Super Mario Odyssey takes home “Best of Gamescom” award at 2017 Gamescom expo

Hats off to Super Mario Odyssey

Nintendo’s upcoming platformer took home five Gamescom Awards this year, including 2017’s “Best of Gamescom” title, as well as “Best Nintendo Switch Game,” “Best Action Game,” “Best Family Game,” and the fan-voted “Most Wanted Consumer Award.”

The only other game to capture multiple Gamescom Awards was Destiny 2, which won “Best Social/Online Game” and “Best Multiplayer Game.”

The international jury spread out the remainder of the Gamescom Awards and chose to honor Assassin’s Creed: Origins (“Best PS4 Game”), Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (“Best Xbox One Game”), Kingdom Come: Deliverance (“Best PC Game”), and Metroid: Samus Returns (“Best Mobile Game”) in the platform categories. Another wide variety of titles (including Project CARS 2, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, and others) were big winners in the genre categories.

The complete list of nominees and winners for the 2017 Gamescom Awards can be found after the break. (more…)

Super Mario Odyssey wins “E3 2017 Best of Show” from Game Critics Awards

A marquee upcoming release for the Nintendo Switch has once again claimed “Best of Show” from the Game Critics Awards at the E3 Expo. Super Mario Odyssey took home the big prize this year, along with additional wins for “Best Console Game” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.”

Altogether, Nintendo took home top honors in six categories. Super Mario Odyssey’s trio of statues were joined by “Best Handheld Game” for Metroid: Samus Returns, and “Best Original Game” and “Best Strategy Game” for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

The editors that make up the Game Critics Awards panel made a lot of obvious picks in the rest of the categories, but they also threw in a few surprises. Strong debuts from Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (“Best Action Game”), Destiny 2 (“Best PC Game”), and Forza Motorsport 7 (“Best Racing Game”) lead to a few big wins, but I’m not anyone was expecting Arc System Works to surprise the crowd with Dragon Ball Fighter Z.

All of this year’s winners can be found after the break. (more…)

Super Mario Odyssey wows in its E3 2017 trailer

Mario has been palling around with dinosaurs ever since Yoshi made his debut in Super Mario World. But the E3 2017 trailer for Super Mario Odyssey has just revealed that everyone’s favorite plumber is going to meet a real tyrannosaurus rex in his next adventure.

This new ability is made possible in Super Mario Odyssey thanks to Cappy, Mario’s latest sidekick. Mario can throw Cappy to collect coins or knock down enemies, but the magic hat can also capture enemies and allow Mario to ride everything from the aforementioned T. Rex to a mild-mannered businessman:

Players roam massive 3D kingdoms to collect Moons to power Mario’s airship, the Odyssey. The kingdoms around the globe are filled with secrets and surprises. Mario can don a variety of costumes and interact with his environment in many creative ways, such as by driving vehicles or exploring sections as Pixel Mario. Mario’s new partner, Cappy, gives him new moves like cap throw, cap jump and capture, which provide a fresh take on the classic Super Mario formula and define this new adventure. The game offers new locales like the skyscraper-packed New Donk City.

Super Mario Odyssey will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on October 27.

Nintendo’s 2016-2017 Annual Report: Big sales for Switch, Zelda BotW, Pokemon + Fall release dates for Xenoblade 2, Mario Odyssey, more

Nintendo published their annual financial report this morning, and the company gave us our best look yet at the Switch’s retail prospects, as well as reconfirmed several 2017 releases.

The big announcement today is that Nintendo has sold 2.74 million Switch consoles around the world as of March 31. Nintendo originally predicted that they’d sell two million around Switch consoles in March, so it’s safe to say they surpassed their goal. The consolemaker expects to sell ten million more Switch consoles before the start of their next fiscal year. If this prediction proves accurate, the Switch will have matched the total sales of the Wii U in a single year.

Moving on to games, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has proven to be fairly popular, with total sales of 3.84 million copies sold (2.76 on the Switch and 1.08 on the Wii U). And don’t count out the 3DS just yet. According to Nintendo, Pokemon Sun and Moon combined to sell 15.44 million copies since they were released in November.

Nintendo closed out their report with the promise of a bright future, reiterating that all of their upcoming Switch and 3DS game are still on track to be released in 2017. Super Mario Odyssey and Fire Emblem Warriors are both still set for the Fall, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is still penciled in for a “TBA 2017” launch date.

Other titles scheduled to be released this Fall include Monster Hunter Stories, Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters, Kirby‘s next 3DS game, and Miitopia. Ever Oasis (June 23), Hey Pikmin (July 28), Splatoon 2 (July 21), and Arms (June 16) are set for this Summer.

Nintendo will most likely reveal a lot more about all of these games at this year’s E3 Expo… unless they get delayed, of course.

Nintendo Switch Presentation: Super Mario Odyssey announced and it’ll launch this Fall

Nintendo announced the next official Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey!

Super Mario Odyssey, like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, will feature a large and open sandbox world. In the trailer, we see that Mario has escaped the Mushroom Kingdom to explore some new areas… including a modern-day city.

Mario also brings with him a new hat, complete with boomerang-like abilities and a pair of eyes. Yup, the hat is alive.

Super Mario Odyssey will be released for the Switch in Fall 2017. (more…)

Nintendo NX is a console/handheld hybrid officially known as Nintendo Switch

All the rumors are true. Nintendo’s NX console is actually a console/handheld hybrid known as the Nintendo Switch.

Set to launch in March 2017, games for the Switch will be released on cartridges and players will be able to “switch” between playing on their TV with the Switch Dock or taking them on the road with a tablet-sized screen and controllers that click into place on the edges. A “Pro Controller” option will also be available, and certain games will feature a Wii-style “Remote + Nunchuk” control scheme for gaming on the go (with a kickstand for the screen). If you’d prefer a more traditional setup, the controllers can be attached to a Joy-Con Grip to better emulate a regular controller.

So what else did we learn? For starters, beloved Bethesda RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be available for the Switch. 2K’s NBA 2K17 also made an appearance in the video.

Nintendo themselves gave us a quick glimpse at a brand new Super Mario 3D game, as well as remasters of (or possibly sequels to) Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. And, of course, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was also on display.

The final launch date and price will be announced at a later date, but I’m sure we’ll learn much more about the Switch throughout the day. And there’s always the Red Dead Redemption 2 reveal to look forward to in about an hour.
