Nintendo Download: Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Mighty No. 9, more
It’s a big day for the Nintendo eShop as three major new releases are joined by four classics of yesteryear through the storefront’s Virtual Console section.
Leading the way is Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, an RPG for the Wii U that drops the medieval adventurers from a Fire Emblem-like adventure into a present-day version of Tokyo inspired by the Persona series. It’s joined on the Wii U eShop by Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the latest athletic battle royale between the two mascots, and Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune’s side-scrolling spiritual successor to Mega Man.
Also available this week on the Wii U eShop is a trio of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. The three roguelike RPGs including Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2006), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team (originally released for the DS in 2006), and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (originally released for the DS in 2009).
Finally, Capcom will add the Super NES classic, Super Ghouls N Ghosts, to the 3DS eShop. Chivalrous Arthur will battle demons, devils, and giant beasts to rescue his Princess from the evil Emperor Sardius. Still just as great today as it was in 1991.
More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)
New Retail Releases: Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, Mighty No. 9, Mario & Sonic at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, More
The major game publishers clearly didn’t want to compete with the annual E3 Expo last week, but a number of them are back this week with a handful of intriguing new titles.
Leading the way is Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, an Atlus/Nintendo collaboration for the Wii U that mashes together characters you’d find in a Fire Emblem game with the mood of a Persona title.
Nintendo is also getting ready for the Summer Games this week with the release of Mario & Sonic at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games for the Wii U. Players will get to try out 14 Olympic sports including soccer, track, and rugby.
Another highly-anticipated title this week, though for very different reasons, is Mighty No. 9 for the PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One (it’ll also be available digitally for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360). Keiji Inafune’s tribute to the Mega Man franchise has been facing development woes since the very beginning, and it’ll be interesting to see how the final product came together.
Elsewhere on store shelves this week will be The Technomancer, an action RPG for the PS4 and Xbox One from Spiders; and MXGP 2, the latest motorcycle racer from Milestone, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Finally, Microsoft will re-release Minecraft: Xbox One Edition in a special “Favorites Pack” bundle that includes the base game and seven additional add-ons (Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack, Natural Texture Pack, City Texture Pack, Fantasy Texture Pack, Festive Mash-up, and Halo Mash-up).
We’ll be back later this week with a look at all the new additions to the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo eShop.
UPDATE: The release of The Technomancer was pushed back a week to June 28.
Nintendo announces a Special Edition for Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE
Atlus and Nintendo have been working on their “Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem” crossover for quite some time now, but the marriage between two of Japan’s biggest RPG franchises will finally walk down the aisle as Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE on June 24. To make this collaboration extra special, Nintendo announced today that the game will also be available in a Special Edition package.
Priced at $79.99, and available only through Amazon and GameStop, the Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE: Special Edition will include a nice batch of goodies:
Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE: Special Edition Contents

The DLC Packs, which will contain additional quests and costumes, will also be available on June 24. Players who don’t spring for the Special Edition will be able to purchase them through the Wii U eShop for $1.99 apiece.
Nintendo is bringing Kirby: Planet Robobot, Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, more to PAX East 2016
Nintendo will showcase five upcoming games at this weekend’s PAX East convention… unfortunately, The Legend of Zelda Wii U didn’t make the cut. However, Star Fox Zero, which will also be available in stores on April 22, did.
Congoers will also have the chance to try out a few games making their playable debut including Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE (Wii U) and a trio of 3DS games. Fans of Nintendo’s handheld will be able to try Kirby: Planet Robobot, Monster Hunter Generations, and Metroid Prime: Federation Force on the show floor for the first time. And speaking of Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Nintendo also confirmed this morning that it’ll be released on August 19.
If you’re unfamiliar with any of the games in Nintendo’s PAX East 2016 lineup, more details are available after the break. (more…)
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem will be released in US as Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE on June 24
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, which was released in Japan this past December as Genei Ibun Roku FE, finally has a North American release date… and a new name. Now known as Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE, the Atlus-developed RPG will be released for the Wii U on June 24.
Taking place in modern-day Japan, Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE combines the “deep RPG gameplay from an Atlus game and the adrenaline-fueled fun of a pop idol concert.” But there’s also monsters to slay and a world to save:
Slay monsters—and slay like a pop star—all at the same time, in this brand-new RPG from acclaimed developer Atlus. A sinister force from another dimension has invaded modern-day Tokyo, resulting in a fantastical barrage of style, fashion, music and, of course, danger. So play to your strengths in high-energy turn-based battles, then fuse items to craft powerful weapons and crush your foes. Around every corner you’ll find fan-service—including Fire Emblem references—original songs by Japanese entertainment giant Avex, dungeons themed after the entertainment industry and eye-catching music performances.
Nintendo and Atlus have decided to make exclusive use of Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE’s Japanese language track, and include English subtitles, for its North American release to stay true to the setting.
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is now Genei Ibun Roku FE
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has apparently undergone a name change as Nintendo reannounced the Atlus-developed RPG with the working title Genei Ibun Roku FE. According to GameSpot, the temporary English title is loosely translated as “Mirage Spinoff FE,” though the game will likely have a different title altogether when it launches for the Wii U in 2016.
The E3 2015 trailer embedded is typical of the Persona franchise’s hyperkinetic style, and the GameSpot profile describes the game as a Persona game that uses elements of the Fire Emblem franchise. Put simply, that means the game takes place in modern day Tokyo, but includes Fire Emblem characters as summons (known as Mirages) for the two pop idols at the center of the story.
“If you’re going to be very strict about it, it is a Shin Megami Tensei game, but it’s only similar to it, it’s not exactly like Shin Megami Tensei,” [Atlus Producer Shinjiro] Takada explained. “But we put Fire Emblem elements into that kind of framework.”
Yesterday, Takada was a guest on the Nintendo Treehouse Live set, where he sat down to discuss Genei Ibun Roku FE and show off some additional gameplay. You can find that video after the break. (more…)
Project Giant Robot, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Yoshi’s Woolly World move closer to release
Nintendo shuffled around a few games in an update to their 2015 release calendar yesterday, but all three feel closer than they did a week ago. And one game in particular is now much closer to launching.
Project Giant Robot, one of Shigeru Miyamoto’s “GamePad Experiments,” has been given a “First Half 2015” release window by Nintendo. That means the giant robot battler will be released for the Wii U sometime in the next eight weeks. Not bad for a game that we still know very little about.
Speaking of games we know very little about, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem has been given a “Winter 2015” launch date for Japan. The RPG mashup’s American and European launch is still listed as “To Be Determined,” but it should cross the Pacific shortly afterwards.
Finally, Yoshi’s Woolly World still has a “Fall 2015” release date for North America, even though its been penciled in for a June 28 launch in Europe. Hopefully, that means Fall will turn into Summer and we get Yoshi’s Woolly World on this side of Atlantic sooner rather than later.
The remainder of Nintendo’s release calendar looks just like it did last time as Star Fox Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Fatal Frame 5, Project Guard, and Devil’s Third are all still on track for a release sometime in 2015.
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem in development for Wii U
If there’s one thing Japanese gamers love, it’s a crazy crossover. Nintendo teamed with Tecmo Koei last year to unite the worlds of Pokemon and Nobunaga’s Ambition in Pokemon Conquest. This year, The Big N (and the development team at Intelligent Systems) will join forces with Atlus to bring together the Shin Megami Tensei series and the Fire Emblem series in Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem.
All we know right now is that “development is in progress” and that the game is coming exclusively to the Wii U. But I’m sure RPG fans are supremely excited.
