Capcom confirms digital upgrade and retail release dates for Ultra Street Fighter IV

ultrastreetfighteriv-header

After almost a year of teasing, Capcom has officially announced release dates for the digital upgrade and retail versions of Ultra Street Fighter IV.

If you already own Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition on the PS3 you’ll be able to download the Ultra update on June 3. Xbox 360 owners of either game will be able to purchase the upgrade on June 4 (and remember, SSF4: Arcade Edition is one of June’s free Games With Gold). The update has been priced at $14.99 on both platforms.

If you’d prefer to purchase a retail copy of Ultra Street Fighter IV, you’ll have to wait until August. Capcom will release a retail disc version (priced at $39.99) for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on August 5. They’ll follow that up with the Steam release (priced at $29.99) of Ultra Street Fighter IV on August 8. The digital upgrade for Super Street Fighter IV and Arcade Edition players on the PC will be available on the same day.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will add five new fighters and a wide variety of balance tweaks to the game. Presumably, it’s the final update to Street Fighter IV, but you never know with Capcom.

Decapre is the secret fifth new fighter in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Capcom has finally revealed the secret fifth new character for Ultra Street Fighter IV and it’s… drum roll… Decapre! Wait… who?

According to the Street Fighter Wiki, Decapre is a Doll. The Dolls are a cadre of brainwashed teenage girls who work for M. Bison as assassins and bodyguards. The Dolls have played a part in Street Fighter’s backstory for years as Cammy is a former Doll who broke free of the mind control. Due to their similar pasts, Decapre closely resembles an “Evil Cammy” in much the same way that Akuma is considered by many to be an “Evil Ryu.”

I’ll be honest, I was expecting something a bit more than “Evil Cammy” after how secretive Capcom has been about Ultra Street Fighter IV’s fifth addition.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available as a DLC upgrade for Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition in June with a standalone retail disc/PC download to follow in August.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Release Dates: Upgrade Download in June, Retail Disc in August

ultrastreetfighteriv-header

Capcom has continued to narrow the release window for Ultra Street Fighter IV. To ensure everyone has enough time to practice ahead of Evo 2014, the publisher plans to release the PS3 and Xbox 360 upgrade download in early June. The update has been priced at $14.99 (€14.99) and can be applied to Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

If you’d prefer a boxed copy of the game, the retail disc version of Ultra Street Fighter IV for the PS3 and Xbox 360 will be released in August. The retail edition will be priced at $39.99 (€39.99).

Finally, PC players that want to join the fight will also have to wait until August as both the upgrade download ($14.99/€14.99) and full-game download ($29.99/€29.99) will be released at the same time.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will also be available in limited quantities as an arcade cabinet and Capcom has more details about arcade edition location tests at the Capcom-Unity blog.

Ultra Street Fighter IV will be released in May or June next year

ultrastreetfighteriv-header

Capcom is still keeping quiet on when Ultra Street Fighter IV will be released, but they’ve narrowed the window somewhat.

According to a post on the Capcom-Unity blog, the publisher has revealed that the arcade edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available in April 2014. The PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 edition will be released shortly after that, but “before EVO [2014].” Since the 2014 Evolution World Finals are set to begin on July 11, we can assume that the home release of Ultra Street Fighter IV will be available sometime in May or June.

Capcom producer says Street Fighter V is likely at least five years away

capcomlogo

Capcom plans to release the next major revision to Street Fighter IV update, Ultra Street Fighter IV, in early 2014. As the third update, Ultra follows in the footsteps of 2010’s Super Street Fighter IV and 2011’s Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. 1997’s Street Fighter III only received two updates, so fans have begun asking the question, “When are we going to get Street Fighter V?”

Sadly, it may be quite a while before Capcom learns to count to five. Speaking to VG247, Capcom’s Tomoaki Ayano revealed that the next numbered game in the series may not be released until the end of the decade:

“Game development is a long and arduous process,” he continued. “If you look at the history of the series, it took six years to go from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter III, and nine years to go from Street Fighter III to Street Fighter IV. Purely based on that it would probably take us until the year 2018 before Street Fighter V comes out. So I hope everyone will play Ultra Street Fighter IV for a long time.”

So… Street Fighter V for the PS5 and Xbox OneTwo confirmed!

Ultra Street Fighter IV adds five characters in early 2014

Capcom just can’t stop. During this weekend’s Evo 2013 event, the publisher announced that the latest Street Fighter IV update, Ultra Street Fighter IV, will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in early 2014.

If you already own Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, the update will be available as a DLC expansion priced at $14.99. Capcom also plans to sell the game as a disc-based retail release with a $39.99 price tag.

So what does Ultra Street Fighter IV add to the franchise? Aside from the usual round of balance tweaks, the game will add several new arenas and five new characters. Three (Rolento, Hugo, and Poison) made their video game debuts in the Final Fight franchise, while a fourth (Elena) was originally found in Street Fighter III. The fifth character is currently a mystery.

I don’t know why Capcom didn’t go with the name “Super Duper Street Fighter IV” for this update. After all, they already had the logo.

4/1: Capcom will NOT release Super Duper Street Fighter IV

superduperstreetfighterAfter Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, it’s not hard to believe that Capcom would release one more update to the popular fighting game. And guess what? According to the Capcom-Unity blog, it’s Super Duper:

Introducing the Duper Meter. This will sit below the Super Meter and be easily identifiable with it’s Yellow color. With the Duper meter, Super moves can now take on the properties of EX Moves after their activation or be used to strengthen EX moves in general. The Duper Meter also builds 1.5 times faster than the normal Super Meter. Now players will get even more options to select from as we know Street Fighter 4 players love option selecting.

Super Duper Street Fighter IV won’t be coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 anytime soon because it’s an April Fool’s Day joke.

Gag Reflex: Previous games in the Street Fighter series have carried run-on titles like Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike: Fight For the Future, so “Super Duper” isn’t that much of a stretch. You probably won’t stumble across a more believable hoax all day.
