Xbox Store Today: GTA5, Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, many more
Aside from LittleBigPlanet 3, today’s Xbox Games Store update looks like a copy-and-paste of yesterday’s PlayStation Store update. As such, here’s what Xbox One and Xbox 360 should definitely be looking forward to this week:
- Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto V for the Xbox One, adding a first-person mode, extra missions, a graphical upgrade, and a few other tweaks.
- Ubisoft dives back into the Far Cry franchise with Far Cry 4 (Xbox One, Xbox 360), another whacked out first person shooter that takes the action to the Himalayas. And as the trailers keep reminding us, you can wreak havoc while riding on the back of an elephant.
- BioWare brings back the Dragon Age series with Dragon Age: Inquisition (Xbox One, Xbox 360), a huge new RPG that looks like it’ll dwarf the much smaller Dragon Age II.
Other games of note this week include Deep Silver Dead Island spinoff, Escape Dead Island (Xbox 360); the next-gen launch of 2K’s WWE 2K15 (Xbox One); and yet another Rabbids game froom Ubisoft, Rabbids Invasion (Xbox One, Xbox 360).
More details on all of these games (and a few others) can be found after the break. (more…)
GTA5, Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and many many more added to PS Store
Another double digit explosion of new releases hit the PlayStation Store yesterday, but four titles stand head and shoulders above the rest. Care to take a guess what they are? Trust me, it shouldn’t be too difficult…
- Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto V for the PS4, adding a first-person mode, extra missions, a graphical upgrade, and a few other tweaks.
- Ubisoft dives back into the Far Cry franchise with Far Cry 4 (PS3, PS4), another whacked out first person shooter that takes the action to the Himalayas. And as the trailers keep reminding us, you can wreak havoc while riding on the back of an elephant.
- BioWare brings back the Dragon Age series with Dragon Age: Inquisition (PS3, PS4), a huge new RPG that looks like it’ll dwarf the much smaller Dragon Age II.
- And finally, Sony has pushed out LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS3, PS4), the latest game in their game-building franchise and the first solely developed by Sumo Digital.
If you’re looking for additional details on even more new releases (including Escape Dead Island, Samurai Warriors 4, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd, and many others), you can find them after the break. New Releases: Super Smash Bros Wii U, Far Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto V PS4/Xbox One, More
After years of revealing screenshots and teasing trailers (including one 35-minute “Extravganza“), Nintendo is finally ready to release Super Smash Bros. For Wii U this week. It’s a big week for Nintendo in general as the publisher will also release Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire and Pokemon: Omega Ruby for the 3DS along with their first wave of Amiibo figures.
What can the rest of the publishing world do to compete? A lot, actually. Rockstar will bring Grand Theft Auto V to the PS4 and Xbox One for the first time while Ubisoft will release the Himalayan-set Far Cry 4 (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One) too. Those are both massive open-world games… though only one lets you ride an elephant. Also available this week is BioWare’s latest RPG, Dragon Age: Inquisition (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One); Sony’s latest LittleBigPlanet game, LittleBigPlanet 3 (PS3, PS4); and Deep Silver’s Dead Island spinoff, Escape Dead Island (PC, PS3, Xbox 360).
And if you’re looking to pick up some previously released major releases on new platforms, now’s your chance. WWE 2K15 makes the jump to the PS4 and Xbox One, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor downgrades to the PS3 and Xbox 360, and Watch Dogs finally makes its way to the Wii U.
And you can find even more new releases after the break. (more…)
Grand Theft Auto V is getting a first-person mode on PC, PS4, Xbox One
Rockstar hasn’t been shy in letting the world know that the PC, PS4, and Xbox One upgrade to Grand Theft Auto V will be no mere port. From “across-the-board graphical and technical improvements” to the wide range of bonus content for players who already own the PS3 or Xbox 360 edition, the latest version of GTA5 will be jam-packed with never-before-seen stuff. But Rockstar wasn’t finished as they recently told IGN that the game will also include a first-person mode:
Police cars are stacking up in the cul-de-sac below and a helicopter is hovering somewhere overhead. I can’t really see where it is, but I feel its presence, and the cops open fire. So I make a run for it, vaulting over a fence into a parking lot, where I jack a car, climb in, and as I look down to hot-wire it, I see there’s a bullet hole in my in my forearm and blood is running out.
I’ve never had a GTA experience like this before, and that’s because it’s all playing out in the first-person.
We’ve said before that Rockstar rebuilt Grand Theft Auto V for the new-generation consoles, but they really mean it now. Each animation in the game had to be redone to work in first-person mode. That kind of attention to detail is Rockstar’s trademark and they weren’t going to ignore it now. Of course, if you’d rather play in third-person mode, players can switch between the two views at any time.
Grand Theft Auto V will be released on November 18 for the PS4 and Xbox One, with the PC version following on January 27, 2015.

Sadly, the PC version has been slightly delayed and won’t make it out before the end of the year. But PC players won’t have to wait long, Rockstar has confirmed that the PC version of the game will launch on January 27.
Rockstar is packing Grand Theft Auto V for the PS4 and Xbox One with “a range of major visual and technical upgrades” to make the game “more immersive than ever.” In addition to higher resolution visuals and increased draw distances, PS4/Xbox One owners can look forward to:

The online component has also received a major boost as 30 players will be able to join in at the same time. And everyone who who pre-orders the game will receive $1,000,000 in in-game cash.
Finally, Rockstar released a new next-gen-specific trailer for your viewing pleasure. “A Picket Fence and a Dog Named Skip” is embedded above.
The Last of Us returns to the top of the best-seller list in July 2014 NPD report
In previous years, the best-sellers chart for the month of July would normally be dominated by the latest entry in the NCAA Football series. But EA Sports canceled the series last Fall, so a new emperor is sitting upon the July Throne in 2014. Or rather, an emperor we’ve seen before in a spiffy new set of clothes.
This is a roundabout way of saying that the Remastered re-release of Sony’s The Last of Us (combined with more sales on the PS3) pushed the game to the top of the best-sellers chart. July was a pretty sparse month as far as new releases go, but 505’s Sniper Elite III also cracked the top ten. It was number eight… with a bullet.
You can check out July’s complete top ten list (which includes May releases Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 hanging tough in the top five) after the break. (more…)
June 2014 NPD: Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 are the top-selling titles once again
Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 once again reign supreme over the monthly sales chart as The NPD Group has confirmed the two titles were #1 and #2, respectively, in their June 2014 top-selling games report. The two games were part of a trend that included other May releases such as Minecraft (#3) and Wolfenstein: The New Order (#7).
The only June releases to crack the top ten were EA Sports UFC (#4) and Tomodachi Life (#9),
With Microsoft’s Kinect-less Xbox One hit store shelves in June, so the battle between the next-generation heated up just as the thermometer did. According to Joystiq, the PS4 once again topped the Xbox One, though all console sales more than doubled (a 106% increase, to be exact) the month of May. Ultimate, the entire industry saw a 24% increase in sales over the last month… and that includes a big jump in Wii U hardware sales too.
