New Releases: InFamous 2, Red Faction Armageddon, Green Lantern, More
This week’s E3 Expo will show the world everything about a ton of new games that’ll be available later this year and the next. But there are several games that’ll ship to stores this week and battle the big show for the gaming industry’s eyeballs.
The biggest new release is definitely Sony’s InFamous 2. The first game was a bit of a surprise hit, which has made the sequel one of 2011’s most anticipated games.
It’ll be joined by THQ’s latest trip to Mars, Red Faction: Armageddon (PC, PS3, Xbox 360); the movie-to-game adaptation Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters (3DS, DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360); and Codemasters’ latest FPS, Operation Flashpoint: Red River (PC, PS3, Xbox 360).

Infamous 2 beta extended due to PSN Outage
The Infamous 2 beta has been going on for a few weeks now, and players were enjoying creating new missions for its hero, Cole. All good things must come to an end though, and when the Playstation Network went dark, Sucker Punch, the developer of Infamous 2, was lit up with emails. Today, Sucker Punch has confirmed through their Twitter page the beta will be extended… when the PSN is back up:
We’ve decided to extend the beta. Once PSN is back up we’ll determine by how long, but rest assured: your outcry has been heard.
The Infamous 2 beta began on April 12 and Sucker Punch has also revealed that they’ve suspended beta code giveaways until Sony works out the PSN network issues:
Handing out beta codes you can’t redeem would be cruel and unusual; all contests and giveaways suspended until the PSN servers are back up.
InFamous 2 allows you to make your own missions, beta coming in April
Sucker Punch really doesn’t want you to stop playing InFamous 2. “No matter how many missions and mini-missions and systemic opportunities and branching story lines we add to the game, eventually the story ends,” said Development Director Chris Zimmerman (not Kris Zimmerman). To make sure the game never leaves your PS3, they announced today at GDC that InFamous 2 will provide the means for you to play, create, and share user-generated missions. The interface looks similar to the creation wheel in ModNation Racers as you can select props, enemies, and determine how the mission will play out. The trailer showcases defending and escort scenarios, and the developers tease that you’ll be able to create pure stealth objectives and even disc golf by substituting frisbees with cars.
A limited beta will begin in early April which you can sign up for starting March 14. Some of the best created levels during this time will even show up on the final version of the game. InFamous 2 launches on PlayStation 3 June 7, with an insane special edition.
Infamous 2 dated June 7, Hero Edition detailed
In a year with a new LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Resistance, and MotorStorm, it can be easy to forget about the sequel in Sony’s other new IP this generation, Infamous 2. Now’s the time to start remembering because it’s coming soon. The PlayStation Blog announced the June 7 release date for the game (almost two years exactly since the first one (and a day before my birthday, thank you very much)), and even got into the inevitable premium retail option – the Infamous 2 Hero Edition.
For a picture of Ben Franklin, this package gets you the game, a replica of Cole’s messenger bag, the first issue of the DC comic, an 8.5″ figureine of Cole, the game’s soundtrack, and a super voucher including a player skin of the first game’s antagonist Kesller (!), a 24K Amp to melee with, and powers for electrocution grenades and lightning hook. Ironically, all the items in the super voucher are being divided up among retailers as pre-order bonuses, so if you get the Hero Edition you might want to get it from a non-participating retailer for a few bucks cheaper, or just give your extra code to a friend.
It’s almost hard to believe it’s been two years since the release of Infamous. This might be a good time to head back to Empire City to get hyped for the new one.
