PGA Tour 15 pushed back to Spring; Need For Speed, Star Wars: Battlefront on track for 2015

EA-logoElectronic Arts delivered their quarterly financial presentation yesterday and the company’s executives gave investors a quick peek into what they have planned for 2015.

Andrew Wilson, EA’s Chief Executive Officer, confirmed that a more detailed dive into the publisher’s 2015 schedule would happen at their next quarterly presentation, but he was able to share a few new announcements. First, Wilson revealed that the release of PGA Tour 15 has been officially delayed. Originally planned for an early 2015 launch, the PS4/Xbox One game (which won’t star Tiger Woods) will now make its way to stores in the Spring.

The CEO followed up that announcement with the happier news that the next Need For Speed game and Star Wars: Battlefront are still on track for late 2015/early 2016. Battlefront will be released during the “holiday quarter” (presumably to coincide with Star Wars: The Force Awakens) while Need For Speed will be released sometime in “Fiscal Year 2016” (which runs from April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016).

In addition to the titles mentioned by Wilson, EA has a massive number of semi-announced games in development including Mass Effect 4, Star Wars: Visceral, and Criterion’s Vehicle Game. While it’s unlikely that any of them will be released this year, we may learn more about them in future financial presentations and at this year’s E3 Expo.

Watch out for the flaming battleship hazard in the PGA Tour 15 E3 trailer

It looks like EA Sports won’t be ditching their realistic golf simulator to focus on fantasy courses. Sure, the fantasy courses will be there too, but PGA Tour 15 will also feature a heavy sim component.

The game will be the first EA Sports title to utilize the power of the Frostbite 3 engine to render stunning courses and open up the golf experience like never before. With the ability to stream full environments, players will truly be able to play the ball as it lies no matter where it lands.

This newfound freedom will come in handy not just for PGA Tour courses fans know and love, but also in the new fantasy courses that will make their debut in EA Sports PGA Tour. Why take two shots to get a ball around a beached battleship in the Battlefield Paracel Storm course when you can fire a ball right at the bow, bounce it off the deck and land on the green in one?

“One of my favorite things about the game is discovering new shortcuts and alternate routes to the hole on fantasy courses,” stated Executive Producer Brent Nielsen. “Players are encouraged to wander off the beaten path and find new roads to success. Now that the entire course is open at all times you are as free to be as creative and imaginative as you want in your pursuit of a low score.”

PGA Tour 15 is in development at EA Tiburon and will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One in Spring 2015.

EA @ E3 14: PGA Tour 15 goes extreme

eagamese32014-header

It looks like EA Sports isn’t just leaving Tiger Woods behind for their next golf game, they’re leaving behind realistic golf games as we know them. Even though it’s titled PGA Tour, the next golf game from EA Sports will include “extreme fantasy course” such as the middle of a naval battle.

Developed using the Frostbite 3 engine, PGA Tour will be available in Spring 2015. Fore! (That’s how many copies I plan to buy if this is half as much fun as it sounds).

EA Sports will launch NBA Live 15 in late 2014, PGA Golf 15 in early 2015

electronicartslogoEA Sports, specifically the Tiburon team, has several next-generation games planned for release this year and into 2015. In addition to the previously announced Madden NFL 15 (which will launch on August 26), the developer will release NBA Live 15 during the last three months of 2014 as well as an untitled PGA Tour golf game in the first three months of 2015.

It’s currently unknown if NBA Live 15 and Tiburon’s golf game are also in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but it should be noted that last year’s NBA Live 14 only launched for the PS4 and Xbox One. The next PGA Tour golf game will also be the first since EA Sports parted ways with Tiger Woods in October and the publisher may want to use this opportunity to skip the PS3 and Xbox 360.

According to Andrew Wilson, EA’s CEO, the development team at Tiburon has been using “community feedback” to fine tune NBA Live 15 and the next PGA Tour golf game will be “something entirely new.” Hopefully, we’ll learn more about both soon.

After parting ways with EA, Tiger Woods’ agent is talking with other game publishers

tigerwoodspgatour14-boxOn Tuesday, EA Sports revealed that their next PGA Tour golf game won’t feature Tiger Woods in the title or on the cover. Now, Tiger wants everyone to know that he’s in discussions to roar back with a new publisher and a new game.

Speaking to ESPN, Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg said: “We had an incredible run. Outside of [John] Madden, you would be hard pressed to find a sports figure that meant as much to a video game company as Tiger meant to EA. But times are changing and EA had to re-evaluate the partnership, and frankly so did we.”

According to Steinberg, this re-evaluation includes discusses with another publisher about creating a Tiger Woods-branded game. However, outside of EA, a relatively small number of golf games have been released in the last decade. But there have been a few. For example, all three consolemakers have their own humorous take on the sport (Sony’s Hot Shots Golf, Microsoft’s Powerstar Golf, and Nintendo’s Mario Golf) and Take-Two owns the rights to the acclaimed Links series, so perhaps there’s a new video game in Tiger’s future yet.

EA’s next PGA Tour game won’t star Tiger Woods

pgatour15EA Sports has announced they’re hard at work on their first next-generation PGA Tour golf game. But they’ve also confirmed that when it releases, it won’t include a Tiger Woods endorsement.

Tiger Woods and EA first teamed up for 1998’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 99 and a new entry in the series was released every year for the next 15 years (culminating with this year’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14). It’s unknown if EA will enlist another athlete to be the game’s featured golfer or if they’ll revert to the “PGA Tour [Year]” styling.

However, EA was willing to share the first screenshot of the in-progress game. As you can see, the game includes considerably more detail than the screenshot from current-generation consoles. The publisher has also hinted that the next PGA Tour game may be offered through a DLC or free-to-play model:

EA Sports golf fans have always loved authentic courses and players, but they’ve also asked for more choice and customization in how and where they play. We’re working on a new approach to deliver the best golf experience to our fans — we think you’ll love it.

EA has promised that more information about the next PGA Tour game will be released soon.
