PS Store Today: The Elder Scrolls Online, Lego Jurassic World, Gradius, more
Only a small number of new releases were added to the PlayStation Store today, but they include a pair of games that are both big in their own way.
The Elder Scrolls Online is Bethesda’s first attempt at creating an Elder Scrolls MMO. First released for the PC last year, The Elder Scrolls Online makes its PS4 debut today without any of those pesky subscription costs usually associated with MMOs. Players will be able to make a one-time purchase and then dive in to all the game has to offer including adventurous quests or crafting quality goods.
This week’s second big game will be available Friday and its Lego Jurassic World for the PS3, PS4, and Vita. In addition to including Lego-ized versions of all four films, Lego Jurassic World also gives players the opportunity to play as the massive Tyrannosaurus Rex… with its itty-bitty arms.
In other new release news, Gradius joins the PS4’s Arcade Archives line and Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy is out for the Vita. Gradius is, of course, one of the forerunners of the space shooter genre and Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy is the latest JRPG from NIS America, so you can expect plenty of superheroic high schoolers, evil demons, and an alternate dimension full of bad goings-on.
Yup, goings-on. More information on all of these games can be found after the break and a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons and discounts can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)
New Releases: Elder Scrolls Online, Lego Jurassic World, Operation Abyss, More
While Bethesda is getting ready to deliver one of the biggest E3 Press Conferences of the year next week, they still found the time to bring The Elder Scrolls Online to the PS4 and Xbox One this Tuesday. The MMO has ditched its subscription model and only requires a one-time purchase to experience everything it has to offer. So if you’ve ever wanted to “battle, craft, fish, steal, siege, or explore” in an Elder Scrolls game with other people, now’s your chance.
Also available this week is Lego Jurassic World, an adaptation of the four Jurassic Park films with Lego characters filling in for Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Players can escape the dinos this week on practically every current platform including the 3DS, PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Must go faster… Must go faster… Must go faster…
The PS Vita will receive two more new games this week in the form of Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy and Terraria. Operation Abyss is a dungeon crawler from NIS America that includes high school students, demonic monsters, an eerie alternate reality underneath Tokyo, and killer robots. That doesn’t exactly make it unique among JRPGs, but hey, killer robots! And Terraria is the sandbox game that lets you dig, fight, and build in a charming side-scroller that everyone already seems to love.
Finally this week, Nvidia will release their Nvidia Shield Pro microconsole. If the idea of an Android-powered console that can also stream PC games to your TV is your idea of a good time, the Nvidia Shield Pro is apparently the best way to do that.
Elder Scrolls Online to get June 9 release on PS4/Xbox One; Bethesda ends monthly fee
Bethesda has announced that some changes to the way you play will be coming soon to The Elder Scrolls Online. But first, they’ve also confirmed that the MMO will launch for the PS4 and the Xbox One in a special “Tamriel Unlimited” edition on June 9.
“Tamriel Unlimited” will serve as the basis of Bethesda’s new philosophy for The Elder Scrolls Onlibe going forward. Beginning March 17, the publisher will discontinue the game’s monthly fee for all players in a special update. For new players, this means that a one-time purchase of the game disc is all that’s required to jump into the world of The Elder Scrolls Online.
However, an optional subscription tier will still exist for those who want it. The ESO Plus plan will offer access to “exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of crowns to use in the store, and all DLC game packs.” All current players will automatically be enrolled in ESO Plus after the “Tamriel Unlimited” update in March.
The “Tamriel Unlimited” edition of the game (on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One) will include all of its updates and content additions, including the Justice and Champion systems. For players looking to get the most out of The Elder Scrolls Online, Bethesda also plans to offer optional downloadable content in the future and an in-game Crown Store for the purchase of customization items.
To celebrate this good news, Bethesda has released a new cinematic trailer, “The Confrontation,” for The Elder Scrolls Online. It’s been embedded above.
Console version of The Elder Scrolls Online delayed to late 2014/early 2015
The Elder Scrolls Online was originally scheduled to launched for the PS4 and Xbox One next month, but it looks like that won’t be happening now. Developer ZeniMax Online Studios has confirmed, via a short statement on the Bethesda Blog, that the team needs “about six months” to bring the console version up to snuff:
We continue to work on the console versions of ESO, and game development has been progressing steadily, but we are still working to solve a series of unique problems specific to [the PS4 and Xbox One]. Integrating our systems with each console manufacturer’s networks — which are both different from the PC/Mac system as well as different from each other—has been a challenging process. It has become clear that our planned June release of the console versions isn’t going to be possible. Though we have made great progress, we have concluded that we’ll need about six months to ensure we deliver the experience our fans expect and deserve.
To make amends for this delay, Bethesda is giving PS4 and Xbox One owners a chance to begin playing on the PC now and switch to the console version of their choice at a discounted rate. To qualify for this special offer, you’ll need to purchase the PC version of The Elder Scrolls Online by the end of June. Once the PS4/Xbox One version is released (tentatively scheduled for late 2014/early 2015), you’ll be able to transfer your character(s) to a digital version of the game for $20. Your transfer will also include an extra 30 days of game time.
Bethesda and ZeniMax Online Studios have promised they will keep us informed on all the pertinent information related to the console launch of The Elder Scrolls Online including “additional details regarding character transfers, specific offer dates, when you can expect console beta to start, and of course, when ESO on consoles will launch.”
New Releases: The Elder Scrolls Online, MLB 14: The Show, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace
Just three new retail releases this week, but all three can be considered very important to somebody.
Bethesda will release The Elder Scrolls Online for the PC on April 4. The MMORPG, the first for the franchise, has been a long time coming and fans are eager to see if it can stack up to the Skyrim and Oblivion. The Elder Scrolls Online is also in development for the PS4 and Xbox One and will be available in June.
With 2K dropping out of the baseball simulation competition, Sony will be releasing the year’s only baseball simulation this year, MLB 14: The Show. The PS3 and Vita versions of the game will be released on April 1 with a PS4 version planned for May.
Finally this week, XSEED will bring their monster hunter, Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, to the PS3 and Vita. People like the series, so that qualifies as “important” in my book.
Bethesda unveils Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition, new cinematic trailer
A few days ago, Bethesda announced an impressive voice cast for The Elder Scrolls Online. Today, they’ve unveiled an equally impressive special edition for the game.
The “Imperial Edition” will be available in both digital and physical formats. The $79.99 Digital Edition will feature a variety of in-game gear including:
- Play as an Imperial: Become an Imperial and play in any Alliance. Gain unique bonuses, crafting styles, gear, and more.
- White Imperial Horse: Summon this Imperial mount and journey through Tamriel with speed.
- Mudcrab Vanity Pet: Explore Tamriel with a mudcrab pet scuttling along by your side.
- Rings of Mara: Complete the Ritual of Mara with a friend and receive an experience bonus when you play together.
The Physical Edition has been priced slightly higher, $99.99, but it will include all the Digital Edition content as well as several goodies you can touch and feel:
- Molag Bal Statue: A 12” statue featuring Molag Bal, Daedric Prince of domination and enslavement.
- The Improved Emperor’s Guide to Tamriel: A 224-page illustrated guide annotated by the Imperial scholar, Flaccus Terentius.
- Physical Map of Tamriel: A 21” x 26” printed map detailing Alliance-controlled zones and the ultimate conquest: Cyrodiil.
- Steelbook Packaging: A limited edition steel case decorated in the color of the Imperials.
Players who pre-order either edition (or the $59.99 Standard Edition) will also receive the Explorer’s Pack, a special bit of DLC that includes a Scuttler vanity pet, four bonus treasure maps, the ability to play as any of the nine races in any Alliance, and five days of Early Access ahead of the game’s April 4 launch. The Elders Scrolls Online will also be available for the PS4 and Xbox One in June.
And if you’re desperate for more ESO, we’ve got a brand new cinematic trailer, “The Arrival,” after the break. (more…)
Elder Scrolls Online voice cast includes Kate Beckinsale, John Cleese, Malcolm McDowell, and many more
Bethesda never skimps when it comes to hiring actors and actresses for the vocal roles in their games. The Elder Scrolls Online is no different.
“In The Elder Scrolls tradition, we sought world class talent to add a deep and enriching component to the immersive world the series offers players,” said Game Director Matt Firor. “This extraordinary group of actors helps bring the distinctive characters in The Elder Scrolls Online to life.”
So what will The Elder Scrolls Online’s cast of characters look like? Well…
- Cadwell (John Cleese) is a cheerful and endearingly mad lost soul who is not afraid of anyone, even a Daedric Prince.
- High King Emeric (Bill Nighy) is a merchant prince whose luck and determination won him the throne.
- Queen Ayrenn (Kate Beckinsale) is the leader of the Aldmeri Dominion and Queen of the High Elves. She is far more comfortable with a blade than her crown.
- Abnur Tharn (Alfred Molina) is a wily old wizard and politician who is the head of the Empire’s Elder Council, and the de facto power behind the Ruby Throne.
- Azura (Lynda Carter) is the Daedric Princess of Dusk and Dawn from Skyrim who is a popular part of Elder Scrolls lore.
- The Prophet (Michael Gambon) is a mysterious blind man who guides the player through their journey to retrieve their soul.
- Molag Bal (Malcolm McDowell) is an evil Daedric god from another plane who schemes to enslave the mortal souls of Tamriel.
- Jorunn the Skald King (Peter Stormare) is an unexpected monarch who led his people into an unlikely alliance.
- Mannimarco (Jim Ward) is a renegade High Elf wizard exiled from the realm for raising the dead and the world’s most powerful necromancer.
- Lyris Titanborn (Jennifer Hale) is a Nord half-giant, who, along with the Prophet, aids the player on their journey.
- Sai Sahan (Kevin Michael Richardson) is a noble martial artist and master swordsman.
While most of these actors need no introduction (Alex DeLarge! Mr. Monty Python! Doc Ock! Wonder Woman! Dumbledore!), their characters might. So Bethesda put together the above video to introduce you to the characters they play and (if need be) the actors who play them.
The Elder Scrolls Online will be available for the PC on April 4 with a PS4 and Xbox One version to follow in June.
The Elder Scrolls Online will be released on April 4
Bethesda has announced that The Elder Scrolls Online will be released for the PC and Mac on April 4, 2014. In honor of the good news, Game Director Matt Firor has posted an update on ESO’s progress at ElderScrollsOnline.com:
Game development is coming along very well. We completed major systems development, and are focusing on making this the Elder Scrolls game you expect: polishing the hundreds and hundreds of hours of content, making combat even more fun and responsive, fixing quest issues, and much, much more. In fact, we plan on spending the next few months before launch reacting to the latest feedback from internal and external testers and gameplay data we have collected.
The Elder Scrolls Online will also be available for the PS4 and Xbox One, but console gamers will have to wait until June 2014 to explore the massive world the Zenimax Online team is building. But everyone can enjoy the game’s new trailer, “War in Cyrodiil,” which has been embedded above.
