All Articles: Rise of the Tomb Raider

Xbox Store Today: Duke Nukem 3D, WWE 2K17, Gears of War 4, more

Re-releases and remasters have been extremely popular over the last few years, but I have to admit, I never imagined Duke Nukem 3D would receive a new deluxe package from Gearbox Software. Yet, here we are, and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour is now available to download for the Xbox One. In addition to the groundbreaking first person shooter from 1996, 20th Anniversary World Tour includes a new Episode from the original designers, new music from the game’s original composer, and new “Duke Talk” from the original voice of Duke Nukem.

Xbox One owners looking for more new titles on the Xbox Games Store might also be interested in Gears of War 4, which is now available to download without all the “Ultimate Edition” extras. The standard version of the game will still include a brand new campaign starring JD Fenix and his friends, the Horde 3.0 cooperative multiplayer mode, and a free copy of the game for Windows 10 PCs.

If you’d rather wrestle with some human-sized behemoths, WWE 2K17 is now available to download for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 this week. The latest wrestling sim from 2K Games will feature “the most authentic WWE gameplay ever” and “the biggest roster of WWE and NXT Superstars and Legends to date.”

We started with an unlikely re-release, and we end with a pair of “Game of the Year” style collections. Square Enix will bundle together Rise of the Tomb Raider, all of its DLC, and some brand new content in a special 20 Year Celebration Edition. And Konami will relaunch Hideo Kojima’s final entry in the Metal Gear Solid saga as Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience, which will include Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, and all the previously-released DLC in a new compilation.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

PlayStation VR launch games, Dragon Quest Builders, WWE 2K17, more added to PS Store

playstationVRIt’s a big week for Sony as the consolemaker is all set to launch the PlayStation VR headset this Thursday, October 13. Naturally, their splashy hardware launch will be joined by an equally impressive slate of new software including Batman: Arkham VR, DriveClub VR, Rez Infinite, and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League. All told, more than two dozen titles compatible with PlayStation VR will soon to be available to download from the PlayStation Store.

That includes Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, which made its PS4 debut this week after a year of Xbox One/PC exclusivity. In addition to including all the previously-released DLC to Lara Croft’s latest adventure, Crystal Dynamics added a special chapter that players will be able to explore using Sony’s virtual reality headset.

For those who plan to pass over PlayStation VR, there’s still plenty of big new releases on the PlayStation Store this week, and that includes Dragon Quest Builders (PS4), Square Enix’s Minecraft-like action RPG; WWE 2K17 (PS4, PS3), the latest wrestling sim from 2K Games; and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour (PS4), a re-release of the famed first person shooter.

And speaking of re-releases, Konami will bring Hideo Kojima’s Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain together in a single package as Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience, and Rockstar will add Red Dead Revolver to the list of PS2-On-PS4 titles.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And a full rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts is available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

New Retail Releases: PlayStation VR, Gears of War 4, Dragon Quest Builders, More

newreleases100916

The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive launched the “Great VR Arms Race” a few months ago, but virtual reality enthusiasts will get a much more affordable option this week with Sony’s release of PlayStation VR.

More than two dozen games will launch alongside the PS4’s VR headset, and there looks to be a little something for everybody including the superheroics of Batman: Arkham VR, the high octane racing of Driveclub VR, the robotic combat of RIGS Mechanized Combat League, and the gory stealth of Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. Square Enix will also bring Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration Edition to the PS4 this week, and the game’s PS4 debut will receive “Blood Ties,” a unique VR-compatible chapter.

Rather than shy away from Sony’s juggernaut, Microsoft is charging into the fray head-on with the launch of the “Standard Edition” of Gears of War 4 for the PC and Xbox One. While this version of the game doesn’t include the Season Pass, it does feature the same action-packed co-op campaign for JD Fenix and friends.

Square Enix will deliver a game that’s a bit more colorful than Gears of War 4… but no less post-apocalyptic… to store shelves this week with the PS4 launch of Dragon Quest Builders. Players will return to the time of the original Dragon Warrior and rebuild Alefgard (using a Minecraft-like crafting system) after the destruction caused by the Dragonlord’s monstrous allies.

Rather than dwelling on the cage match between Sony and Microsoft, we could turn our attention to WWE 2K17, which will be available this week for the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360. 2K’s latest wrestling sim stars Brock Lesnar, and it features a major focus on the popular NXT promotion.

Finally this week, Konami will package Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain together on the PS4 and Xbox One in Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience.

A full look at all of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

See Lara Croft fight zombies in Rise of the Tomb Raider’s “Blood Ties” trailer

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available this Fall in a special 20 Year Celebration Edition, and Crystal Dynamics has added a ton of extra content to the game to mark Lara’s landmark birthday.

The new “Blood Ties” chapter will let players explore Croft Manor, which has become overgrown with weeds and rot after years of neglect. The mansion used to be Lara’s home, but after discovering the secrets her father hid behind its walls, it transforms into “Lara’s Nightmare” as zombies overtake the halls and rooms. You can get a sneak peek at both “Blood Ties” and “Lara’s Nightmare” in the new trailer embedded above.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration Edition will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 11. And don’t forget, PC and Xbox One owners who previously purchased the game will also be able to obtain all the 20 Year Celebration Edition content as standalone downloads or as part of the Season Pass.

Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PS4 on October 11 in 20 Year Celebration Edition; Bonus content also available on PC/Xbox One

riseofthetombraider-20yearSquare Enix has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of Tomb Raider all year long, and it all culminates this October with the release of the Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration Edition for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The 20 Year Celebration Edition will mark Rise of the Tomb Raider’s PS4 debut after last year’s PC/Xbox One exclusivity period, and it’ll give players a chance to dive into the sequel, along with all previously-released downloadable content, and a huge amount of new content. The 20 Year Celebration content starts with Blood Ties, a new Story chapter that allows players to explore Croft Manor, and Lara’s Nightmare, which pits the adventurer against a zombie invasion of her home. PlayStation VR owners will even get the chance to explore Croft Manor in a special first-person view.

In addition to new locales, players will be able to re-explore the main game in new ways, including an “Extreme Survivor” difficulty setting and a Co-Op Endurance Mode. “Extreme Survivor” will remove all Checkpoints from the game, while the Co-Op Endurance Mode gives two players the chance to raid tombs and survive the brutal wilderness together. Square Enix will also add five new in-game models to the 20 Year Celebration Edition for Lara based on some of her classic looks from the last two decades. Finally, players who pre-order Rise of the Tomb Raider’s 20 Year Celebration Edition will also receive a Limited Edition containing an exclusive Art Book.

But don’t worry, if you previously purchased Rise of the Tomb Raider for the PC or Xbox One, all of the 20 Year Celebration content (minus PlayStation VR support, obviously) will be available to download separately. And those who purchased the Season Pass on either platform will get everything for free.

Square Enix will bring a climbing wall, go-kart course, and 7 playable games to Comic-Con

squareenix-logo

Square Enix doesn’t just want to play their games at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, they want you to experience them as well. Taking over a section of San Diego at 7th Avenue and Market Street (in the city’s Gaslamp District), the publisher will host a special Square Enix Experience on July 22 and July 23 from noon until 10:00 PM (Pacific Time).

Fans who queue up to try their hand at the physical challenges will be greeted by a rock climbing wall from Rise of the Tomb Raider, a go-kart track from Final Fantasy XV, and a bungee run from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – The Icarus Dash
Enter the dark world of Deus Ex Mankind Divided and become covert agent Adam Jensen without the trench coat and fashionable shades. Showing off the Icarus Dash move, participants will have to run as fast as they can with a bungee cord on their back while shooting a laser gun at targets.

Final Fantasy XV – The Royal Race
Fans can race each other in this themed, go-kart race that takes them through the various landscapes of Final Fantasy XV. Visitors can also have a photo taken to commemorate their race.

Rise of the Tomb Raider – Glacier Climb
The Rise of the Tomb Raider Glacier Climb, inspired by the opening sequence of the game, will allow fans to test their skill and will against the hostile environments Lara faces. The 30-foot glacier wall covered in snow, offers an incredible opportunity for fans to experience Lara’s world. Climbers can have their photo taken while on the wall to capture their adventure. This obstacle challenge is the latest event in the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration (#TombRaider20), a year-long salute to the iconic heroine.

But don’t worry, the Square Enix Experience will also have plenty of games to play. Players can relax with a beer (if they’re over 21) and play several upcoming Square Enix titles including Deux Ex: Mankind Divided, Dragon Quest Builders, Final Fantasy XV, I Am Setsuna, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and World of Final Fantasy. Demo kiosks for all of these games will also be available at Square Enix’s booth (#3829) on the Comic-Con show floor.

Square Enix will also host a number of panels during the convention, and you can find a complete catalog of the publisher’s presentations after the break. (more…)
