Confirmed: Kintaro, Kenshi, “Lady in Red” planned as Mortal Kombat DLC
UPDATE: NetherRealm Studios has confirmed to CVG that Kintaro, Kenshi and Scarlet, AKA the “Lady in Red,” will be the first three DLC characters.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: A purported scan from the May issue of GamePro is said to show the first three downloadable characters for Mortal Kombat.
The one-page image shows Kintaro, the four-armed Shokan boss from Mortal Kombat II; Kenshi, the blind swordsman first seen in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance; and “Lady in Red,” a mysterious new character that may or may not be new brand to the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Several red ninjas have made appearances in the Mortal Kombat universe universe. “Skarlet” was the fan name for a glitch that would change Mileena or Kitana’s costumes to red in Mortal Kombat. While “Ruby” fought alongside Ermac in an episode of the animated series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm. There’s also Sareena, a female ninja who bares a strong resemblence to the “Lady in Red” that first appeared as a minor character in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
Ed Boon has previously discussed who he’d like to see as DLC characters for Mortal Kombat and Kenshi was on the original list. So hopefully we’ll find out if this rumor is the real deal or just another “Hornbuckle” soon.

See Kratos in action in latest Mortal Kombat trailer
NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has been analyzed and dissected from nearly every angle. But the game’s latest trailer has definitely found a new corner to examine: gameplay footage of Kratos.
Kratos appears to be a natural addition to the Mortal Kombat universe. The God of War wields the Blades of Chaos in such a brutal way that they should be renamed the Blades of Kaos. And check out the awesome quick time event combos towards the end of the video.
Kratos will be available only in the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat when it ships to stores on April 19.
Raiden lights up this Mortal Kombat gameplay trailer
NetherRealm Studios has released over a dozen videos for Mortal Kombat since announcing the game at last year’s E3 expo, but the classic carnage never seems to get old. The subject of the latest video is the thunder god, Raiden, and he has added plenty of light to the new Nighttime Courtyard arena.
As every regular reader of Warp Zoned knows by now, Mortal Kombat will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 19.
Mortal Kombat hooks Kabal in GTTV reveal
The latest episode of GameTrailers TV includes the reveal of another Mortal Kombat character, the masked wasteland dweller Kabal!
Kabal has dropped his Elvis impersonation, but the hook swords and the Spin Dash special move remain, as does his dusty longcoat and Darth Vader-esque breathing apparatus. It might kill any MK cred I have, but Kabal was always one of my favorite characters (Stryker too), so this is welcome news. And check out his gruesome fatality in the video above.
Mortal Kombat will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 19. Which can’t come soon enough.
Mortal Kombat earns its Mature rating
Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has been promising that the upcoming reboot would be a brutal and hardcore return to the franchise’s Mature-rated days. Today, the ESRB revealed that he has kept his promise by awarding Mortal Kombat an M For Mature.
The rating was handed out for “Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity and Strong Language,” which is about what you’d expect to see in a Mature-rated Mortal Kombat. Although the full Rating Summary makes it look like the kombatants will be allowed to swear for the first time:
This is a fighting game in which players engage in one-on-one battles against characters from the fantasy-based Mortal Kombat universe. Players compete in a series of combative rounds in order to advance to different matches throughout the game. Players use swords, guns, chains, spikes, and supernatural attacks (e.g., fire, ice, lightning) to defeat a cast of human-like characters.
After an opponent is defeated at the end of a match, players have the option to perform finishing moves called ‘Fatalities.’ Many of these finishing moves depict over-the-top instances of violence: impalement, bone-crushing body snaps, execution-style gunshots to the head; large blood-splatter effects occur during these sequences, staining characters’ bodies and the ground. Several of these exaggerated finishing moves depict characters getting dismembered, ripped or sliced in half, stabbed, set on fire, or set to explode. During the course of the game, female characters sometimes wear revealing outfits that expose large amounts of cleavage; one female fighter is depicted partially nude, covered by a costume of thin cloth strips. Language such as ‘f**k’ occasionally appears in the dialogue.
Mortal Kombat will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 19.
Kombat Kontinues in latest Mortal Kombat trailer
With the PS3 demo now available for PlayStation Plus subscribers, NetherRealm Studios has unleashed a new trailer for Mortal Kombat and it is brutally awesome.
The two-minute preview gives us our first look at Ermac, Shang Tsung, Stryker and Kano along with the return of The Krypt and another glimpse at Kratos. There’s also plenty of Fatalities, X-Ray moves and a few quick snippets of the title’s four minigames (Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, Test Your Strike and Test Your Luck).
If you call yourself a Mortal Kombat fan, you must watch this trailer.
PlayStation Store update takes us back to Outworld
March 8 was Senior Editor Nicole Kline’s birthday and PlayStation must have taken notice as the PS Store’s update was pretty strong all around.
The Demos section is the star of the show here, with the anticipated Mortal Kombat for PlayStation Plus subscribers and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters for everyone. Sports fans should definitely check out the latter as it’s doing some really interesting things.
A lot of killer DLC has also arrived, with new content for Dragon Age II, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and that Need for Speed Hot Pursuit: The Porsche Unleashed pack we’ve been talking about. Even our (not so) beloved Mindjack got an add-on.
Lastly, you might want to be watching the sales, as the PSN Gamers Choice winners have been announced and these excellent titles are half off for PlayStation Plus subscribers and a third off for regular users. Hit the jump for the highlights and head to the PlayStation Blog for the full list. (more…)
Mortal Kombat introduces the Challenge Tower, wants you to cry
The newest feature revealed by NetherRealm Studios for the upcoming Mortal Kombat is the Challenge Tower. We could make a news post detailing all the insane scenarios shown and described in the trailer above (Test Your Might, Test Your Sight, etc), but you really should just see it for yourself. My favorite is when Mileena offers Scorpion a Teddy Bear, which he refuses. Frustrated at how long she spent making it, the two have no choice but to battle it out.
Mortal Kombat will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 19, with a PlayStation Plus-exclusive demo planned for March 8.
