Uncharted 4 discovers the top spot on the NPD’s list of best-selling games for May 2016

uncharted4-header

The NPD Group has revealed their tally of the best-selling games from May 2016, and four new titles were battling it out for the top spot. But ultimately, Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End bested them all for the #1 spot on the list.

The three shooters that made the month of May a very crowded time for fans of the genre slotted in just behind Uncharted 4, and id Software’s Doom claimed the silver medal as the runner-up. And in the duel for the “Hero Shooter” crown, Blizzard took the first round as strong sales for Overwatch ensured a finish in the #3 spot. That means Gearbox had to settle for a bit less of the market thanks to Battleborn‘s fourth place debut.

Overall, the retail side of the industry did very well in May, which NPD’s Liam Callahan explained to GamesIndustry.biz: “Overall trends across new physical software, hardware, and accessories in May 2016 rose by 4%, or $19.3 million, due to 18% growth of new physical software, which offset the 10% decline of hardware, and the 2% decline in accessories”.

A complete look at last month’s best-selling retail games (which also includes Grand Theft Auto V, Minecraft, Dark Souls III, and others) can be found after the break. (more…)

Xbox Store Today: Overwatch, TMNT Mutants in Manhattan, OlliOlli 2, Not A Hero

overwatch-header

Strap on your cape, we’re going heroing in today’s Xbox Games Store update.

First up is Overwatch, Blizzard’s massive “Hero Shooter” that drops players into the arena as their chosen hero (there’s almost two dozen… though a few look pretty villainous to me). It’s now available to download for the Xbox One, and I’m sure plenty of you are already playing it.

Also available to download this week is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, a beat ’em up from Platinum Games starring the beloved heroes in a half-shell. Featuring four-player online co-op on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360, Mutants in Manhattan will pit the Turtles against Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and many others.

Switching gears slightly, Roll7 will release Not A Hero: Super Snazzy Edition for the Xbox One this week. Though it says “Not A Hero” on the tin, players will most definitely feel like heroes as they blast their way through a crime-ridden city in the very British side-scroller. Roll7 also released OlliOlli2: XL Edition, their side-scrolling skateboard sim, for the Xbox One this week. Both games can even be purchased together, and for a discounted price, as part of the “BunnyLord Pro Hater Pack.”

More details on all of these titles can be found after the break. (more…)

Overwatch, TMNT Mutants in Manhattan, Downwell, more added to PS Store

This week’s PlayStation Store update is all about heroes of different shapes and sizes. And no where is that more apparent than Overwatch, which is officially reporting for duty. Blizzard’s “Hero Shooter” is now available to download on the PS4, and players will be able to choose from nearly two different dozen heroes as they battle it out with others online.

Also available to download this week is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, a new beat ’em up starring the heroes in a half-shell. Developed for both the PS4 and PS3 by Platinum Games, Mutants in Manhattan features a cel-shaded art style based on the TMNT comics and an original story by Tom Waltz.

Finally this week, Downwell drops its hero down a well (because, of course it does)… I guess it’s a good thing you’re packing downward-firing Gunboots. Originally released for mobile devices, Downwell can be purchased as a Cross-Buy title for the PS Vita and PS4.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And a complete rundown of this week’s discounts and brand new game add-ons is available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Conan’s latest Clueless Gamer features Overwatch, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey… and butts

Conan O’Brien’s latest “Clueless Gamer” segment featured Blizzard’s Overwatch, where he was joined by two special guests from Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey. And a very special Iron Throne. “Clueless Gamer” almost inspires me to want to stream games because it’s so entertaining to watch funny people be bad at them. And that’s totally me: funny and bad at things. Maybe I shouldn’t limit myself to streaming video games but just record myself trying to do anything at all– until the final episode where I visit a botanical garden and, if cartoons have taught me anything, get eaten by a giant venus flytrap.

As explained by Conan, the objective of Overwatch is to “just shoot each other,” and shoot each other they do, with Peter Dinklage either being great at video games or maybe harboring some blood vendetta against the other two (or maybe there’s some residual anger from that Destiny thing). Characters briefly seen or mentioned in the segment include Junkrat, Zenyatta, Hanzo, D.Va, Lucio, as well as some extensive Widowmaker. And I’m sure you can imagine why: Butts, Butts, Butts. So many shiny orbs of buttocks, like glorious reflective garden gazing balls. What was I talking about?

Overwatch was released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One today.

Soldier 76 stars in the final Overwatch animated short

Our long wait is almost over, Overwatch will be available beginning tomorrow for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. But Blizzard has one last animated short to debut before the game’s launch: Soldier 76.

In a previous life, Soldier 76 was known as John Morrison, the leader of Overwatch. He lead his team to victory in the Omnic Wars, a clash between robots and humans that took place well before the events of the game. Now, he’s a disgraced former agent, who still takes to the streets to dispense his own brand of law and order. Yes, you can take your pick… Solider 76 is Batman or The Punisher or Travis Bickle or Judge Dredd or any other one man army. But as the title of this short implies, he is also a “Hero.”

Blizzard has built quite a universe for Overwatch, and I’m genuinely sad that “Hero” is the final animated short (for now, at least). If you missed any of the others (“Recall,” “Alive,” and “Dragons“), I recommend you remedy that immediately.

New Retail Releases: Overwatch, TMNT Mutants in Manhattan, More

newreleases052216

Another week, another handful of new releases. However, one of the most-anticipated games of the last few years will be available on store shelves this week, so that’s certainly something to celebrate.

Blizzard began working on their secretive “Titan MMO” project more than ten years, and while the game was eventually scrapped, parts of it were incorporated into Overwatch, a unique “Hero Shooter” for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Rather than populate its game with generic character types, Blizzard chose to create dozens of unique “Heroes” for Overwatch, and they gave each one their own personality and fighting style. Overwatch is very similar to the recently-released Battleborn, and I’m sure the two games will be compared and contrasted for many years to come.

Also available this week is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, a Platinum Games-developed beat ’em up for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360. Mutants in Manhattan isn’t a simple movie adaptation, and instead features a comics-inspired art style and an original storyline not tied to any previous incarnation of the Ninja Turtles.

Finally this week, a trio of lesser-known games will also be available on store shelves for the first time. The list includes Dungeons II (PS4), a tactical strategy game; Adam’s Venture: Origins (PS4), a narrative adventure game; and Tropico 5: Penultimate Edition (Xbox One), a repackaged re-release of the city builder with additional bonus material.

We’ll be back soon to look at the latest digital releases on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop throughout the rest of the week.

Hanzo and Genji are the “Dragons” at the center of Blizzard’s latest Overwatch short

With Overwatch just a week away, Blizzard has released a new animated short to give players further insight into the lives of Hanzo and Genji. I don’t want to spoil anything, so let me just suggest that if you liked the Winston and Tracer shorts, you should drop everything and watch this one too.

Overwatch, Blizzard’s upcoming MOBA-like arena shooter, will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 24.

Second Overwatch short features a very Batman-like Tracer/Widowmaker rooftop fight

Blizzard has released the second animated short based of their upcoming shooter Overwatch, and it should give everyone watching a Batman: The Animated Series flashback.

Fan favorite Tracer and deadly assassin Widowmaker dash through London in a rooftop fight that stands with the best the Caped Crusader had to offer in the mid 90s. Also, there’s a Robot Pope who preaches peace and love (and possibly love) between humans and machines. Be sure to check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Blizzard plans to release two more Overwatch animated shorts before the game’s May 24 launch on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And don’t forget the Open Beta kicks off on May 3.
