With the Game Awards in the rearview mirror and the GDC and DICE Awards coming up, we are definitely smack dab in the middle of awards season.
Earlier today, the Writers Guild of America chimed in with their nominees for the 2018 Writers Guild Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing.” Four games will compete for the writing award next month, and the list includes Bethesda’s Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, TinyCo’s Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, Guerrilla’s Horizon: Zero Dawn, and the “Longshot” Story Mode from EA’s Madden NFL 18.

Warp Zoned’s 2017 Golden Pixel Awards: A New Beginning for Video Games
When we looked over the gaming landscape at the beginning of 2017, we opined that game publishers had done their best to wipe the slate clean throughout all of 2016. Many of gaming’s most mysterious projects were finally released, Nintendo closed the door on the Wii U, the VR revolution was in full swing, and upgraded versions of the PS4 and Xbox One were on the horizon.
In these first few days of 2018, I think it’s safe to say the last 12 months definitely fulfilled that promise. Nintendo’s Switch roared out of the gate in March and the consolemaker filled the calendar with big titles on “Day One” and throughout the rest of the year. Night in the Woods, Persona 5, and Golf Story told new kinds of stories that gamers had never seen before. Cuphead delivered a decidedly retro side-scroller packaged within a unique visual playground packaged. And someone even managed to create a fun Friday the 13th game.
It was quite a year, and you can find more of our favorites from 2017 after the break. (more…)
Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn lead all nominees at 2018 GDC Awards
The organizers of the Game Developers Conference have announced the nominees for this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards.
Nintendo and Sony have a lot to celebrate this year as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon: Zero Dawn tied for the most nominations, with six apiece. Both games are in the running for “Game of the Year,” and both were also nominated in the “Best Audio,” “Best Design,” “Best Technology,” and “Best Visual Art” categories. Breath of the Wild tacked on one more nominations for the “Innovation Award,” while Horizon nabbed a nomination for “Best Narrative.”
Both games should probably be considered the frontrunners for the “Game of the Year” award, but they’ll also have to compete with PUBG Corporation’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Platinum Games’s Nier: Automata, and Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey for the coveted honor.
Outside of the “Game of the Year” competition, Studio MDHR’s Cuphead captured three nominations for “Best Audio,” “Best Debut,” and “Best Visual Art.”
The 2018 GDC Awards ceremony will take place on on Wednesday, March 21, at 6:30 PM (Pacific Time). The full list of nominees, and all the Honorable Mentions, can be found after the break. (more…)

Horizon: Zero Dawn – The Frozen Wilds launches tomorrow… so here’s a Launch Trailer
Sony plans to launch The Frozen Wilds expansion for Horizon: Zero Dawn tomorrow, expanding Aloy’s world in a snowy new direction. To celebrate, the consolemaker has also released a stunning new Launch Trailer, and offered up a few tips on the PlayStation Blog for players looking to get the most out of the expansion:
1.) Load Your Latest Save
You don’t need to start a brand-new game just to access Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds. The expansion content is available regardless of whether you’re on your very first playthrough or on your latest New Game+.2.) Check Your Level
We tuned Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds for players with an experience level of 30 or higher. While it’s possible to access the expansion content if your level is below this threshold, you may find that Aloy’s lack of skills and/or equipment becomes too great a challenge. If that’s the case, try completing a few quests in the base game until you’ve sufficiently leveled up.3.) Complete the Quest “A Seeker at the Gates”
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds adds a whole new region known as The Cut, which becomes accessible after you’ve completed the quest A Seeker at the Gates. If you’re at level 30 you most likely already completed this quest, but if you’re not sure you can check its completion status in the Quests menu.4.) Find a Quest-Giver
To receive directions to the new region known as The Cut, speak with one of the three quest-givers added to the base game region. These quest-givers appear with a blue quest start marker over their head. They’re located in the following areas:
- Rhavid, a Carja nobleman with information and speculation about the Banuk borderlands, can be found outside Meridian.
- Ohtur, who knows how to get to The Cut, can be found inside the Carja border fort known as Daytower.
- Yariki, a Banuk woman with a dire warning about the dangers found in the borderlands, can be found north of the Grave Hoard.
5.) Survive the Frozen Wilds
Between the inhospitable environment and the dangerous new machines, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds offers a greater challenge than the base game — so make sure you bring the right skills, outfits, and weapons.
Players will be able to download Horizon: Zero Dawn – The Frozen Wilds from the PlayStation Store for $19.99 (or $14.99 if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber).
Horizon: Zero Dawn – The Frozen Wilds expansion will be released on November 7
Sony and Guerrilla Games have announced (via the PlayStation Blog) that The Frozen Wilds expansion for Horizon: Zero Dawn will be available to download on November 7.
Guerrilla plans to reveal more about The Frozen Wilds as we get closer to its launch date, but in the meantime, the developer confirmed that anyone who pre-orders the expansion from the PlayStation Store will receive an exclusive Avatar.
The 1-2 punch of Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 sit atop the best-selling games list for June 2017
Fighting game fans have proven, once again, that the genre is alive and well. According to the NPD Group’s recounting of the best-selling games in June, Tekken 7 (#1) and Injustice 2 (#2) took the top two spots. Nintendo’s bizarro take on the genre, Arms, also made a strong debut in the #5 spot.
Speaking of the Switch, Nintendo’s newest console continued to push the game industry to new heights in June, as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (#6) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (#7) stayed in the top ten.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella said: “The Nintendo Switch has been the catalyst for year-to-date growth. Year-to-date, hardware spending has grown 19% versus 2016 to $1.4 billion.”
However, older titles also performed well in June, including Grand Theft Auto V (#3), Overwatch (#9), and Minecraft (#17). 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III (#12) even managed to outsell 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (#15).
