Game Critics Awards panel declares Fallout 4 the “Best of Show” at E3 2015
The Game Critics Awards, a panel comprised of journalists from 38 different publications, have handed out their 2015 “Best of E3” honors and Bethesda’s Fallout 4 took home the big prize… which should come as a surprise to pretty much no one. In addition to being named “Best of Show,” Fallout 4 was also awarded “Best PC Game” and “Best Role Playing Game.”
However, Fallout 4 couldn’t win all the awards, and its quantity was actually matched by Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which collected three awards of its own. Among the traditional awards, Nathan Drake’s next adventure won “Best Console Game” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.” But it was also selected for a “Special Commendation For Graphics” award by the Game Critics Awards panel.
Star Wars: Battlefront was the only other multi-award winner, taking home “Best Action Game” and “Best Online Multiplayer.” More interestingly, this year’s Best of E3 awards included two repeat winners… Super Mario Maker for “Best Family/Social Game” and No Man’s Sky for “Best Independent Game.”
A full list of this year’s winners can be found after the break. (more…)
Even Nintendo can’t get their hands on every Amiibo figure for their Comic-Con 2015 booth
Are you planning to pay a visit to the San Diego Comic-Con next weekend? If so, you should stop by the Nintendo booth (#235) to gaze at a display of almost every Amiibo figure in existence. I say “almost” every figure because Nintendo themselves said they won’t be able to procure all of them in time for the convention. It makes you wonder, exactly how rare are some of these Amiibo figures when the company that makes them can’t find some of them?
If you’re interested in doing more than staring at Amiibo figures you can never own, Nintendo also plans to have a full slate of playable games at their Nintendo Gaming Lounge, which will be located at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina during this year’s Comic-Con. Located directly adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center, the Nintendo Gaming Lounge will feature many of the same demos that Nintendo brought to this year’s E3 Expo:
Playable Wii U Games
- Super Mario Maker
- Yoshi’s Woolly World
- Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
- Splatoon
- Skylanders SuperChargers (Activision)
Playable 3DS Games
- Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash
- The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes
- Little Battlers Experience
- Yo-Kai Watch
Nintendo will also hold a number of tournaments at the Nintendo Gaming Lounge. So if you’ve ever wanted to show the world your prowess at Splatoon, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, Pokemon: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, and the unreleased Little Battlers Experience, you can. More details on the tournaments, including a full schedule, can be found at Nintendo’s Comic-Con page.
Nintendo will build 100 levels for Super Mario Maker… more than any previous Mario game
UPDATE: It looks like Super Mario Maker won’t ship with 100 pre-built levels on the disc. Instead, 60 courses will be available when you first boot up the game, which is still a pretty impressive number.
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Last week, we learned that Super Mario Maker would ship with a number of pre-built levels, including the four featured during the finals of the 2015 Nintendo World Championships. But those four are apparently just the beginning for the Wii U game (or possibly the end, considering how difficult they were).
It’s been removed in the interim, but yesterday, Super Mario Maker’s page on Nintendo UK included a new bullet point promising the game would ship with 100 pre-made levels. Specifically, the site stated, “There are also 100 courses included that you can play without an internet connection.” Not only is that a very generous number, but the inclusion of 100 courses would actually make Super Mario Maker the biggest Mario game of all time. As you can see from this chart, every other entry in the side-scrolling series pales in comparison:
Title | Number of Levels |
Super Mario Bros. | 32 |
Super Mario Bros. 2 | 20 |
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels | 52 |
Super Mario Bros. 3 | 90 |
Super Mario World | 72 |
New Super Mario Bros. | 80 |
New Super Mario Bros. Wii | 77 |
New Super Mario Bros. 2 | 92 |
New Super Mario Bros. U | 73 |
It may not have a World Map, but Super Mario Maker is clearly no mere level editor. And when you add in all the ridiculously creative courses that will surely be created after the game’s September 11 launch, it might be the last Mario side-scroller we’ll ever need.
Super Mario Maker will ship with pre-made courses including the four from NWC 2015
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka stopped by the Nintendo Treehouse Live set yesterday to talk about Super Mario Maker and the two legendary developers dropped a few big Bob-Ombs.
First, they said that players won’t be able to upload every course they create. Don’t worry, Nintendo isn’t putting any restrictions on what kinds of courses you can create in Super Mario Maker. But they are requiring that you can beat your own course before you upload it for the world. “It’s only fair,” said Tezuka.
But the big news is that the four ridiculously insane courses created for the 2015 Nintendo World Championships, along with other pre-built courses, will be included in Super Mario Maker:

Super Mario Maker will be released for the Wii U on September 11.
Another Super Mario Maker trailer reveals September 11 release date and Amiibo support
Nintendo already gave us an amazing look at what’s possible in Super Mario Maker during the final round of this year’s Nintendo World Championships. But that didn’t stop them from releasing another trailer for the Wii U game, which showcases a ton of even crazier Mario moments.
For example, towards the end of the trailer, you see a a person tapping a Link Amiibo figure. Rather than give Mario a Link costume or something silly like that, the Amiibo literally drops Link into the game. These “Mystery Mushroom” characters can be unlocked for a number of other Amiibo figures including Kirby and Wii Fit Trainer. But don’t worry, all of the characters will be available without Amiibo assistance if you complete their corresponding “100 Mario Challenge” in the game.
An additional pair of 30th Anniversary Amiibo figures will be available alongside the game. Depicting Mario in all his pixelated glory, the Classic Mario and Modern Mario figures (sold separately) will unlock a Big Mushroom to allow in-game Mario to go stomping through a level as an unstoppable giant.
Finally, each copy of the game will include a 100-page book with tips and tricks “that illustrate the boundless possibilities” in the game. All courses created in the game will be shareable online, and I can’t wait to see what people come up with when Super Mario Maker is released exclusively for the Wii U on September 11.
Nintendo World Championships crowns a winner with four insane Super Mario Maker courses… see them here
Like the finale of The Wizard, the winner of the 2015 Nintendo World Championships was decided by the competitors going head-to-head in an unreleased Super Mario game. While Super Mario Bros. 3 shocked us all in 1989, the courses designed by staff members from the Nintendo Treehouse for John “John Numbers” Goldberg and Cosmo Wright in Super Mario Maker (it’s not just “Mario Maker” anymore) are just INSANE (note the bold and italics I used there).
Things start off slowly with a course based on World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. But things quickly take a turn for the “What?” when Cosmo runs into a wall of Fire Sweepers. And it only gets crazier when the combination Blooper/Hammer Brother/Bob-Omb shows up.
You can watch their 40-minute battle in the video embedded above, which culminates in a race through a custom New Super Mario Bros. U course. John Numbers went into the final round with a 15-second advantage and put it to good use by utterly dominating the final round.
Congratulations to John Numbers and now we begin the agonizing three-month wait for Super Mario Maker’s September launch.
Watch Shigeru Miyamoto play Mario Maker on GameCenter CX
UPDATE: The video has been removed from YouTube.
Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto recently appeared on GameCenter CX (AKA Retro Game Master) to take part in a unique challenge presented by host Shinya Arino. Nintendo gave Arino early access to Mario Maker and the host was able to create one of the most deranged Mario courses I’ve ever seen…
Cannons belch a neverending stream of Coins!
Giant Koopa Troopas pop out of Question Blocks!
Springboards bounce on top of other Springboards!
Cats and dogs! Living together! It’s mass hysteria!
Thankfully, some kind soul has posted the segment on YouTube for all the world to see. Sadly, Miyamoto admits defeat after several tries. Mario Maker will launch exclusively for the Wii U in September.
Mario Maker to launch in September as part of Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary celebration
After missing its original early 2015 release date, Nintendo has announced that Mario Maker will be released exclusively for the Wii U in September.
Mario Maker will allow players to create their own side-scrolling courses using a design template from four different Mario games: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. Best of all, switching between each style is simply a button press away.
Mario Maker’s release will be part of Nintendo’s celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the release of the original Super Mario Bros. To help get players in the mood, the publisher has launched a special 30th Anniversary website and plans to roll out various other celebratory activities throughout the year.
And if you’re interested in taking another look at Mario Maker, be sure to view the new footage from the game available at the replay of today’s Nintendo Direct presentation.
