Square Enix’s The Avengers has been pushed back to September 4
Square Enix delayed the launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake earlier today, and now it looks like the same thing will happen to the next game starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Square Enix’s The Avengers is set to be an original adventure featuring Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, and other many other famed superheroes. It was originally scheduled to be released this May, but developer Crystal Dynamics has shared (via the game’s official website) that it’s been delayed. Citing a desire for additional time to “fine tune and polish” the game, The Avengers will now launch on September 4:
As fans ourselves, it’s an honor and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world. When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel’s Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come. To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.
When it launches in September, The Avengers will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
The Avengers disassemble in first trailer for Square Enix’s Avengers Project
After two and a half long years, Square Enix has finally pulled the curtain back on Marvel’s Avengers, their massive new game project starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Combining “cinematic storytelling” with single-player and cooperative gameplay for up to four players, Marvel’s Avengers is in development at Crystal Dynamics with assistance from Eidos Montreal, Crystal Northwest, and Nixxes Software.
While the first trailer for the game has a celebratory mood to start, things quickly take a dark turn…
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco — including the reveal of their own helicarrier powered by an experimental energy source. The celebration turns deadly when a catastrophic accident results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, the only hope is to reassemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Marvel’s Avengers will tell an original story set within the Marvel Universe that’ll also be updated at regular intervals after release through a series of free narrative expansions. PS4 owners can also expect to receive some type of exclusive content that will announced at a later date.
“We’ve assembled world-class developers from across the industry to bring players on an unforgettable journey,” said Ron Rosenberg, a Studio Head at Crystal Dynamics. “To ensure a truly heroic experience for all players, we’re announcing that our narrative will be delivered over multiple years, with no random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios. Every new superhero and region will be delivered to players at no additional cost if you own the core game. This is just the beginning of what we’ve got in store for our fans.”
“As superfans, working with Marvel and these characters is a dream come true and we are excited to finally reveal Marvel’s Avengers to the world,” said Scot Amos, a Studio Head at Crystal Dynamics. “This is our original take on these iconic superheroes. Leveraging our companies’ combined experience in epic action-adventure storytelling, we’re building a universe that fans will immerse themselves in for years to come.”
Marvel’s Avengers will be released for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia on May 15, 2020.
Square Enix’s Avengers Project will make its public debut at E3 2019
It’s been more than two years since Marvel and Square Enix first announced their ambitious Avengers Project. Unlike the rapidly expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (eight films have opened since the announcement, including the saga’s temporary finale, Avengers: Endgame), we haven’t learned much of anything about the game as neither the comics giant nor its developers (which include Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal) have felt the need to publicly discuss it in all that time.
Today, Marvel finally broke the silence and confirmed (via Twitter) that The Avengers Project will make its public debut ahead of this year’s E3 Expo. Representatives from Square Enix will reveal the game for the first time during their Square Enix Live presentation on June 10th.
Interestingly, the tweet also referred to the game’s title as Marvel’s Avengers:
Tune into Square Enix Live E3 2019 for the worldwide reveal of "Marvel’s Avengers"! ?️ The event begins June 10th at 6pm PT: https://t.co/SCYMbJYt8j #SquareEnixE3 #Reassemble #PlayAvengers pic.twitter.com/2fWM6ekUue

The Avengers Project (or Marvel’s Avengers, if you prefer) is believed to be in development for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game doesn’t currently have a launch date, but Square Enix has said they plan to release multiple games before the end of the year.
E3 2018 Aftermath: 9 Games That Were Missing In Action
E3 brings developers, journalists, and fans together for a celebration that is like the video game version of Christmas (or at least, it’s the day when we find out what to ask Santa for six months later).
And while there were so many projects announced, revealed, discussed, and dissected, some people still felt let down because the games they were pining to see were a no show. There were no brief teasers, no tiny morsels of information, just nothing. Radio silence from their developers.
So what were the biggest games you were disappointed you didn’t see at E3 2018? Because I have a few of my own… (more…)
Creative Director of Uncharted: Lost Legacy joins Crystal Dynamics to lead Avenger Project
Crystal Dynamics is continuing to make progress on their Avengers Project, and today the developer confirmed that they’ve hired Shaun Escayg as the game’s Creative Director. Escayg was previously employed by Naughty Dog, where he served as the Creative Director on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, as well as the Animation Supervisor on The Last of Us in addition to his role.
Of course, because this is an Avengers project, it’s possible that Escayg allowed himself to be captured so that he could then unleash his diabolical scheme from inside Crystal Dynamics. It’s what Loki would do.
“We’re committed to delivering an incredible, completely original Avengers experience to our gamers, and that means we are always looking to add amazing developers to our existing best in class studio talent,” said Scot Amos, the Co-Head at Crystal Dynamics. “As development progresses, our studio continues to grow. The tremendous progress we’ve made on The Avengers Project further drives us toward our goal of crafting something all Marvel fans will be proud of, and will play for years to come. We can’t wait to show you what we mean in the future.”
Crystal Dynamics added a total of 15 new faces to the Avengers Project team, and in addition to Escayg, they also hired Stephen Barry (formerly of Visceral Games), as well as veteran developers from Eidos Montreal and DICE.
“We recently hired fifteen world-renowned industry veterans, spanning production leadership, animation, design, art and engineering, who have previously worked on games such as Batman: Arkham Origins, Dead Space, Star Wars: Battlefront, and many more.” said Ron Rosenberg, the Co-Head at Crystal Dynamics. “Their AAA experience adds to an already deep roster, making us well-positioned to deliver on the ambitious goals we’ve set for ourselves with The Avengers Project. It’s a stellar addition of many people who fit incredibly well into our wheelhouse of building game experiences we all love.”
If all goes according to plan, we should learn more about The Avengers Project later this year.
Sqaure Enix: Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Avengers Project will be released “in the next three years or so”
A few months ago, Square Enix told their European investors that it was likely Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake wouldn’t be released until 2018 at the earliest. Today, the publisher has revealed that even that forecast might be too optimistic.
During Square Enix’s most recent quarterly financial report, President Yosuke Matsuda discussed the company’s upcoming lineup and once again stated that Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake, as well as The Avengers Project, wouldn’t launch in 2017. But then he went on to add, “We plan to launch each of these upcoming titles in the next three years or so.”
Yikes. That means there’s a very real possibility that some combination of Kingdom Hearts III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and/or The Avengers Project could be pushed back all the way to 2019.
Hopefully Square Enix has better news about their 2017 release schedule at this year’s E3 Expo, which kicks off on June 13, just a little over two weeks from now.
Square Enix and Marvel team up for multi-game Avengers Project
It’s the team-up you never thought you’d see! Marvel Entertainment has announced a multi-title collaboration with Square Enix to develop and publish original games based on your favorite Marvel superheroes. Naturally, this partnership will begin with something currently known as The Avengers Project:
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.
We’ll have to wait until 2018 to learn more about The Avengers Project, but we do know that it’ll be co-developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. While I’m sure a lot of fans were hoping to see a Marvel Universe in Kingdom Hearts III, a mature and action-packed adventure starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes from the creators of Tomb Raider and Deus Ex is a pretty great consolation prize.
Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Games & Innovation, Jay Ong, is pretty excited about the partnership too:
“By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced. The Avengers Project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games a key part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest superheroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”
