Visceral’s Star Wars game is “along the same lines” as Star Wars 1313

Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilms cruelly cut down Star Wars 1313, a mature-themed action-adventure game slated to star Boba Fett, before it had a chance to shine. But its possible the spirit of that game will live on in Visceral’s upcoming Star Wars game.

The man of many voices, Nolan North, attended MetroCon in Tampa, Floria two weeks ago and spilled a few details about the game. One of his panels (which was recorded and uploaded to YouTube) quickly veered into questions about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and any story changes that may have occurred after Creative Director Amy Hennig left to join Visceral. North couldn’t go into details about that, but he did talk up Hennig’s contribution to her new home:

“If you’re a big fan of Amy Hennig and her style of story, she’s gone to EA and is going to reboot a brand new Star Wars franchise in the style of Uncharted. I happen to know a lot about it and it’s going to be awesome.”

Star Wars 1313 was famously reminiscent of the Uncharted franchise and an audience member even asked, “Is it Star Wars 1313?” North chuckled and replied, “it’s different,” but added, “it’s along the same lines.”

Visceral has yet to officially discuss their Star Wars game, but we know it’ll be an open-world title and will likely star Han Solo. Han Solo may not be a ruthless bounty hunter, but he was a scoundrel and a smuggler in his younger days, and a game starring the character could definitely be considered “along the same lines” as Star Wars 1313.

Is Visceral working on a Star Wars: Han Solo game? Probably…

starwars-logo

In the past few weeks, Electronic Arts and DICE have been very forthcoming about their plans for Star Wars: Battlefront, which will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 17. The same can’t be said for the Star Wars game in development at Visceral Games… it’s been shrouded in mystery ever since the agreement between EA and Lucasfilm was announced. Or has it?

Game Informer has collected a number of cryptic social media posts from Visceral’s staff that all have a common theme… Han Solo. Pictures of the pilot frozen in carbonite, a Star Wars-themed pirate flag, and more than a few references to the Millennium Falcon are pretty suspicious, to say the least.

Even though Han is one of the trilogy’s most important characters, he is rarely a playable character in any of the dozens of Star Wars games that have been released over the years. OK, there was that one Xbox 360 game from a few years ago, but it is not the game you’re looking for.

So, are these teasers proof that Visceral is working on a Han Solo game? Maybe… or maybe not. I would put my money on yes, but we’ll have to wait for an official announcement from EA to know for sure.

I’m solo, I’m Han Solo. I’m Han Solo, I’m Han Solo, Solo. Yeah, I’m feelin’ good tonight.

Star Wars EU wiped clean; All future movies, books, games to be part of one continuity

We all expected it, but Lucasfilm made it official yesterday by doing away with the existing Star Wars Expanded Universe in preparation for Episode VII. Originally infamous for the multiple levels of canonicity it imposed on the franchise, going forward, every Star Wars project produced by Lucasfilm (including all movies, games, and books) will hold an equal place in franchise’s continuity. This includes both of EA’s in-production games: DICE LA’s Star Wars: Battlefront and Visceral’s “open world” game.

“We have an unprecedented slate of new Star Wars entertainment on the horizon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s President. “We’re set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before.”

In addition to the six movies, two previous Star Wars television productions will remain valid in the new continuity: The Clone Wars and the upcoming Rebels. But that doesn’t mean that your favorite Star Wars novels will fall into the Holiday Special hole. Many of the books, including the Thrawn Trilogy, will be republished under the “Legends” banner. However, Lucasfilm was quick to point out that “the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded.” New writers may use previously published EU material in the new continuity, with the approval of the new Lucasfilm Story Group, of course.

And about those future books… io9 has revealed that the first Star Wars book in the new continuity will be September’s A New Dawn, which will serve as a prequel to Rebels. It will be followed by Tarkin on November 11, and Heir to the Jedi and Lords of the Sith in early 2015.

So say farewell to the characters from all the fantastic Star Wars games over the years. Shadows of the Empire, Jedi Knight, Rogue Squadron, Knights of the Old Republic, The Force Unleashed, and many others… they may be gone, but they’ll all live on in our memory banks.

EA hires former Uncharted dev Amy Hennig to lead Visceral’s Star Wars project

starwars-logo

Amy Hennig stepped down from her position as the Creative Director on Uncharted 4 at Naughty Dog a few weeks ago. Today, we learned where she’ll land. In a post on EA’s “The Beat” blog, the megapublisher has revealed she has been hired by Visceral Games to become Creative Director of their in-development Star Wars project. Steve Papoutsis, Visceral’s General Manager, is very pleased with the hiring of Hennig:

Amy has long been recognized as one of our industry’s top visionaries, and is coming off an amazing run as the Writer and Creative Director of the Uncharted franchise. But her contributions go beyond the games she helped create at Naughty Dog and at Crystal Dynamics, where we worked together many years ago. As both a colleague and friend, I’ve always admired her approach to creative development – focusing on nailing down the soul of a game first, and then making sure the writing, the gameplay, the design and the art comes together to form a unified, interactive experience for the player. This fits in perfectly with what we’re trying to do here at Visceral and Amy’s going to help us continue in our pursuit to make the most thrilling, immersive games in the world.

The details of Visceral’s Star Wars project are still very much under wraps. It’s expected to be an open-world game, but it may be a long time before we find out what Hennig will bring to the title.

It looks like EA Canada is assisting Visceral on an “open-world” Star Wars game

starwars-logo

It’s no secret that EA Games owns the exclusive license to publish Star Wars games. Whether or not this is a good thing remains to be seen. The Worst Company in America two years running now, EA’s stock has been on a serious decline, as far as gamers are concerned. Maybe a strong franchise like Star Wars is exactly what EA needs to boost sales and prove to people that they can get the job done. With these things in mind, it should put into perspective just how important EA’s newest project, an “open world Star Wars game,” is.

We know that EA has farmed out two Star Wars titles to DICE LA (Star Wars: Battlefront) and Visceral Games (an untitled and rather mysterious Star Wars game). Despite three decades of Star Wars games, gamers have never gotten their hands on an open-world title. With the great success of open world titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, there’s little doubt that such a title could work if done properly. Open world titles are extremely ambitious in and of themselves, but Star Wars titles bring in a whole other list of challenges, the first and foremost of which is making the game feel like a Star Wars game. You can slap the name Star Wars on anything, but if players don’t feel immersed in a world of battling political philosophies, opposing Force powers, and corrupt Hutt lords, then it’s not really a Star Wars game.

To that end, it looks like EA has expanded the scope of Visceral’s Star Wars title and brought EA Canada aboard to help with development duties. Scanning job postings released by EA Canada, it looks like this “open world Star Wars game” is the same one currently in the works at Visceral. So two world class developers… one great license… this can’t fail, right? Right?

EA’s Star Wars deal doesn’t include movie tie-in games

starwars-logo

Electronic Arts wasted no time in tasking top men (“TOP. MEN.”) from DICE LA and Visceral to create two games in the Star Wars universe after signing a deal with Disney earlier this year. DICE LA is hard at work on a reboot of Star Wars: Battlefront while the subject of Visceral’s project is still a mystery. But now we know what it won’t be about.

Speaking at the UBS Global Technology Conference earlier this week, Blake Jorgensen, EA’s CFO, has confirmed that the publisher has no plans to release any games based on the upcoming Star Wars movies such as 2015’s Episode VII.

“We’ve done movie games over the years and we wanted to make sure that we weren’t doing a movie game, i.e., game based on the movie,” Jorgensen said.

He continued: “We have [a] team in DICE building some early stages of various games and building them in Frostbite, so it will be a very exciting gameplay and you’ll hear more about it in the years to come. And so, we’re excited and we think that it will be a great 2015 and 2016 when we’ll start to see the emergence of possibly the Star Wars titles along with the Star Wars movies that will start to come out in late calendar 2015 or fiscal 2016.”

Jorgensen also confirmed that EA’s deal with Disney will last for ten years and will include “games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms.”

We’ll get a “first look” at EA’s Star Wars games at E3 2013

starwars-logo

Electronic Arts has a lot planned for this year’s E3 Expo. In addition to a more expansive look at Battlefield 4, the public debut of Need For Speed Rivals, and a rundown of their EA Sports slate, the megapublisher will give gamers a “first look” at their plans for the Star Wars series.

If you recall, Visceral Games is working on one title in the Star Wars universe while DICE’s new Los Angeles team is working on another.

All of this news will be delivered during “The Download,” EA’s 2013 E3 Press Conference. “The Download” is scheduled for Monday, June 10 at 4:00 PM (Eastern Time) and you’ll be able to watch on Spike TV or online at EA.com/e3.

EA has no plans to publish a Star Wars game this year

starwars-logo

Electronic Arts held their quarterly financial briefing yesterday and the publisher revealed that it has no plans to release a Star Wars game in 2013. EA and Disney announced the Star Wars deal on Monday, confirming suspicions that Disney would look outside their Disney Interactive label to create future Star Wars games after closing LucasArts.

Blake Jorgensen, EA’s Chief Financial Officer, announced that they won’t be releasing a Star Wars game during the company’s 2014 fiscal year (which runs from April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014). So the absolute earliest a new Star Wars game could be released is April 2014. Jorgensen didn’t want to pin down a release date, but EA President Frank Gibeau was able to reveal that both DICE and Visceral will be using the Frostbite 3 engine to create the next chapter in the Star Wars video game saga.

While it went unsaid, this news also likely spells the end for Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault.
