New Releases: Madden NFL 15, Metro Redux, Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, More
The month of August is coming to a close and its taking the Summer gaming drought with it.
As they do every year, EA Sports wants to ask: “Are you ready for some football?” If you are, then you’re probably already aware that Madden NFL 15 will be available this week. Just like last year, the game will be released for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. And if you haven’t made your next-generation console choice yet, there’s going to be a Madden NFL 15 Xbox One Bundle available as well.
A different kind of battle will take place on the 3DS this week with the release of Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney. These two titans of the handheld puzzle game genre will go head-to-head to prove once and for all that… actually, nevermind. Neither character challenges the other and, in fact, they team up in Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney to solve a crime. So I’m not sure where the “vs” in the title comes from.
Finally this week, a trio of games will receive spiffy re-releases on a new platform. NIS America resurrects the first game in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series on the Vita as Hyperdimension Neptunia ReBirth 1. And Deep Silver is bringing back Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light in a next-generation package known as Metro Redux on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Three new Xbox One bundles announced
Microsoft is already gearing up for the upcoming holiday season, unveiling a whopping three Xbox One console bundles. Each bundle is sure to scratch the many itches of gamers, whether you’re a sports fan, a FPS freak, or a zombie fanatic.
The Xbox One Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare bundle releases on November 3rd, and includes a digital copy of the “Day Zero” version of COD, which gives you early access to the game as well as double XP on November 3rd. The bundle also includes a 1TB hard drive, chat headset, in-game content, and a really sweet-looking console and controller. Retail price is $499.
The Xbox One Sunset Overdrive bundle includes the oh-so-sexy white console (and a controller to match), a standard size 500GB hard drive, a chat headset, a digital copy of Sunset Overdrive, and all the bonus content included with the “Day One” edition of the game. This bundle will release alongside Insomnaic’s wild-looking game on October 28, and will be priced at $399.
Finally, the Xbox One FIFA 15 bundle includes a digital copy of the game, a chat headset, 14-day Xbox Live trial, and the Ultimate Team Legends Gold Pack. This bundle is set to release on September 25, but will only be available in Europe (for €399.99).
Don’t worry American sports fans – you can still get your Madden NFL 15 bundle on August 26th. And interestingly enough, it appears that none of these bundles will include a Kinect sensor. Hmm…
EA Access offers subscription service for EA games on Xbox One
You’re already signed up for Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus. Now, get ready to open up your wallet for EA Access.
EA Access is a subscription service that will offer access to some of Electronic Art’s previously released titles as digital downloads. Currently, the service is exclusive to the Xbox One and will be available for $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.
So what do you get for your money? First and foremost, you get access to “The Vault,” a revolving selection of EA titles that can be downloaded from Xbox Live. During this Summer’s EA Access beta period, The Vault will contain Battlefield 4, FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, and Peggle 2. According to the fine print, EA Access subscribers will lose all access to their EA Access games if the subscription lapses and once a game is removed from The Vault, it is no longer playable by EA Access subscribers.
In addition to titles in The Vault, EA Access members will be able to download demo versions of upcoming EA titles five days before the general public. These “Play First” titles include Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, FIFA 15, NBA Live 15, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Finally, subscribers will receive 10% off all EA digital content in the Xbox Live Games Store. That includes all full game downloads and add-on content.
If you’re interested in signing up for EA Access, head over to EA.com/eaaccess now.
Madden NFL 15 adds “The Gauntlet” in this new gameplay trailer
As the first real version of Madden released in the next-generation era, EA Sports is putting a lot of extra effort into Madden NFL 15. One of those new features is “The Gauntlet,” an extra mode that drops players into a drills and skills competition with passing, catching, running, and defensive-themed events. Players will be able to challenge the high scores set by their friends as well as tackle “boss challenges” on their way through The Gauntlet.
Madden NFL 15 will be out on August 26 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
Stop (In the Name of Love) for Richard Sherman’s Madden NFL 15 cover
Box art reveals are usually pretty boring. Take a nice piece of concept art… emblazon the logo along the top… slap an ESRB rating in the bottom left corner… and you’re done. They only become newsworthy when a publisher does something stupendously weird (such as the word salad on Batman: Arkham City‘s “Game of the Year” cover) or ridiculously neat (such as the minimalist Resistance 3 cover).
The official Madden NFL 15 cover falls in the former category.
I don’t know if cover athlete Richard Sherman is auditioning to become a traffic cop or if he really loves “Stop In the Name of Love,” but it’s definitely an odd choice for the Madden box. It’s possible he’s doing something football-related like reaching out for a high five or stiff-arming a wide receiver, but the whole thing just looks off somehow. A part of me thinks that whichever EA Sports employee it was that made the final cover choice has to be a fan of the Denver Broncos.
Madden NFL 15 will be available for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on August 26.
Your Madden NFL 15 cover athlete is… Richard Sherman
Maybe it was just me, but it feels like EA Sports and ESPN didn’t care about the Madden NFL 15 Cover Vote at all. After exhausting themselves counting 40 million votes last year in a massive 64-man tournament, this year’s tournament featured a simple 16-man competition. The public agreed with EA’s assessment and only cast nine million votes, less than 25% of last year’s total, over the course of this year’s contest. But now that all the votes have been tallied, EA Sports is ready to announce that the Madden NFL 15 cover athlete is… Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks.
Sherman becomes only the third defensive player to grace the cover of a Madden NFL game and only the second to do so solo after Madden NFL 2005‘s endorsement of Ray Lewis. For the curious, Troy Polamalu is the third player as he shared the cover of Madden NFL 10 with Larry Fitzgerald. And you can’t talk about the Madden cover without also talking about the Madden Curse. And Sherman, as is his way, is talking. The cornerback told ESPN: “I don’t believe in curses. I believe in God.”
However, EA Sports would prefer that we didn’t think about the Curse and instead focused on the first gameplay trailer of Madden NFL 15, which can be found after the break. (more…)
Cam Newton and Richard Sherman battle for Madden NFL 15 cover in final round of vote
It all comes down to the cornerback and the quarterback.
EA’s Madden NFL 15 Cover Vote has reached the final round and, from now until June 6, voters will have a chance to visit ESPN.com/maddenvote to cast their final ballot. In the end, both #1 seeds, Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks and Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers, reached the final vote.
The winner will be announced on Friday, June 6 during the 6:00 PM (Eastern Time) edition of SportsCenter.
Newton, Sherman show why they’re #1 seeds in first round of Madden NFL 15 Cover Vote
Voting is complete for the first round of the Madden NFL 15 Cover Vote. Some were close and some most certainly were not, but the higher seed came away with a victory in almost every matchup. The lone upset was Luke Kuechly’s victory over Denver’s Demaryius Thomas. His win earns him the right to go up against Colin Kaepernick, the #2 seed of the left bracket.
Cam Newton and Richard Sherman, the tournaments #1 seeds, showed why EA Sports thinks so highly of them. Sherman won his matchup against Alshon Jeffery with 73% of the vote while Newton clobbered Pittsburgh’s Antonio Brown 80%-20%. Here’s what the remaining matchups look like heading into Round 2:
Left Bracket
(1) Richard Sherman (CB, Seattle Seahawks)
(4) Jimmy Graham (TE, New Orleans Saints)
(2) Colin Kaepernick (QB, San Francisco 49ers)
(6) Luke Kuechly (LB, Carolina Panthers)
Right Side
(1) Cam Newton (QB, Carolina Panthers)
(4) Jamaal Charles (RB, Kansas City Chiefs)
(2) Andrew Luck (QB, Indianapolis Colts)
(3) LeSean McCoy (RB, Philadelphia Eagles)
Second round voting will remain open until next Thursday, May 22.
