Bethesda adding Kinect support to Skyrim
In a few weeks, yelling “Fus Ro Dah!” as you play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim won’t just result in snickers from your housemates. If you’re gaming on an Xbox 360 and you’ve got a Kinect sensor, that Dragon Shout (and over 200 more commands) will be recognized by the game.
Kinect support will be added through a free title update that’ll be available later this month. Bethesda plans to release the full list of voice commands soon, but for now, here’s how they’re going to integrate your Kinect sensor into the world of Skyrim:
Adding a new dimension to Skyrim’s gameplay, the Kinect for Xbox 360 integration offers Voice Commands throughout the game including Dragon Shouts, Hotkey Equipping, Follower Commands, and all Menus (Items, Magic, Map, Barter, Container, Favorites, and Skills). With Voice Commands, quickly create and load saves during gameplay and access menus and inventories. Skyrim’s Kinect for Xbox 360 Support also adds new functionality including special map functions, additional hotkey options, and the ability to sort inventory items by name, weight, and value.
Hopefully they’ll also add in a command that kills your character instantly if you say “Then I took an arrow to the knee.”
Skyrim takes home Game of the Year honors at 2012 GDC Awards
Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took home the coveted Game of the Year award at this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards, but Valve’s Portal 2 was the big winner of the night. The story of Chell, GLaDOS, and Wheatley won Best Audio, Best Game Design, and, of course, Best Narrative.
The other big winner of the night was Supergiant Games and Bastion. The title from the small seven-man team was awarded Best Downloadable Game as well as Best Debut.
A trio of special awards were also handhed out last night:
- Epic Mickey and Deus Ex developer Warren Spector received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Atari’s Dave Theurer received the Pioneer Award for his work on Tempest and Missile Command.
- Lawyers Ken Doroshow and Paul M. Smith were presented with the Ambassador Award for their defense of the game industry in the Supreme Court case (Brown v. EMA/ESA) that established First Amendment protection for video games.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences handed out the Interactive Achievement Awards for the 15th consecutive year on February 9 and, not surprisingly, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came away the big winner.
The RPG practically swept all of the major awards including Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, and Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering. It also took home RPG of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Story.

With no new releases, Modern Warfare 3 leads the January 2012 NPD report
With their January 31 release date, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soul Calibur V missed the cutoff date for the monthly NPD report, so Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 emerges victorious once again.
Infinity Ward’s latest shooter was followed by string of titles that have been racking up big sales all Winter including Just Dance 3 (#2), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (#3), NBA 2K12 (#4), and Battlefield 3 (#5). And a #8 finish for Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure capped off a strong 2011 for the toy/video game hybrid, including 22% of all accessory sales.
With no major new releases last month, game and hardware sales for January 2012 dropped 38% from the year before when Dead Space 2, which explains the large number of holdovers from 2011.

Skyrim Creation Kit and High-Resolution Texture Pack now available
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s Creation Kit and High-Resolution Texture Pack are now available for free via Steam.
Players can now “upload, download, and install custom content through the Skyrim Workshop.” What I’m wondering is: could the legends be true?
The Skyrim Creation Kit gives players even more to explore
So you’ve poured hundreds of hours into the land of Skyrim. You’ve fought civil wars, shouted dragons out of the sky, and accidentally lit a few villages on fire (you say accidentally, but your evil cackling has made me question that). You’ve fulfilled your destiny as the Dragonborn and smote Alduin on the mountainside.
What now?
Just when you thought the land of Skyrim had enough to do, Bethesda plans to roll out the Skyrim Workshop and Creation Kit “soon.” Like the Elder Scrolls Construction Set before it, the Creation Kit puts the software used to develop the game right into your eager little hands. Didn’t think the Throat of the World was tall enough? Add a few hundred feet. Wish there was a cabin in the woods with NPC’s spouting lines from Evil Dead? Do it. The world of Skyrim is a sandbox, and you are now Akatosh.
Sadly, all the wonderful mods that people are sure to make will only be available on the PC version of the game. But, maybe if we are nice, Bethesda will collect the best ones and provide them as delicious DLC for all the good console Dragonborn.
