Halo 4 live-action trailer introduces an ancient enemy
While perhaps not as artistic as previous Halo trailers, Microsoft and 343 Industries revealed their live-action trailer for Halo 4, “The Commissioning,” at this year’s E3 Expo. Featuring a combat deck that looks identical to the one from Battlestar Galactica, as well as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her sexy bald chick, it ultimately shows what a live action Halo movie could be.
The trailer shows the commissioning of the UNSC Infinity, which we are told during a less-than-rousing speech has been retooled for exploration after the war, coming under attack by what the trailer dubs an ancient enemy.
The E3 gameplay demo showed Master Chief and Cortana battling The Covenant as well as this new enemy, a synthetic race believed to be older than the Forerunners themselves. And it appears 343 Industries is living up to their promise of moving the Halo franchise away from being a straight shooter to something that involves more mystery and exploration elements.
Halo 4’s Infinity Multiplayer is said to be the “ultimate” multiplayer mode
In a final bit of Halo 4 news today, Microsoft has revealed the first details of the game’s “Infinity” multiplayer mode.
Halo 4’s multiplayer mode begins on the UNSC Infinity and tasks players with creating their own Spartan-IV supersoldier. From there, 343 Industries is giving those players the option of competing in your standard set of multiplayer matchtypes (call “War Games” here) or in a new episodic co-op campaign known as Spartan Ops (which can also be played solo).
Whichever mode you choose, the Infinity multiplayer system will include several improvements over previous Halo games:
Total Combat Freedom: Halo 4 features a vastly expanded suite of new multiplayer modes, weapons, vehicles, armor abilities, a new loadout and player progression system, and a new armor modification system that introduces gameplay-enhancing customizations for the first time in a Halo game.
Player Progression: The Halo 4 player progression system goes beyond simple aesthetic upgrades, encouraging players to invest time and effort to create a Spartan that looks and plays the way they want. Players can earn and activate combat enhancements called “Specializations” based on the style of play they engage in, from stealth to all-out assault, and everything in between.

Microsoft unveils official Halo 4 box art
Check it out, the Master Chief is going to fight the aliens from Independence Day!
OK, not really. But the image to your left is the official box art for Halo 4 and it is awesome. Be sure to check out the enlarged version so you can in all the details.
Oh, and if you thought Microsoft already released the official box art for Halo 4, you’d be right. The first “official box art” for Halo 4 was revealed at PAX Prime 2011, but it is much less cool than the new cover.

Add Halo: The Thursday War to your book library this October
Microsoft and Tor Books have announced the next novel in Karen Traviss’ Kilo-Five trilogy, Halo: The Thursday War, will be released on October 2.
The novel is a sequel to Halo: Glasslands and will give fans their first taste of the “events and circumstances that will come to define the state of the Halo universe in Halo 4.”
Instead of the big action moments of the previous Halo novels and games, Traviss said she wanted The Thursday War to “focus on what it feels like to operate in a fragile ceasefire that’s turning into a mass of small, unpredictable wars where the enemy is much harder to spot and define.” She added, “This is a messy conflict seen at close quarters by real people with their own problems, whether those people are human, alien, or artificial intelligences.”
Halo: The Thursday War picks up immediately where Halo: Glasslands left off, with forces on Earth and among the Covenant threatening a peace that is precarious at best. With a splinter group among the Sangheili [Elites] pushing for war, some human colonies rebel against earth authority; and as ONI policy continues to shift with the volatile situation in space, the discovery of a trove of Forerunner technology on Onyx provokes leaders on Earth to seek uses for it in the conflict. For the fight is far from over…
Halo: The Thursday War will be available in both hardcover and audio formats.
This is the complete Halo timeline
Frank O’Connor, the Halo Franchise Director at 343 Industries, has mentioned the shooter’s “series bible” many times in the last few years. O’Connor isn’t just developing new games in the bestselling franchise, he’s trying to create an interconnected world that would make George Lucas gasp in astonishment.
Now, CVG has pulled together the many different threads of the Halo franchise (six original games, one remade game, six trade comics, nine novels, two short story collections, and an animated film) into one cohesive timeline, and what it means for Halo 4. Even if you don’t play the games, it’s an interesting read:
Under Bungie and Microsoft the Halo timeline was malleable, but for 343 it’s set in stone. Halo’s extended universe is informing everything about Halo 4, from its setting on a Forerunner Shield World to the enemies drawn from a point 100,000 years in the past. Halo 4’s protagonists were first introduced inthe pages of Primordium and Cryptum and its new technologies debuted in Glasslands.
Catching up with it all could take a while, so we’ve done the hard work for you, pulling together threads from every piece of Halo fiction and ironing out the contradictions for adefinitive wrap-up of one billion years of fiction.
Halo 4 live action web series to debut this year
Last show, gamers were treated to fantastic webisodes based on Mortal Kombat and Dragon Age II. This year, Microsoft is getting in on the act with a new webseries to promote the release of Halo 4.
The gamemaker has partnered with Machinima to distribute Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn ahead of the game’s November 6 release. In addition to Machinima’s YouTube channel, episodes will also be available via the Halo Waypoint, Microsoft’s community portal for all things Halo, and eventually, on home video formats.
Forward Unto Dawn will tell its tale over five episodes, with each episode lasting about 15 minutes. The series will follow the Master Chief in the early days of the Human-Covenant War and “how he inspired a young UNSC cadet who will eventually become a leader aboard the UNSC Infinity spacecraft.” This cadet will go on to play a major part in Halo 4’s storyline.
“Every time we do a live-action commercial the audience says, ‘We want to see more so that we can explore the Halo universe a little bit more,” said Frank O’Connor, Franchise Development Director at 343 Industries. “Demand grew more and more out of the two little vignettes we’d previously produced.”
Microsoft plans to announce the creative team and cast behind Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Halo 4 to be released on November 6; Red vs Blue helps you save the date
Halo 4 is just a few months away and we still don’t really know all that much about it. But we learned one very key piece of information today as Microsoft has announced a November 6 release date for the game.
To prevent this news from slipping your mind, 343 Industries has recruited the team at Rooster Teeth to ensure we all remember. “Red vs Blue,” the floor is yours (that means watch the video above).
Oh, and in case the video doesn’t help you remember Halo 4’s release date, there’s another red and blue battle taking place on November 6 that might be more memorable: the 2012 Presidential election.
