ZombiU was unprofitable and there are no plans for a sequel

While Wii U exclusive ZombiU has garnered a well-deserved reputation for being a frightening video game with characters that have a frustratingly short mortality rate, publisher Ubisoft has essentially shot down any chance of a sequel. The company’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, has revealed that the game did not come close to seeing a profit on their investment on Nintendo’s new machine and, as a result, there are no plans to move forward with a sequel or that ZombiU 2 prototype Creative Director Jean-Philippe Caro tweeted about two months ago.

He also revealed that the sales figures for ZombiU affected another Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends. The game was significantly delayed from its original Spring 2013 release date so that it could be expanded to be a multiplatform title. “We must find a way to ensure the creativity of those games could have a big enough audience,” said Guillemot. “We hope it will take off. At the moment, we’ve said ‘let’s do through Christmas and see where we are from there.'”

However, the quote does not spell the end of Ubisoft’s support for the Wii U. Maxime Beland, Creative Director of the upcoming Wii U Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist has described the Wii U’s GamePad as a great fit for the game, saying, “Ubisoft Toronto is looking at new technology and seeing in which ways their features make sense to use for our brands.”

Ubisoft’s Fall 2013 lineup will be well represented at this year’s E3 Expo as the publisher plans to display five titles at the gaming showcase, as well as multiple unannounced next-generation games:

  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
  • Rayman Legends
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist
  • Watch Dogs

Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference will take place on Monday, June 10 at 6:00 PM (Eastern Time). The company will post a livestream of the presentation on YouTube for everyone who can’t attend the E3 Expo. Updates from the show floor will also be posted on Ubisoft’s Facebook page, Twitter feed, and official blog during E3 week.

“This is a pivotal moment for the video game industry, and E3 is the opportunity for us to share our vision for the future,” said Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO. “We have many incredible games in development, and we’re especially excited to share more on our next-gen titles, which will deliver more connected, immersive and interactive experiences to our fans.”

So, any guesses on what Ubisoft’s unannounced next-gen games will be?

Nintendo Download: Rayman Legends Challenges App, Mega Man IV, More

Rayman Legends may have been delayed until August to put it on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but Ubisoft has made good on their promise and added the Wii U-exclusive Rayman Legends Challenges App to the Wii U eShop. It’s a free download that includes access to four of the game’s levels: Land of the Livid Dead, Neverending Pit, Infinite Tower, and the GamePad-controlled Murfy’s Dungeon. If that weren’t enough, weekly online challenges are also included in the Challenges App.

Also available this week, on the 3DS eShop, is Mega Man IV, the Blue Bomber’s 1992 NES adventure.

Hit the jump for more details on both of these titles as well as three other new games released as part of this week’s Nintendo Download. (more…)

Nintendo brings 5,000 Wii U demo kiosks to stores

Nintendo has announced that they’ve completed their rollout of Wii U demo kiosks, installing over 5,000 of the machines at Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, and Toys R Us.

Not every kiosk will feature the same titles, but playable demos of the Nintendo-published Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Sing Party will be included at most kiosks. Some will also feature demos of Ubisoft’s ZombiU and Rayman Legends. Other games will be available in video form. I tried the demo kiosk at my local Target this weekend and the Wii U GamePad was already broken.

The Wii U console and at least two dozen launch games will be available on November 18.

Rayman Legends will arrive on Wii U in early 2013

Rayman Legends was previously pegged as a “launch window” title for the Wii U, which put its released date anywhere from late November to March 31, 2013. Today, in a statement to VideoGamer.com, Ubisoft confirmed that we definitely won’t be playing it until early 2013:

“Rayman Legends will launch worldwide in the first quarter of 2013. We’re happy that fans are excited about the game, and we are taking the time to make sure we deliver a game that lives up to and hopefully exceeds their expectations. We’ll have more details to share soon.”

But don’t worry, Ubisoft still has a full slate of day one Wii U titles scheduled for November 18 including Assassin’s Creed III, Just Dance 4, and ZombiU.

Ubisoft @ E3 12: Rayman Legends gets demoed on the Wii U

Michael Micholic was onstage at Ubisoft’s press conference to talk about Rayman Legends. But he did more than talk about it – he gave a live demo on the Wii U. While the game itself looks pretty adorable on its own, I couldn’t help but stare at the controller every single chance I could. The controllers were wired, but Micholic assured us they were early controllers and that the final models would “of course” be wireless.

And then, suddenly, the game turned into a platforming pseudo-rhythm game. I hope I wasn’t the only one who thought that was rad. I’m not really sure what to make of all of these bells and whistles, but I’m actually interested in the Wii U for the first time… ever.
