“Amazing new features” planned for next Minecraft XBLA update; Skin Pack 1 announced
Microsoft and developer 4J Studios are moving forward with the next major Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition update. There’s still word on when the 1.7.3 update will be released, but the company’s PlayXBLA blog has promised it’ll contain some “amazing new features.” The PC version’s 1.7.3 update included more clay, shears for shearing sheep, and pistons. Who knows what XBLA-specific surprises Microsoft might have up their sleeves?
Speaking of surprises, Microsoft also announced that Skin Pack 1 (yes, they’re already planning multiple Skin Packs) will be released alongside the 1.7.3 update. Players who purchase Skin Pack 1 will gain access to 40 fancy new skins and none of them will be variations of “Steve!” Instead, Skin Pack 1 will include original skins such as a Creeper Man, ‘Splosion Man, Trials Man, Covenant Grunt, and the King.
The 1.7.3 update will be free to download, but the price of Skin Pack 1 has yet to be determined.
First Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition patch will be available tomorrow
Remember that list of bug fixes and new features for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition we posted on Monday? It turns out that that update, which was said to be coming “soon,” will actually be available tomorrow. I think Minecraft fans the world over just started doing a happy dance. Perhaps a little jig.
Before you put your dancing shoes away, you can dance past the jump for the complete list of fixes and new features. (more…)
New features, bug fixes coming soon to Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was always designed as an ongoing project. And it looks like Mojang and port developer 4J Studios are getting ready to deploy the first major update to the game soon. Microsoft didn’t say when soon would be, but they did announce what features (Autosave!) and bug fixes (Clay!) we can look forward to.
You can find the complete list after the break. (more…)
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Review: The Journal of a Minecraft Adventurer
Minecraft is a phenomenon that had passed me by. Mojang’s sandbox world sounded interesting, but I was never sure what to make of it. However, when Microsoft announced plans to bring Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition to the Xbox Live Arcade, I decided to finally give it a shot. But it wasn’t I who wrote the following review. It’s actually a journal that belongs to an unnamed adventurer who just so happens to look just like me. (more…)
Microsoft to give refunds to gamers who can’t play Minecraft multiplayer
It’s often that we hear about a huge corporation messing it up for the little consumers like us, but in light of the recent Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition splitscreen debacle, it seems that the big, bad Microsoft is playing nice.
For those of you who don’t know, the splitscreen feature for Minecraft is only available if you have an HDTV. If you have a standard def set, you’re out of luck. The problem was that on XBLA, these requirements were never stated and many of the customers thought they were getting the whole game when, sadly, they weren’t able to enjoy one the best features of playing Minecraft on the Xbox 360. Thankfully, the requirements for splitscreen play have finally been added to the game’s Xbox.com listing and wronged customers are being sorted out in a well-oiled manner.
If you’re one of these disgruntled customers with a standard def set, you can contact Microsoft customer service and receive a refund if you purchased the game before the newly stated requirements went up over the weekend.
It could have been much worse. Microsoft could have told customers to build their own HDTV in Minecraft so that they could play split screen Minecraft in Minecraft. Then together you could each make your own HDTV’s to play Minecraft within Minecraft within Minecraft. Then even Christopher Nolan would be confused.

Minecraft delivers a pickaxe blow to every XBLA sales record
Does it honestly surprise anyone anymore that Minecraft has done something amazing and awesome? In addition to being a refreshingly unique and enjoyable game that puts the player’s imagination front and center in their own cubically arranged world, it’s also become the fastest-selling game ever offered on the Xbox Live Arcade, both in terms of copies sold and money made.
That’s right, this little indie game has blitzed every XBLA sales record effortlessly to sit high on it’s laurels and reap the rewards. Which are more piles of cash for Markus “Notch” Persson to hurl at Tim Schafer and hopefully any other auteur to help get their arrestingly unique ideas out of their heads and onto consoles and PCs everywhere. Official figures weren’t released, but the Minecraft creator tweeted that more 400,000 had listed their names on the game’s leaderboard on Wednesday.
The previous holder of the 24-hour sales record was Trials Evolution, which was only able to call itself “the fastest-selling XBLA game ever” for three weeks.
Win Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (and more cool stuff) with Raptr Rewards
Raptr, the online network that tracks what you (and your friends) play, recently launched the beta version of their Raptr Rewards program.
Now, playing games and unlocking Achievements/Trophies in your favorite will also unlock prizes and discounts through the Rewards program. Previously, Raptr gave away Diablo III and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta codes, as well as discounts on Logitech gear and add-on packs for the free-to-play games Pandora Saga and Blacklight: Rertibution. But the Raptr Rewards program will have its big coming out party tomorrow, May 10, when the company plans to give away 2,500 copies of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition.
The requirements to unlock the reward haven’t been revealed yet, but Raptr representatives believe the offer is “going to go quickly,” so I’d sign up for Raptr Rewards today (unless you already have). And if Minecraft isn’t your thing, Raptr has also revealed that they’ll be giving away 350,000 other prizes throughout the month of May.
