Sony @ E3 14: Mortal Kombat X gameplay trailer revealed
While the CG trailer for Mortal Kombat X was entertaining, fans were immediately clamoring for some footage of the game in motion. And during their E3 Press Conference, Sony delivered. We were treated to Scorpion and Sub-Zero battling it out along with two new characters, a demonic woman in a cloak and a giant carrying a little dude on his shoulders (Master Blaster?).
So here’s Mortal Kombat X, in all its bloody glory:
Continue Countdown #5 – Mortal Kombat X, Forza Horizon 2, Pre-E3 Predictions, More
It’s the most wonderful time of the year as the 2014 E3 Expo is right around the corner. The Warp Zoned staff spent a recent night chatting about some of the big pre-E3 announcements during the latest episode of “Continue Countdown.” We pre-pre-judged Mortal Kombat X, Homefront: The Revolution, Forza Horizon 2, BattleCry, Battlefield Hardline, and Hyrule Warriors in the first six segments of the show.
But we also wanted to worry and fret over a trio of delayed games (Batman: Arkham Knight, The Order: 1886, and Quantum Break) as well as speculate about what a Smash Bros.-style Mario Kart game would be like (spoiler alert: it would be AWESOME). And the eternal question (How much would you pay for an E.T. cartridge excavated from a landfill?) was answered.
Finally, we slipped a few E3 predictions in there. We’re probably way off the mark, but it’s that magical pre-E3 time when anything seems possible.

New Mortal Kombat X details: Persistent online battle, “multiple character variations,” more
Now that we’ve all had a chance to digest the debut trailer for Mortal Kombat X, WB Games has revealed a few more details about the game in their official announcement. For starters, they’ve confirmed the game will be released in 2015 for the new-generation consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) as well as the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
But the big news is that this addition to the Mortal Kombat franchise will make the battle for Earthrealm truly global for the first time. According to the announcement, Mortal Kombat X will “[launch] players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy.” Mortal Kombat X will also give players the option to select from multiple variations of each character in this battle. Each character variation will practice a different fighting style, requiring unique strategies from the player. Presumably, the variations will also be clad in different costumes as well.
Finally, the developers at NetherRealm Studios have promised that Mortal Kombat X will include many fan-favorite characters (such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero) as well as new fighters that “tie the tale together.”
“Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilise the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet,” said Ed Boon, the Creative Director at NetherRealm Studios. “The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all new graphics engine.”
Mortal Kombat X will make its first public appearance at next week’s E3 Expo.
Who’s Next? Mortal Kombat X officially announced
“It has begun!”
After years of rumors and speculation (and one wild countdown), WB Games and NetherRealm Studios have officially announced Mortal Kombat X. The tenth game in the long-running fighting franchise will be released sometime in 2015 for next-generation platforms.
According to NetherRealm, Mortal Kombat X will “[combine an] unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience.” You can get your first taste of this cinematic presentation in the game’s debut trailer, which features Sub-Zero and Scorpion (who else?) battling in a snowy forest. The trailer is scored with an original track from Wiz Khalifa titled “Can’t Be Stopped.”
A more in-depth official announcement will likely be released later today and we’ll surely hear more about Mortal Kombat X at this year’s E3 Expo.
Mortal Kombat website goes dark ahead of Mortal Kombat 10 reveal
The Mortal Kombat 10 teaser train just keeps rolling. This morning, the official Mortal Kombat website went dark. When it came back to life, the page was blank except for the redesigned Mortal Kombat dragon logo that appeared on the leaked “Who’s Next” poster.
Ed Boon’s Twitter countdown will expire on June 2, one week ahead of this year’s E3 Expo, so I think we’re definitely in store for a Mortal Kombat 10 announcement next Monday (can we call it “Mortal Monday”?).
And then there’s this…
Yes you are Next @wizkhalifa !! On June 2nd Kombat Kontinues… #WHOSNEXT

Thanks, Ed Boon! (Unless he’s trolling us.)
Ed Boon quasi-confirms Mortal Kombat 10 after possible poster leak
Ed Boon has been running a very unorthodox countdown with his Twitter account all month. If all goes according to plan, whatever Boon has in the hopper will be revealed on June 2. But it looks like a Reddit user may have beaten him to the punch by leaking the poster to your right.
The poster depicts a broken spine with the words “Who’s Next” and a slightly modified version of Mortal Kombat’s dragon logo. In 2011’s Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios encouraged players to perform X-Ray Moves, which frequently involved the breaking of an opponent’s bones. But I’m a tad concerned about the validity of the poster as the logo and the “Who’s Next” wording seem to just float there. The way the poster is oriented in the image, they should be at more of an angle. There’s also the matter of the fact that the Redditor who posted the poster, “ItsHappening24,” is a brand new user (and on that note, 24‘s Kiefer Sutherland has previously been linked to the next Mortal Kombat game).
However, Boon himself has endorsed the image by installing the “Who’s Next” text as his header image on Twitter and adopting the dragon as his user icon. And a quick Google Images search confirms that Boon is the only person to ever use that exact version of the Mortal Kombat dragon logo… oh my god, what does it mean?
Right now, it doesn’t mean anything. But the stars seem to be aligning and I’m pretty confident that Mortal Kombat 10 will be officially announced in just a few short days.
Mortal Kombat creator is secretly counting down to something on Twitter
Ed Boon loves Twitter. The Mortal Kombat maestro has had an account with the microblogging service since November 2008 and he has churned out more than 9,500 tweets in that time. Lately, he’s begun a coded countdown that is set to expire on June 2, just a week before the start of this year’s E3 Expo.
On Sunday, Boon tweeted “Square root of 841” to his followers (which is 29, by the way). Yesterday, he asked the Twitterverse to answer this question: “How many days in (non-leap-year) February?” IGN caught on to Boon’s secret countdown and, unless he’s given up, we’re all eagerly awaiting today’s veiled reference to 27.
According to previous statements made by Boon, multiple executives with WB Games, and 24‘s Kiefer Sutherland, NetherRealm Studios has already begun development on Mortal Kombat 10. Fans are definitely anxious to “Finish Him!” once more as the last game in the series, a total series reboot, was released in 2011.
Here’s hoping that the regularly playful Boon isn’t just toying with us ahead of gaming’s biggest showcase.
Kiefer Sutherland claims he’ll star in the next Mortal Kombat game
It caused a bit of an Internet brouhaha when Konami confirmed that Kiefer Sutherland would be voicing Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain instead of original voice actor David Hayter. But according to Sutherland, he’s about to insert himself into another long-running series: NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat saga. Speaking to IGN, the actor compared his work on Phantom Pain to another “huge” game he did recently, the next (and currently unannounced) Mortal Kombat game:
Sutherland said, “I did Mortal Kombat, and that’s such a huge game, but it’s so not like [MGS5].”
Sutherland’s been working on Metal Gear Solid for over a year, but said he completed Mortal Kombat “pretty quickly compared to [MGS5].” He did not specify his role.
Given his work on 24, Sutherland could easily slide into the role of Mortal Kombat’s resident supercop, Kurtis Stryker. Or perhaps NetherRealm is looking to put a new spin on a beloved character. Maybe Raiden will exhort the EarthRealm warriors to defeat Shao Kahn “or millions of people will die!” Or possibly they’ve decided that Scorpion should remind everyone of his hellbound fate (“Dammit!”) at every turn. Of course, there’s always the possibility that Sutherland will play a new character considering the events of 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot.
NetherRealm’s Ed Boon previously confirmed that development on the next Mortal Kombat game began in 2011.
