F.A.N.G. is the final Street Fighter V character; Capcom also announces 2016 Season Pass
Capcom had one last Street Fighter V character to announce before the game’s February 16 launch, and they did it today at the 2015 PlayStation Experience. F.A.N.G. is a gangly behatted weirdo that’s the new second-in-command of Shadaloo. He’s also got a way with toxins and flings poisonous gas around the arena like your old college roommate:
About F.A.N.G.
F.A.N.G. is an assassin whose unique poison attacks leave him second only to M. Bison himself! Besides overseeing Shadaloo’s operations, his true passion comes from the evil experiments conducted within Shadaloo’s research facilities. F.A.N.G. introduces a series first mechanic; poison. Whenever his poison attacks connect, they continuously deal damage to the opponent’s life bar until he gets hit or the poison runs its course. F.A.N.G.’s sinister long range attacks and slippery movements, paired with his ability to poison, will leave his opponents feeling ill.V-Skill: Nishodoku
F.A.N.G. sends out a slow moving poison-filled projectile. If it makes contact with the opponent, it will begin to slowly deal damage.V-Trigger: Dokunomu
The ultimate defense, F.A.N.G. emits a poisonous cloud around his body that constantly deals damage to the opponent as long as they’re near him.
The Capcom-Unity blog also confirmed that six characters will be added to Street Fighter V over the course of 2016: Alex, Guile, Balrog, Ibuki, Juri, and Urien. A Season Pass (priced at $29.99 and available now) will include access to all six characters, as well as a premium costume for each. Players can also opt to purchase “Zenny” or earn “Fight Money” by completing challenges to gain access to the new characters. It’s currently unknown exactly how players will earn “Fight Money” and how much they’ll need to unlock these characters for free.
Capcom will also release a GameStop-exclusive Street Fighter V Collector’s Edition in February
Fans of the Street Fighter franchise are a special breed. Capcom and GameStop are hoping to tap into that strain of fanaticism with an absolutely massive Street Fighter V Collector’s Edition, which will be available in February.
Retailing for $347.97 (though currently discounted to $329.98), the Collector’s Edition will include a Street Fighter V game disc, a 48-page Art Book, a Soundtrack Sampler, a Chun-Li Arcade FightStick, and a 10-inch statue of Ryu. I’m not usually one to go gaga over statues, but I have to admit, this one looks pretty sharp. The package will also include a three-month subscription to PlayStation Plus, a one-month subscription to the Capcom Fighter Twitch channel, and a downloadable sample of Udon’s Street Fighter comic.
The Street Fighter V Collector’s Edition will be available exclusively for the PS4 through GameStop.com on February 16, 2016. The game will also be released for the PC in a standard edition on the same day.
Capcom plans to support Street Fighter V for five years
Capcom supported Street Fighter IV for roughly six years when the final bell rang. Three major updates (and several smaller ones) were released for the fighting game, including Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, and last year’s Ultra Street Fighter IV.
Though Street Fighter V is still a few months out, the publisher has already confirmed that its update schedule will look a little different. Rather than launch a major “Super” or “Ultra” update every year or two, Capcom will instead offer a single new character for the game roughly every two months, with six planned for release next year. And if all goes according to plan, this schedule will be in place for five years, ultimately allowing the game’s roster to grow from 16 to nearly 50.
Franchise Producer Yoshinori Ono recently sat down with Eurogamer and laid it all out:
Eurogamer: Street Fighter IV ended up with 44 characters, you’ve got 16 in V with six coming in the first year. My maths is terrible so I can’t figure out how long it’d take you to get to 44…. How long will you support it for?
Ono: A lot of it will depend on once the game’s out in the wild, and if the model we make comes to fruition and I can be proven right about it being the right choice. Simple maths suggests it’d take five years to get to the roster of Street Fighter 4, and we want to keep the game going for that amount of time. We want to support it as long as we can, we honestly will have to see – we don’t know anymore than anyone else does how it’s going to turn out next February, once we do this completely new way of doing things.
Street Fighter V will be released for the PC and PS4 on February 16, 2016.
Capcom shows off Street Fighter V’s Tutorial Mode in new trailer
It can be hard for new players to break into the Street Fighter franchise nowadays… especially when playing online against dedicated fighting game fanatics. But Capcom wants to change this perception with Street Fighter V and have announced plans to add a Tutorial Mode to the game. The first three minutes of the Tutorial Mode have been embedded above, giving players their first look at a sparring session between Ryu and Ken. The still panels delve into the pair’s backstory, and the Capcom-Unity blog has promised this is “just a sample of things to come.”
Street Fighter V will be available for the PC and PS4 on February 16.
Dhalsim joins Street Fighter V, which will officially launch on February 16, 2016
Dhalsim was my guy back in the Street Fighter II days, so it’s great to see that Capcom has added the yoga master to next year’s Street Fighter V. The publisher also announced that we can stop saying “next year” and instead use the much more accurate “February 16,” which is when Street Fighter V will be available for the PC and PS4.
If you’re stretching yourself in knots to learn more about Dhalsim, don’t worry, the Capcom-Unityy blog recently put together this complete report about the character’s stylish new moves:
About Dhalsim
Debuting in Street Fighter II, Dhalsim’s yoga fighting style means that using his long range limbs and slow projectiles will frustrate even the most aggressive of his World Warrior opponents. Although he’s a pacifist, Dhalsim is always saving others whether it’s helping to raise money for the poor or destroying dams that are keeping water from reaching his village.V-Skill: Yoga Float
Upon activation Dhalsim hops into the air and floats for a few seconds. During this time, all airborne attacks and specials are accessible. This can also be activated in the air.V-Trigger: Yoga Burner
Dhalsim shoots out a stream of flames that stays on the screen on the floor for an extended period of time. If the opponent stands in the flames, they will slowly lose life in the form of recoverable damage. Once they step out of the flames, their life will begin to recover.
Besides revealing a release date and Dhalsim, Capcom also confirmed that six downloadable characters will be available for Street Fighter V by the end of next year. A new character will appear roughly every two months and all of them will be obtainable for free with Fight Money, Street Fighter V’s in-game currency. Players will be able to earn Fight Money by completing daily challenges (land X number of Hadokens, land X number of anti-air attacks, etc) or by leveling up characters. Of course, new characters can also be purchased with real money too.
Capcom will include 16 characters in Street Fighter V when it’s released early next year, so expect to learn more about the final one in the very near future.
Laura steals Blanka’s thunder as the latest addition to Street Fighter V
Back in July, Executive Producer Yoshinori Ono unveiled a Brazilian stage for Street Fighter V and confirmed that a character announcement to go along with this locale would be announced at the 2015 Brasil Game Show. At the time, we all assumed Ono was referring to Blanka… especially since he made the announcement while surrounded by Blanka dolls. But it looks like Ono pulled a fast one as the game’s Brazilian combatant is actually a new character known as Laura. But don’t worry, she’s still got lightning powers.
Laura is also a master of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, who uses her speed and strength as an expert grappler. The Capcom-Unity blog went into a bit more detail about her skillset:
About Laura
Joining the series from her homeland in Brazil, Laura Matsuda is a Jiu-Jitsu specialist, a first for the Street Fighter series. Continuing the tradition of the famed Matsuda fighting style, Laura is constantly looking for strong opponents around the world to defeat, in an effort to spread the Matsuda Jiu-Jitsu’s name and prestige. Laura’s methodical grapple technique comes equipped with a stunning “Thunder Clap” projectile that zaps opponents and leaves them questioning if they should get in close, or keep their distance. Using a variety of quick moving attacks and effective command grabs, Laura will become a favorite for players who enjoy “up close and personal” mind games.V-Skill: Linear Movement
By holding either back or forward and pressing Medium Punch + Medium Kick, Laura moves in the corresponding direction, getting her in and out of the opponent’s range at will. If no direction is held during the V-Skill activation, she will perform an overhead kick.V-Trigger: Spark Show
Laura gets ready to zap the competition when she activates Spark Show. During her electrifying state, Laura’s Thunder Clap projectile flies further, she deals more stun on her attacks and grabs, and moves around further during her Linear Movements.
Laura will be playable as part of a new Street Fighter V that’ll be available all weekend long at the Brasil Game Show in Sao Paulo and New York Comic-Con in New York City. Street Fighter V will be released for the PC and PS4 in Spring 2016.
NY Comic-Con 2015 attendees will get to play Capcom’s Umbrella Corps, Street Fighter V, Resident Evil 0, Mega Man Legacy Collection
Capcom has announced that they will offer four playable demos at their New York Comic-Con booth (#1420) this weekend.
NYCC attendees will be the first folks in North America to get a chance to try out Umbrella Corps, a Resident Evil-themed team shooter that was first revealed at last month’s Tokyo Game Show. And speaking of Capcom’s undead franchise, a demo of Resident Evil 0 will also be available. Both games are scheduled to be released early next year.
If you’re looking for new announcements, look no further than Street Fighter V. Capcom will offer a playable demo of the fighting game on the show floor and the publisher is strongly hinting that Executive Producer Yoshinori Ono will reveal another new challenger over the weekend. Finally, the currently-available Mega Man Legacy Collection will also be available to try out in all its retro glory.
Capcom will also host a pair of panels this weekend including a “World of Capcom” panel on Thursday, October 8 and a Street Fighter V panel on Saturday, October 10.
More details on all four playable demos can be found after the break. (more…)
Zangief is a beast in his Street Fighter V reveal trailer
Everyone’s favorite bear wrestler, Zangief, has piledrived his way into Street Fighter V. The Russian giant is the 13th character to be added to the game, which still leaves three empty character slots (though Blanka will likely fill one next week).
In addition to the Reveal Trailer embedded above, a few more details about Zangief were confirmed by the Capcom-Unity blog… like the fact that Zangief can harm his opponents just by flexing! Here’s what else we’ve learned about Zangief, and if you somehow find yourself in Moscow this weekend, a Street Fighter V demo featuring the big Russian will be available on the show floor at the IgroMir expo:
About Zangief
When it comes to raw strength, not many of the World Warriors can compete with Zangief. Training day and night, he believes that the only way to victory is to have a body complete with perfect muscles. Due to his intense training, which includes wrestling bears, Zangief is able to lift even the heaviest opponents with ease! In Street Fighter V, Zangief shows off the results of his training through his newfound V-Skill (Iron Muscle) and V-Trigger (Cyclone Lariat). But, these are just the tip of the iceberg, as Zangief has many more new tactics in store for any opponent that challenges him and his raw power.V-Skill: Iron Muscle
Zangief shows the true power of his body when he activates Iron Muscle. During Iron Muscle, Zangief can absorb one attack, which leaves him with recoverable health. If players hold down Medium Punch and Medium Kick and then press a direction on the joystick, Zangief will begin to slowly close in on the opponent. Upon release from the walk, Zangief flexes his muscles and hits the opponent if close enough.V-Trigger: Cyclone Lariat
Zangief lives up to his name “The Red Cyclone” as he spins with high speed and velocity, pulling the opponent in close. If the player taps the V-Trigger activation buttons, Zangief will quickly spin and pull in the opponent. If the player holds the V-Trigger activation buttons, Zangief will continue to spin and hit the opponent multiple times.
Street Fighter V will be released for the PC and PS4 in Spring 2015.
