Killzone: Ascendancy writer points towards Helghast POV for next story
Sam Bradbury recently novelized Killzone 3 and had a quick chat with the PlayStation Blog about the challenges and fun of adapting the Killzone universe to novel form. When asked what he would like to explore next if it were up to him, Bradbury replied:
I’ve seen people debating on the forums about who’s the worst: the Helghast or the ISA. So for that reason I think it would be great to do something from the perspective of the Helghast. We touched on it in Killzone: Ascendancy, but there’s a whole other world there to explore. Also I found the appearance of Visari’s daughter at the beginning very tantalizing…
Seen as the brand identifying icon for Killzone, and arguably the PlayStation 3, many have been calling for a Helghast-focused game for quite some time. Stay tuned for our Warp Zoned Wishlist to find out if it made the cut for what we’d like to see in Killzone 4.
Call of Duty: Black Ops leads February sales, becomes bestselling game of all-time
After becoming the bestselling PS3 game, Call of Duty: Black Ops can now lay claim to just being the bestselling game, period.
According to the NPD Group, the Treyarch-developed game passed Wii Play in February to become the bestselling game of all-time. Exact sales figures weren’t released, but Wii Play is known to have sold over 13 million copies. So let’s call it 14 million. Of course, Wii Play is a Wii exclusive while the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops have been split across the DS, PC, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
Not surprisingly, Black Ops was also the top-selling game in February, where it was joined by newcomers Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Killzone 3, Bulletstorm and Mario Sports Mix. The full top ten (which is still littered with dance games), can be seen right here:
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PC)
2. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds Xbox 360, PS3)
3. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
4. NBA 2K11 (Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Wii, PS2, PC)
5. Dead Space 2 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
6. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
7. Bulletstorm (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
8. Killzone 3 (PS3)
9. Michael Jackson: The Experience (Wii, DS, PSP)
10. Mario Sports Mix (Wii)

There’s ranting, there’s raving, and even some celebrating on the fifth episode of the Warp Zoned podcast.

SOCOM 4 multiplayer beta details emerge, new Bomb Squad mode announced
It’s the event you may have bought a copy of Killzone 3 just to get in on: the SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals beta has been officially detailed. A new phase will begin every week starting March 15th, when a small private group of individuals contacted by Zipper or Sony will be invited. Next week, PlayStation Plus subscribers will get their chance at the tactical gameplay, followed by owners of beta codes given out with new copies of Killzone 3. On April 5, the beta will be open to all PlayStation Network users. All four phases will be cumulative, so if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you can play in the other phases up until the servers are taken down on April 13.
Players will be able to check out two maps (Port Authority and Assault & Battery) while playing in all four game modes: Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink, and the newly announced Bomb Squad. In Bomb Squad, the Spec Ops team escorts a heavily armored, yet indispensable technician from bomb site to bomb site as he attempts to defuse explosives before the Insurgent team can stop him.
This does seem a little cheap – Killzone 3 purchasers getting in on the second to last phase when that was such a big part of the advertising for the game. Not to mention if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber who could’ve gotten into it anyway without a purchase. Chris Roper from Zipper explains the phasing is so they can gradually introduce a greater amount of players in each phase as a lot of people bought Killzone 3. I’m inclined to believe him, and hope the beta works out for the team when SOCOM 4 is released on April 19 for the PlayStation 3.
Killzone 3 Review: Next Generation Gaming
Almost two years to the day after their last game set the PlayStation 3 on fire, Guerilla Games returns to the universe of their sci-fi franchise with Killzone 3. Despite its gritty realism, brutal encounters, and unparalleled production values, Killzone 2 suffered a lot of criticism from mainstream shooter fans who called for more conventional gameplay and were tired of the grey and monochromatic settings. The production values are still unmatched, but Guerilla went above and beyond accommodating the concerns of the wider console demographic, for better or for worse. While the final product departs significantly from its predecessor, Killzone 3 still manages to honor its spirit by once again raising the bar for first person shooters and pushing the boundaries of the imagination. Killzone.com launches career progression videos for Killzone 3’s classes
The PlayStation Network is set to be engulfed in the flames of war (or should I say Warzone) as Killzone 3 prepares for its North American launch tomorrow. To get players comfortable with the very deep class system of the game’s multiplayer, Killzone.com’s blog is hosting a series of videos on each class. The first one is the engineer, master of turret bots and the keyholder to emplaced weapons and ammo stockpiles. Guerilla’s Multiplayer Designer Dan Nanni explains the supportive nature of the engineer, detailing each of the class’ weapons and game-changing abilities. The rest of the classes should be up in the coming days so stay tuned for some intel that’s sure to come in handy out there.
New Releases: Killzone 3, Bulletstorm, De Blob 2, More
Two pairs of heavyweights in their respective genres go head-to-head in this week’s new releases.
First up, we have the launch two major first person shooters… Sony’s continued fight against the Helghast in Killzone 3 (PS3) versus Epic Games’ latest fragfest, Bulletstorm (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). Don’t forget, the Xbox 360 version of Bulletstorm comes in an “Epic Edition” that inlcudes a few in-game goodies and access to the Gears of War 3 beta.
The next fight is a little less high profile (and both games come from the same publisher), but in a battle between handheld RPGs… Atlus is bringing Radiant Historia to the DS and also bringing Ys I & II Chronicles to the PSP.
Standing alone is THQ’s De Blob 2 (DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), which would probably be a unique title at any time of the year.
The full list of the rest of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)
Go Back to the Future with 2/15/11 PlayStation Store update
This week should be pretty special for many different types of gamers on the PSN, especially fans of Telltale Games. Most notable on the PlayStation Store update this week is Back to the Future: The Game, featuring Christopher Lloyd himself as Doc and the best Michael J. Fox impersonation ever. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this game so you couldn’t go wrong with a $19.99 subscription. Also from the folks behind Monkey Island comes four new Sam & Max episodes exclusive to the PSN, for $8.99 a piece.
Acceleration of SUGURI X-Edition and ATV Pure round out the new games list with insane robot combat and quad racing, respectively.
There’s also a few notable entries outside of new games. The demo for the much-anticipated Yakuza 4 is available for PlayStation Plus subscribers, and the Killzone 3 single player demo is available in 3D and normal for all PSN gamers. Definitely check that one out if you haven’t already.
Most importantly for me, as you may tell from our podcasts, is Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. You read that right, Square Enix has released a PSP game on the PSN. No one expected this to land digitally, but Senior Editor Nicole Kline speculated that because the NGP will for the most part use digital media, Square may finally have to get their act together. In any case, be sure to take a look at this masterpiece, as well as more information on the new games on the Store after the break (details on all of this week’s add-ons can be found at the PlayStation.Blog).
