The Evil Within terrifies the Tokyo Game Show with a new trailer
Shinji Mikami, “The Father of the Survival Horror Game,” is hard at work on his next gore-riffic game, The Evil Within. Part of that work includes plans to showcase the game at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. But for those that can’t make the trip across the Pacific, Bethesda has released a new story/gameplay trailer for the title. Be sure and check it out above, but you might want to leave the lights on.
The Evil Within will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One sometime next year.
Shinji Mikami wants to scare you with The Evil Within’s gameplay
The PlayStation Blog hung out with Bethesda’s Pete Hines during this year’s E3 Expo and he proudly showed off Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within. The Resident Evil creator is returning to survival horror in a big way and this quote from Hines sums up why that’s a very good thing:
“[Shinji Mikami’s] got some pretty twisted, warped ideas on how to scare people. And you know, that’s one of the things that he’s talked about. What used to scare people, like back when he created Resident Evil 1, doesn’t really work today. Things like blood and guts and gore… that stuff is in all kinds of games now. […] So you have to think of new ways to shake people up and some of the creations that he and his team have come up with are going to be introduced along the way so that just when you feel like you wrapped your head around it… OK, I can’t possibly see anything more horrifying than that last thing, here comes something else.”
I highly recommend watching the gameplay walkthrough/interview above. But be sure the lights are on.
The first The Evil Within screenshots and details are within
Last week, Bethesda announced that the legendary Shinji Mikami is working on the upcoming survival horror title The Evil Within. Yesterday more details about the game plus some frightful screenshots of the title has been revealed.
In The Evil Within you play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos, he comes across unnatural forces around an asylum and, after being knocked unconscious, Sebastian wakes up in a world where monsters really do exist.
Speaking to IGN earlier this week, Mikami-San spoke of his desire to bring back the survival horror genre saying, “[T]he thing that I want to focus on [with The Evil Within] is having the perfect balance between horror and action.” He also spoke about how having limited ammo brings excitement to the game and he mentioned the game will lack heavy weapons like assault rifles to blast through your foes.
The Evil Within releases in 2014 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and “next-generation consoles.” You can check out the first screenshots after the break. (more…)
More The Evil Within details revealed by Bethesda Japan
With less than 24 hours to go before IGN publishes their “exclusive” preview of The Evil Within, Bethesda Japan has revealed a few additional details about the game, which will be known in Japan as Psychobreak. Siliconera was able to translate all the details:
The two arrive at a gruesome crime scene and out there is a mysterious and powerful force lurking in the shadows. One by one, other police officers are killed right before Sebastian’s eyes. Suddenly, something attacks Sebastian and he’s knocked unconscious. When he comes to he awakens in horrifying world with monsters wandering around. Your goal in The Evil Within is to first survive and second solve the mystery behind this maleficent force.
Besides the monstrous beings, the world of The Evil Within will be populated with a variety of traps and “[background] elements like walls, hallways, doors, and rooms” will morph and change in real time. Finally, the game will be powered by id Software’s latest engine, id Tech 5, when its released next year for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and “next-generation consoles.”
Shinji Mikami’s Zwei is actually the very creepy The Evil Within
Shinji Mikami has a vision for his next game and it has nothing to do with cartoony superheroes or quirky brawlers or futuristic supersoldiers. Instead, it is a vision of pure, unrelenting terror. Mikami’s next game is a survival horror game that will be known as The Evil Within. It’ll be released for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and “next-generation consoles” sometime in 2014.
“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,” said Mikami. “My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.”
IGN will publish an exclusive preview of the game on Monday, but for now, take a look at the game’s live-action announcement trailer. It is just dripping with surreal scenery and is something that only the father of the Resident Evil series could create. The Evil Within was previously codenamed “Zwei” (the German word for “two”) and it’s not hard to connect the two titles with the demonic child imagery throughout the trailer including the bloody “birth” of a woman with four arms.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to turn on all the lights in my house (and yes, I realize it’s daytime).
Shinji Mikami’s Zwei is Bethesda’s mystery project, which will be unveiled tomorrow
Bethesda has dropped another bizarre video onto Vine (which you can find after the break) with the promise of more information to come tomorrow on IGN. But IGN plays by their own rules and let the cat out of the bag early, revealing that the mystery game is actually Shinji Mikami’s Zwei.
According to IGN, they will reveal the official title of Tango Gameworks’ first game, as well as a teaser trailer for the title, at 8 AM (Eastern Time).
As the creator of Resident Evil, Mikami is no stranger to horrific imagery and the three mini-teasers Bethesda has revealed so far (the first two can be seen here) definitely ping the creep-o-meter. I can’t wait to get a look at the full game. (more…)
What is going on in these bizarre teasers from Bethesda?
Yesterday, the publisher behind Skyrim, Dishonored, and Fallout 3, Bethesda Softworks, dropped a bizarre teaser on Vine for something, but what is it teasing? The video features images of barbed wire and a record playing over some music by Bach:
Today, they uploaded another bizarre video. This time we get burning flowers, and what also looks like man a hanging from a tree… (more…)
Resident Evil creator signs with Bethesda to create survival horror game Zwei
Shinji Mikami, the famed creator of the Resident Evil series, has revealed the first tiny morsels of his next project, Zwei.
Zwei, which is German for “two,” has been described as a survival horror game, which seems like a natural fit. The game is in development at Mikami’s new studio, Tango Gameworks, and the image to your left represents “a collage of different environments […] to give a feel for the tone and the direction the production is taking.”
Development on Zwei is still in the very early stages, but Mikami is confident it’ll match the expectations gamers have for his work: “A true ‘survival horror’ game is one in which the player confronts and overcomes fear. I’ve found my focus and once again I’m striving for pure survival horror [with Zwei]. I am being very hands-on to see that the quality is there. Rest assured.”
Tango Gameworks is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bethesda, so they’ll be publishing the game in the US. However, owing to the early nature of development, Mikami wasn’t ready to announce which platforms it’ll appear on or when it’ll be released.
