All Articles: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
The Phantom Pain officially announced as Metal Gear Solid 5
Well, that was anti-climactic.
Hideo Kojima is on stage for his presentation, “Photorealism Through the Eyes of a Fox: The Core of Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes,” at this year’s Game Developers Conference. In a shock to absolutely no one (OK, my 93-year old grandma was probably surprised), the developer opened with the news that “The Phantom Pain” is indeed the fifth Metal Gear Solid game.
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was first announced at the 2012 Spike TV Video Game Awards, credited to Moby Dick Studio. The Metal Gear touches in the trailer were pretty obvious and Kojima Productions was able to keep the Metal Gear Solid 5/Phantom Pain connection a secret for about an hour before the Internet cracked their code.
What this means for the now fictional Moby Dick Studio and their bandaged CEO, Joakim Mogren, remains to be seen.

Just Stop! Hey Kojima, WE KNOW You’re Behind The Phantom Pain
When the Internet decides to collectively believe something that’s just not true, we have to cry out… Just Stop! This is what’s making a Warp Zoned editor rip his computer from the wall in frustration today…
It’s not the Internet-at-large that’s bugging me today, but instead it’s one man: Hideo Kojima. Actually, it’s two men, as Joakim Mogren, the CEO of Swedish game developer Moby Dick Studio, is most definitely not Hideo Kojima. But who is he, really? Some say it’s Cliff Bleszinski in disguise. Is the man formerly known as CliffyB really behind Moby Dick’s first game, The Phantom Pain? Or is it just some actor keeping the world in suspense until Kojima reveals his connection to the game at this year’s Game Developers Conference? Whoever’s behind The Phantom Pain, they think they’re being clever.
No! Just Stop! YOU. ARE. WRONG. (more…)
Moby Dick CEO says “all your Phantom Pain questions will be answered” at GDC
Moby Dick Studio’s CEO, Joakim Mogren, emerged from his Swedish exile last night to sit down for an interview with Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers TV. Mogren offered to meet Keighley at a “secret hotel room,” with his face bandaged, to discuss Moby Dick’s first game, The Phantom Pain.
The interview is the opening segment of the episode and it does little to dissuade the Internet detectives who believe The Phantom Pain is just a front for Metal Gear Solid 5. Mogren revealed that he’ll be attending this year’s Game Developers Conference (Hideo Kojima will also be there, by the way) with a brand new Phantom Pain trailer, which he promised “will answer all of your questions.” He then pulled out an iPad to show Keighley a few new screenshots of the game and… dun dun dun… the final two screenshots were tagged with the Fox Engine logo.
Hmm, I guess Kojima’s comments that he only “inspired” The Phantom Pain’s trailer weren’t entirely accurate, now were they?
The Phantom Pain developer will be on GameTrailers TV tonight
Remember The Phantom Pain? The vaguely Metal Gear Solid-like game made its debut at last year’s Spike TV Video Game Awards and left most gamers awaiting the day that Hideo Kojima would confirm it was connected to the further adventures of Solid Snake. That day still hasn’t come and a recent appearance by Moby Dick Studio’s Joakim Mogren may have put a damper on the whole Kojima connection.
Mogren will appear on tonight’s GameTrailers TV in an interview with host Geoff Keighley. Keighley revealed (via Twitter) that Mogren sat down for their interview in disguise:
This man claims to be Joakim Mogren of Moby Dick Studios, developer of The Phantom Pain. instagr.am/p/W2VnqPIsHR/
— Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) March 14, 2013
He also confirmed (again via Twitter) that the man who claims to be Mogren definitely wasn’t Hideo Kojima. He even showed Keighley a few never-before-seen images from The Phantom Pain.
GameTrailers TV airs tonight at 1 AM (Eastern Time) on Spike TV.
Spike TV VGAs: The Phantom Pain trailer asks a lot of questions
Moby Dick Studio’s The Phantom Pain definitely had a strange world premiere at this year’s Spike TV Video Game Awards. A soldier wakes up from a coma in a hospital, and he’s got a hook hand and is in pretty bad shape. But suddenly, the hospital is attacked, and soldiers in full uniform start killing off the patients in the hospital as the building burns around them. Questions flicker across the screen – “Why am I here?” and “Have I gone to hell” and “Why do they want me?”
Suddenly, one important message flickers: “Open your eyes.” A man on fire appears to change into a beast, and a great beast overtakes a helicopter. There was definitely a lot of strange stuff going on, and I’m still not sure what the game was about (though rumors are swirling that it’s somehow related to Metal Gear Solid 5). Whatever it is, it looks badass.
Check out this 11-minute Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes trailer
Hideo Kojima has invaded PAX Prime 2012 to give us a closer look at his newly announced Metal Gear title, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The nearly 11-minute trailer above is very impressive and we now know that the game won’t star Solid Snake. Instead, the game will continue the adventures of Big Boss in the 1970s as Ground Zeroes is being positioned as a direct sequel to Peace Walker. Not only that but, according to Kojima himself, the game will serve as a prequel to Metal Gear Solid 5.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but no release date has been announced.
Kojima confirms Solid Snake will return in Metal Gear Solid 5
Even though he’s hard at work on the non-Metal Gear-related Project Ogre, Hideo Kojima just can’t stop himself from talking about Metal Gear Solid 5. Speaking to IG, a French gaming magazine, he said:
About Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things. There will be much question of infiltration, espionage, and convincing people to give you “a favor” like in the last Metal Gear Solid.
The Metal Gear games have always been known for their stealth gameplay. So for Kojima to say that the next proper entry in the series will also include those elements isn’t exactly a shock.
Much more interesting were Kojima’s further comments on the matter including, “There will be a Metal Gear Solid 5 with the new Fox Engine,” and this news concerning Solid Snake’s further future with the franchise:
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance never claimed to be a Metal Gear Solid. This is not a game about our beloved Solid Snake. It is a spinoff that tries something different. We have not yet finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots.
It’s important to remember that Konami has yet to officially announce Metal Gear Solid 5, so it’ll likely be a long time before we get to play it.

Kojima working on the “shining moment” for the Metal Gear franchise
Hideo Kojima held court at the Smithsonian American Art Museum yesterday as part of the kickoff festivities for their new exhibit, “The Art of Video Games.”
During the hour-long panel discussion, appropriately titled “A Conversation With Hideo Kojima,” the famed developer was asked about his life, his career, and his plans for the future. Naturally, he was also asked about his thoughts on the Metal Gear franchise, including what he thought the “shining moment of accomplishment” from the series was. His answer surprised many in the audience.
Kojima said that he couldn’t say too much, but “this year or next year, I am working on something that I think will become the shining moment” for his career and the Metal Gear series. He also said that he’ll be 50 next year and that he wants to create that moment now.
Kojima has always maintained that his next project is Project Ogre, an open-world game where players hunt demons. But it appears the developer (and his team at Kojima Productions) is hard at work on a supersecret Metal Gear game, perhaps even Metal Gear Solid 5. Awesome!
The Smithsonian recorded “A Conversation With Hideo Kojima” and a video is available after the break. (more…)
