With no new releases, Modern Warfare 3 leads the January 2012 NPD report
With their January 31 release date, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soul Calibur V missed the cutoff date for the monthly NPD report, so Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 emerges victorious once again.
Infinity Ward’s latest shooter was followed by string of titles that have been racking up big sales all Winter including Just Dance 3 (#2), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (#3), NBA 2K12 (#4), and Battlefield 3 (#5). And a #8 finish for Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure capped off a strong 2011 for the toy/video game hybrid, including 22% of all accessory sales.
With no major new releases last month, game and hardware sales for January 2012 dropped 38% from the year before when Dead Space 2, which explains the large number of holdovers from 2011.
You can find the complete top ten for January 2012 after the break. (more…)
See Mario Kart 7 designs on next episode of West Coast Customs
Vehicle modification show “West Coast Customs” has taken on an interesting challenge: to bring some of the karts in Mario Kart 7 to life.
Ryan Friedlinghaus, founder and CEO of West Coast Customs, said “When Don James, Executive Vice President of Nintendo America, requested the meeting and he told me he needed us to create some of the Mario Kart 7 cars in real life, I was excited and ready for the challenge. Then he said they need to have a hang glider for flying and a propeller for underwater maneuvering, I thought, he must be joking!”
Tune in to Velocity this Sunday, January 22, at 9 PM; watch and see if they are able to successfully create replicas – to scale! – of the Mario Kart and the Bumble V kart.
Shocker: Modern Warfare 3 leads December NPD list
The NPD Group has released their list of the bestselling games in December and, once again, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 tops the list. The shooter was joined in the top ten by its comrade in arms, Battlefield 3, which gunned down the number five slot.

Mario Kart 7 Review: More Tracks, More Fun, More Blue Shells
With the initial announcement of Nintendo’s 3DS, there was a flurry of obvious guesses as to what franchises would be brought to the new, revolutionary console. Chief among those was the Mario Kart series, which has leapt from one platform to the next with popularity and success. When the trailers first started pouring out for the latest game, titled only Mario Kart 7, fans were not disappointed. Having spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel, I can say that – while blandly titled – Mario Kart 7 lives up to all the hype built around it. (more…)
3DS sells 4 million in 2011; New Mario Party, Pokemon announced
It’s no secret that the 3DS is not selling as well as Nintendo would like…
Sorry, wrong article. That was actually the opening sentence to our news report on the 3DS’s August price drop. Needless to say, it doesn’t quite apply on the third day of 2012, as Nintendo has announced that they sold four million 3DS handhelds in the US in 2011.
Besides the sales turnaround of their newest portable system, Nintendo had a very good year last year. Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land became the first games to sell a million copies on the 3DS while The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword also pushed a million on the Wii.
To ensure that the 3DS continues printing money, Nintendo wasted no time in announcing that two of their biggest franchises, Mario Party and Pokemon, will make the jump to the handheld in the near future.
The word “duh” comes to mind. As does the word “cha-ching.”
New Releases: Mario Kart 7, Assassin’s Creed Revelations for PC, NatGeo Challenge
With December upon us, the Fall gaming rush has come to a close as only a handful of titles are left to be released in 2011. But one of those games is also one of the biggest games of the year, Mario Kart 7. The first “numbered” Mario Kart sequel also adds a number of other new features to the series including karts with hang gliders, underwater tracks, and first-person tilt controls.
Also available in stores this week is the PC version of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and the PS3/Wii/Xbox 360 trivia contest National Geographic Challenge!
New Mario Kart 7 trailer is comfort food for Thanksgiving Eve
The latest Mario Kart 7 trailer looks like every other trailer released for the game so far. But you know what? That doesn’t bother me. The racers may be familiar, but there are also new ones like Shy Guy and Metal Mario). The tracks may be familiar, but 16 new tracks will also be available. And the items may be familiar, but you’ll also be able to bash opponents with Donkey Kong’s Hammer.
Isn’t that comforting familiarity (and awesome newness) exactly what you want out of Mario Kart? Mario Kart 7 will be released exclusively for the 3DS on December 4.
Hulu Plus coming to 3DS, Wii; more features announced for 3DS
Nintendo has made a big, if unsurprising, announcement: Hulu Plus is coming to the 3DS and the Wii. Hulu Plus – which costs $7.99 a month – is host to dozens of current and popular seasons of television shows from all the major channels.
In addition, Nintendo also announced some major additions to the 3DS. 3DS owners will now be able to record up to 10 minutes of 3D videos, opening up venues for all manner of creative endeavors – including 3D stop-motion animation videos. There are also new musical artists coming to Nintendo Video, including Foster the People’s “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls),” as well as a new animated 3D video from Dreamworks called “Thriller” which features characters from Shrek. New puzzles will also be available in the Mii Plaza, and a new dungeon added to Find Mii.
Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America, said, “Nintendo 3DS continues to evolve with great new features and functions designed to reinforce its position as a premiere entertainment device. All of these features, in addition to great upcoming games like Pokémon Rumble Blast on October 24, Super Mario 3D Land on November 13 and Mario Kart 7 on December 4, make Nintendo 3DS a smart gift option this holiday season.”
Still want more? Nintendo also announced four new games – Freakyforms, Pushmo, Swapnote, and Dillon’s Rolling Western. The system update to the 3DS will be happening at the end of November, and Hulu Plus will be coming “soon.” Hit the jump for a complete description of the four new games. (more…)
