Square Enix is telling investors that Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake might not be released until 2018

Back in March, Square Enix held a “Roadshow” presentation for their UK investors, and the slides from that presentation are now available online. While they paint a rosy financial picture for the company, the slides also hint at further delays to a pair of upcoming RPGs.

In a section highlighting recent and upcoming releases, Square Enix listed six games under the heading, “Fiscal Year 2018 and Beyond” (Square Enix’s fiscal year runs from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018). Three of the games… Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, and Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy… received an additional notation that they’re scheduled to launch in Japan in 2017.

Unfortunately, that left the other three games… Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the Avengers Project partnership with Marvel… to fill out the “Beyond” half of the section.

While this news is disappointing, it shouldn’t be too surprising. The publisher has never announced an official release date for Kingdom Hears III, and in January, Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura said both games “still [had] a ways to go.” The developer also strongly implied that a showcase at an industry event was the most that either game would receive in 2017.

Still, there’s 11 months remaining in Square Enix’s current fiscal year. You never know, they could have a few surprises in store for their fans.

Tetsuya Nomura says we’ll have to wait “a little longer” for release of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III

Like Valve and Blizzard, Square Enix is well-known for taking their sweet time with projects they have in development. Not surprisingly, the publisher is using the same deliberate pace to produce Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake, which have been in the works since 2013 and 2015, respectively.

Director Tetsuya Nomura recently offered an update on both titles to Famitsu (translated by Siliconera), and while progress is being made, it might be quite a while before either is released:

Famitsu: What’s the development status on Kingdom Hearts III?

Nomura: The production process is different than what we’ve had up until now, so I can’t just give you a general idea, but I can say that there are worlds that still remain untouched. We’ve advanced on the production of worlds that have yet to be announced, so we can’t show them for now. As far as development status goes, there’s still a ways to go.

Famitsu: What’s the development status on Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Nomura: We’re making steady progress on its production. While we are indeed working on it, I think we’ll have you guys wait a little longer for both Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Nomura apologized for the delays, but assured fans that it takes time to create “something that will meet expectations.” Hopefully, we’ll get the chance to see how both games are progressing later this year, as the Director also said he’s looking forward to showcasing both games at at least one event in 2017.

It sounds unlikely that Kingdom Hearts III or Final Fantasy VII Remake will launch in 2017, especially after Nomura said, “[Square Enix has] many titles releasing this year,” implying that neither game will be available by the end of the year. Though he did say that fans should look forward to some “surprises.”

Tetsuya Nomura says that development on Kingdom Hearts III’s “basic systems” is done

kingdomheartsiii-header

Kingdom Hearts III was officially announced more than two years ago and it doesn’t feel like it’s any closer to release now than it was then. However, Director Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down with Games Radar and revealed that the “basic systems” of the game are complete:

“For the most part we’ve established the ground foundations, like the basic systems and mechanics of what’s going to go in the game. Development of that is pretty much close to complete.

But don’t rush out to your favorite game store just yet, Nomura also said that creating the fine details of the game (environments, minigames, and other smaller items) will still take a considerable amount of time:

“But of course, since this is an HD title, it’s now building the resources, and development of the ‘mass’ elements of it, like mass production of the areas and the actual things that are going into the game. Other elements, including the mini-games and other various smaller items; their progress is very varied… some of them are polished and very close to final state, but at the same time some elements are still in the planning phases and I haven’t laid out the groundwork yet. But the basic structure of what’s going to go in the game is set, it’s now a matter of mass production of the different elements.”

Kingdom Hearts III is in development for the PS4 and Xbox One… and it’ll likely be a very long time before we get to play it.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will take us into the world of Tangled

Sora’s adventures through the Magic Kingdom (and beyond) are about to get a little hairy. Today, Square Enix released a new gameplay video for the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts III. The video shows multiple battle scenes with Sora and his companions Donald and Goofy, and also features a familiar-looking tower in the background. Eagle-eyed Disney fans may immediately recognize it as being from Tangled, Disney’s retelling of the Rapunzel story.

A release date has yet to be officially announced for the PS4 and Xbox One game, so stay tuned for more information. Until then, enjoy the E3 2015 trailer.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix will be released on December 2

Square Enix has released the E3 2014 trailer and announced a release date for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix. Players will be able to get their hands on the compilation beginning December 2. The compilation, which will be available exclusively for the PS3, will include high definition remakes of Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. Non-playable cinematic scenes from Kingdom Hearts: Re:Coded will also be included to complete the story.

And don’t think Square Enix forgot about Kingdom Hearts III. While the PS4 and Xbox One title won’t be on display during next week’s E3 Expo, a small preview of the game is included at the end of the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 trailer above.

Ride the Pirate Ship and Magic Mountain in new Kingdom Hearts III trailer

Disney held their first D23 Japan Expo over the weekend and they used the opportunity to debut some new gameplay footage from Kingdom Hearts III. The PS4 and Xbox One RPG is still a long ways away, but you can watch as Sora does battle with the Heartless using the Keyblade and the Key Blaster while Donald and Goofy tag along. Later, the trio jaunts over to Disneyland/Disney World and rides the Pirate Ship and Big Magic Mountain.

It’s a magical place.

Square Enix wants to add Star Wars-themed world to Kingdom Hearts III

kingdomheartsiii-header

Tetsuya Nomura has the world’s biggest toychest at his disposal. As the Director of the Kingdom Hearts series, Nomura is able to mix and match Disney’s biggest properties in the most expansive crossover ever. But I have a good feeling about his plans for Kingdom Hearts III

Nomura wants to add Star Wars characters to the mix.

Speaking to Finaland, Nomura confirmed that he wants to include a galaxy far, far away in the next Kingdom Hearts game, but that the decision ultimately lies with Disney:

“[W]e’ve been talking about Star Wars itself since it became Disney’s content recently. When I [heard] the news I was like ‘Wow ! Wow !’ Yeah obviously it’s gonna be great if we could add it, but like I said there are a lot of restrictions and rules by Disney so we don’t know what’s gonna happen but yeah, we’ll see.”

I hope Disney goes for it. Who doesn’t want to see a Keyblade/Lightsaber battle between Sora and Darth Vader?

Square Enix: Kingdom Hearts III is very early in development

kingdomheartsiii-header

It may be a very long time before we get a chance to purchase Kingdom Hearts III. Speaking to Famitsu, Director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the game is still very early in development and was only announced to keep fans from wondering if the game would ever come out.

“There have been a lot of spin-off games since Kingdom Hearts II and a lot of fans were probably getting anxious, so we made the announcement together with Final Fantasy XV.” Nomura stated, adding, “Considering where we are in development, it may have been a little early.”

Nomura also found the time to speak to Dengeki and discuss the game’s plot. According to the Director, Kingdom Hearts III will complete the “Dark Seeker Saga” last seen in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

While it’ll be a long time before Kingdom Hearts III is released, Nomura also said that more details about the game would be revealed at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
