Complete contents of the Journey: Collector’s Edition revealed
Thatgamecompany has officially unveiled their first disc-based release, and while the title is Journey: Collector’s Edition, the Blu-ray disc will come bundled with both of the developer’s other games, Flow and Flower, previously only available as digital downloads via the PlayStation Network.
Not only that, but the disc is going to be stuffed, crammed and jammed with special bonus features, including three mini-games born out of a tradition at thatgamecompany known as the 24hr Game Jam, where games are created in the space of a day. Usually only playable in the company’s offices, players will be able to experience Gravediggers, Duke War!!, and Nostril Shot and see what 24 hours of creativity and hard graft looks like.
On top of this, there will be an array of additional bonus features including PSN avatars, soundtracks for all three games, developer diaries and making of documentaries. As if that wasn’t enough, players will also be able to experience optional live commentary during their playing experience, hearing from the talented individuals that were involved in the creative process.
“We are particularly excited about the Creator Commentary playthroughs of all three games, because we get to share with players insights about Flow, Flower, and Journey straight from the minds of the designers, artists, engineers and composers who worked together to make these games so special,” Studio Manager Sunni Pavlovic said.
Journey: Collector’s Edition looks to be an absolute steal at $29.99 when it’s released on August 28 in North America.

Developers From thatgamecompany Hold Court at GameFest
Thatgamecompany was on hand at this weekend’s GameFest at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. President Kellee Santiago, Core Engineer Martin Middleton, Lead Artist Matt Nava, Producer Robin Hunicke, and Community Manager Aaron Grommesh were at a table in the center of the courtyard on Saturday, March 17, signing books and posters and posing with fans. This friendly, down-to-earth group sat and talked with me and a friend of mine, Nikkolai Davenport, who works at indie developer Cipher Prime in Philadelphia, PA. But they did so much more than just sit and talk with us. What we got that day was a unique and memorable experience. (more…)
Us and the Game Industry showcases some of the unique thinkers in indy development
Us and the Game Industry follows three years of research and conversations with developers who were either starting or completing games in 2012. Director Stephanie Beth delves into the world of independent game making, and how developers are reinventing the medium of game design to create experiences far different from that of the ‘establishment’.
LA-based thatgamecompany is one of the development studios featured in the movie. Beth speaks with CEO and Creative Director Jenova Chen, as well as other members of the development team, throughout the three year production of Journey.
Also showcased is sole developer Jason Rohrer, creator of titles like Sleep is Death, and Inside a Star Filled Sky, and Daniel Cook, the Chief Creative Officer at Spry Fox.
Us and the Industry has a Kickstarter campaign going if you’d like to chip in a few bucks to help this movie reach theaters.

Journey, Warp, Shoot Many Robots, more added to PS Store
After a week of PlayStation Plus exclusivity, thatgamecompany’s Journey is now available to download from the PlayStation Store for all PS3 owners. And if our review is any indication, you should buy it right now. Leave work if you have to.
Also available this week are a pair of PSN shooters: EA’s warp (which was part of last month’s XBLA House Party) and Ubisoft’s Shoot Many Robots. I guess the question is, do you want to shoot humans who’ve cruelly kidnapped an alien or do you want to shoot alien invaders as the last hope for humanity?
If you’re interested in some gaming on the go, the Vita Store has added a pair of new games: Reality Fighters, an augmented reality fighting game (co-starring Mr. Miyagi!), and the latest entry in the Ridge Racer racing franchise. Excuse me… RIDGE RACCEEERRR!!!

Journey Review: A Trip You’ll Want to Take
Thatgamecompany’s latest creation, Journey, is more like a work of art than a video game. In fact, I’d go so far as to venture that this game is going to revive the whole “video games as art” argument all over again. Journey brings to life the story of a lone traveler, trekking across the desert to the source of a fallen star at the apex of a mountain. The trip is a spiritual one, something of a pilgrimage, and the symbiotic relationship the main character has with the fabric creatures creates a unique experience that is startlingly emotional for such a short game. Us mere mortals merely have to choose between the adorable RC cars of MotorStorm RC (PSN and Vita versions); Zipper’s Vita debut, Unit 13; the baseball sim, MLB 12: The Show; and a whole lot more.

Jenova Chen of thatgamecompany gives details on Journey
Jenova Chen recently sat down with Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog to discuss the latest game from him and the folks at thatgamecompany, Journey. The two go into details about the unorthodox gameplay, multiplayer, and antagonist in this much anticipated PSN-exclusive title. Some especially interesting parts of the interview include Chen’s thoughts on the lazy work that goes into multiplayer games today, and how Journey is trying to socially stimulate players’ brains.
Previous titles from thatgamecompany include flOw and Flower, two of the most beloved downloadable games this generation. Journey seems to be shaping up nicely to live up to the accomplishments previously set by the development team.
