Warp Zoned’s 2018 Golden Pixel Awards: Our Favorite Games From Last Year
2018 was an absolutely astounding year for video games, and while we might not have gotten the chance to play everything we wanted, the Warp Zoned staff was definitely able to add a big batch of new games to our “Favorites” pile.
This year’s selection of standout titles offered something for everybody… Insomniac’s Spider-Man let us soar above Manhattan as the webslinger like never before… The mountainous milieu of Matt Thorson’s Celeste challenged our thumbs and our hearts… Capcom’s Mega Man 11 brought the Blue Bomber back for the first time in almost a decade… And those three games were just the tip of the iceberg.
The Golden Pixel Awards aren’t the “Best Games” from 2018, but these are the titles we plan to return to again and again in 2019 (and beyond). We hope you enjoy them as much as we did. (more…)

New Retail Releases: Starlink: Battle For Atlas, Soul Calibur VI, Lego DC Super-Villains, More
Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally moseying up to its release date, so game publishers are rushing to launch their latest projects ahead of the Wild West prequel. And that means several big releases will make their way onto store shelves this week, including new games from Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, WB Games, and 2K Games.
Ubisoft will attempt to revive the toys-to-life genre with Starlink: Battle For Atlas for the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Players can customize the space shooter by purchasing additional Starship Packs and Weapon Packs, and Switch owners will even be able to pilot an Arwing from Star Fox right out of the box.
Several other long-running franchises will also receive new entries this week, including Bandai Namco’s one-on-one fighter Soul Calibur VI (PS4, Xbox One, and download-only on the PC) and WB Games’s family-friendly action title Lego DC Super-Villains (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and download-only on the PC). Saber Interactive is also charging the hoop for their second arcade-style basketball game, teaming up with 2K Games for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 (PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and download-only on the PC).
Finally this week, Dark Souls Remastered will finally make its way to the Switch, and Bandai Namco will also bundle together all three games in the Dark Souls Trilogy for the PS4 and Xbox One. For Honor: Marching Fire Edition from Ubisoft will also bundle together the original game and a big batch of new content for the PS4 and Xbox One.

The Games of October 2018
The Fall is in full swing here in Warp Zoned’s northerly headquarters, and that means Apple Cider, Pumpkin Spice, a lot of talk about the leaves, and plenty of new video games. There are so many games set to launch this month, but one stands out head and shoulders above all the rest… I’m talking, of course, about Just Dance 2019.
Nah, it’s actually Rockstar’s latest magnum opus, Red Dead Redemption 2. You know you’re doing something right when you’re a developer with multiple magnum opuses (opusii?). And that is definitely the case with Rockstar and their newest trip back to the American West.

Play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (and 8 other Switch games) at Nintendo’s PAX West 2018 booth
Nintendo is putting most of their eggs in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-shaped basket this Fall, though the consolemaker is also planning to release a few other big titles for the Switch before the end of the year. But if you’re attending PAX West later this week, don’t worry, they’ll have playable demos of all of them on the show floor, along with several eagerly-anticipated third-party games.
In addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, fans will be able to stop by Nintendo’s booth (#1939) to try out Super Mario Party, Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu!, and Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee!. Playable demos for Ubisoft’s Starlink: Battle For Atlas, Bandai Namco’s Dragon Ball FighterZ, Blizzard’s Diablo III: Eternal Collection, Grasshopper Manufacture’s No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again, and NIS America’s SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy will also be available.
“Many of our biggest fans descend on Seattle every year to celebrate video games at PAX West,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “It’s the perfect venue for us to interact directly with our fans with fun activities and engaging hands-on demos with some of our upcoming games.”

Ubisoft adds Star Fox to the Switch version of spaceship-builder Starlink: Battle For Atlas
I’ve been curious about Starlink: Battle For Atlas ever since it was announced at last year’s E3. I love collectibles (I have several Amiibo), so the idea of building your own spaceship as a model seemed like all kinds of fun.
But then one of the characters from the game put out a distress call for help in the E3 2018 Trailer… and a familiar sound replied.
No?
NO?
YES!
Star Fox and his team will join the dog fight in the Switch version of Starlink, and players will get to see the Arwing barrel rolling and blasting like it was born to. It’s not a true Star Fox game, but I don’t really care. For me, this was the biggest surprise of E3, and it means that I can now explore a new galaxy with a familiar friend.
If you’re unfamiliar with Starlink, here’s how Ubisoft tried to explain it:
The modular toys and dynamic combat mechanics in Starlink: Battle For Atlas let players explore multiple ways to achieve objectives and approach any obstacle or enemy, driven by their own imagination and creativity. Alongside the innovative new way to play, Starlink: Battle For Atlas offers open-world gameplay, spanning a full star system that players can explore with total freedom.
Built from the ground up in the Snowdrop engine, the game allows seamless travel through and around the exotic alien worlds of the Atlas Star System, teeming with life and unique challenges across seven different planets. Players’ actions and choices will impact their journey and no two player experiences will be alike. Enemies will react and fight back intelligently – taking over the star system if the player does nothing to stop them. The fate of Atlas rests in your hands.
