Ubisoft has three unannounced games coming in Early 2020 but they’ve delayed Skull and Bones yet again
Is Ubisoft hard at work on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 7? Nobody’s entirely sure, but the publisher has confirmed that they’ve got three unannounced “AAA” games in the hopper, all set to launch sometime between January 1 and March 31 in 2020.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke a bit about these games, calling them “very distinct gaming experiences,” during the company’s most recent quarterly financial report:
We are coming with three very distinct gaming experiences. We wanted to give those games the development they needed because we know they’re long-term sellers, so it’s important that they come with the best opportunity.
We won’t say anything more today. You’ll know more soon.
Sadly, the publisher also said that players hoping to sail the high seas in Skull and Bones will have to wait a bit longer. The pirate-themed multiplayer was penciled in to launch this year, but now it won’t be released until sometime after April 1, 2020. This is the second major delay for the game (it was originally scheduled to be out in 2018), but the development team provided a short update via Twitter, promising that “[their] focus remains on quality”:
We’re going to batten down the hatches and push back on the game’s arrival—this is a challenging news for us all, but it’s what’s needed to make Skull & Bones as awesome as it can be!
Our focus remains on quality first and we’re grateful for your undying support ☠️⚔️ pic.twitter.com/ZCt85tY3TG

Skull and Bones will not be on display during Ubisoft’s presentation at E3 2019, but presumably the three unannounced games will be.
Launch date for Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones sails away to 2019-2020
The “X” on Ubisoft’s treasure map of upcoming games for Skull and Bones originally marked a spot for “Fall 2018,” but it looks like the pirate simulation from Ubisoft Singapore has been delayed. According to the publisher, it’ll now be released sometime in 2019 or 2020.
Because they feel their recent releases have “excellent momentum,” Ubisoft didn’t feel the need to crowd their 2018 calendar with yet another product, and delayed Skill and Bones to “give itself more time” to develop the game:
In line with previous practices and in view of the acceleration of our digital transformation, growth in back-catalog sales, and excellent momentum of recent releases, Ubisoft has decided to give itself more time to develop Skull and Bones to offer players an even more engaging experience. Skull and Bones is now scheduled for release in 2019-20.
So what does Ubisoft have on tap for 2018? The publisher confirmed that The Crew 2, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, and “an unannounced franchise title” will all be released this year. The Crew 2 arrives in stores in June, and we’ll likely learn more about the latter two titles at this year’s E3 Expo.
Ubisoft arrr-nnounced Skull and Bones at E3 2017 with two trailers
Travel back with me to the year 2013, and Ubisoft’s launch of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The then-newest game in the franchise featured a very popular pirate theme, and many fans asked Ubisoft to produce a full game about buccaneers sailing the seven seas.
Today, at the 2017 E3 Expo, they delivered with a debut Cinematic Trailer (with a very serious cover of Seal’s “Crazy”) for Skull and Bones. Developed by Ubisoft Singapore, players will go on a quest for booty in Skull and Bones, as well as engage in naval combat with other pirate ships during the “Golden Age of Piracy”:
It is the Golden Age of Piracy. Renegade captains command the most powerful weapons on Earth: warships. You are a pirate captain who has refused the king’s pardon and sailed from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, an untamed frontier full of lavish riches. However, these waters are also a battleground where far-reaching colonial empires, powerful trading corporations, and ruthless pirate gangs clash. In order to survive, you will have to build a lethal fleet, prey upon lucrative trade routes, and ally with other pirates in your endless struggle for supremacy.
Skull and Bones Features
- Dominate a Dangerous Open Ocean: A shared open world that reacts as you plunder rich trade routes
- Customize Your Pirate Experience: Choose your captain, recruit your crew and build deadly ships
- Naval Combat Redefined: Use your weapons, spyglass and even the wind to stalk and destroy your prey
- Play Solo or Co-Op: Raid the Hunting Grounds alone or group with other players to hunt larger prey
- Explosive Multiplayer: Enter the Disputed Waters and fight for supremacy in a variety of game modes
Skull and Bones will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in Fall 2018, but Ubisoft is currently accepting applications for an upcoming Closed Beta at the game’s official website. Also, be sure to check out an additional Gameplay Trailer after the break. (more…)
