City.
Gone Home is an adventure game told from the first-person perspective of Kaitlin Greenbriar, who has returned to her Oregon home and found it deserted. As Kaitlin explores the empty house, players attempt to piece together what happened to the rest of the Greenbriar family.
Gone Home was one of 2013’s most critically celebrated titles, garnering multiple nominations from the the DICE Awards, GDC Awards, and the BAFTAs. Fullbright was not ready to announce a release date or possible platforms for the console port, but they’ve confirmed that more information will be available soon.
The Last of Us, Tearaway, Gone Home lead this year’s GDC Awards
The nominees for the 2014 Game Developers Choice Awards have been announced and The Last of Us, Gone Home, and Tearaway lead the field with five nominations apiece.
The Last of Us and Gone Home will be competing for this year’s Game of the Year award alongside Grand Theft Auto V, Super Mario 3D World, and Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V are also in the running for multiple awards as each has been nominated in two additional categories.
Other multi-category nominees this year include The Stanley Parable, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Device 6, and Papers, Please.
This year’s Game Developers Choice Awards will be handed out on Wednesday, March 19 at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2014 Game Developers Conference. The full list of nominees can be found after the break. (more…)
GTA5 is “Game of the Year” at the 2013 VGX Awards
The first ever VGX Awards (formerly known as the Spike TV Video Game Awards) were held last night and the best games of 2013 were once again crowned by GameTrailers.com’s Geoff Keighley (with an assist from Community‘s Joel McHale). The general consensus among the Internetatti is that the show still doesn’t know what it wants to be and that the “intimate studio setting” (and McHale) made the whole thing feel a bit bizarre. But what about the award winners?
In what is sure to be the first of many, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V was named “Game of the Year” by the VGX Advisory Council. Rockstar’s crime saga also took home “Best Soundtrack.” But, the developer missed out on “Studio of the Year” honors. That award went to Naughty Dog for their work on The Last of Us. Their apocalyptic story was also awarded “Best PlayStation Game.” “Best Voice Actor” (Troy Baker), and “Best Voice Actress” (Ashley Johnson). Other multiple award winners include indie sensation Gone Home (“Best PC Game” and “Best Independent Game”) and BioShock Infinite (“Best Shooter” and “Best Song in a Game”).
