The Last of Us returns to the top of the best-seller list in July 2014 NPD report

thelastofus-header

In previous years, the best-sellers chart for the month of July would normally be dominated by the latest entry in the NCAA Football series. But EA Sports canceled the series last Fall, so a new emperor is sitting upon the July Throne in 2014. Or rather, an emperor we’ve seen before in a spiffy new set of clothes.

This is a roundabout way of saying that the Remastered re-release of Sony’s The Last of Us (combined with more sales on the PS3) pushed the game to the top of the best-sellers chart. July was a pretty sparse month as far as new releases go, but 505’s Sniper Elite III also cracked the top ten. It was number eight… with a bullet.

You can check out July’s complete top ten list (which includes May releases Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 hanging tough in the top five) after the break. (more…)

The Last of Us Remastered, Rogue Legacy, R&C Collection Vita, more added to PS Store

thelastofus-ps4-header

One of the PS3’s greatest games is now available on the PS4 as Sony has added The Last of Us Remastered to the PlayStation Store in their latest weekly update. The Remastered edition of The Last of Us includes everything that made the original game great as well as both Map Packs (Abandoned Territories and Reclaimed Territories) and the Left Behind single-player expansion.

This week also marks the beginning of the PlayStation Store Play promotion and Cellar Door’s Rogue Legacy is the first game on the docket. Rogue Legacy is a platformer with roguelike elements (which the developer refers to as “rogue-lite”). The game is Cross-Play compatible (PS3, PS4, and Vita) and features a procedurally generated quest with “wicked sweet fart jokes.”

Speaking of the Vita, several new titles are now available for Sony’s handheld, but this week’s big new release is Ratchet & Clank Collection, a portable compilation of the duo’s first three PS2 adventures. If you’d prefer something a little newer, WB Games released Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, based on the brand-new television show, for the Vita yesterday.

You can find more on all of these titles (and a few other new releases) after the break. And for a full breakdown of this week’s new game add-ons, please head over to the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

First The Last of Us movie details explode out of Comic-Con 2014

thelastofus-cc14movieposterBack in March, we learned that Sony Pictures would be producing a Last of Us movie adaptation through their Screen Gems subsidiary. During this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, the studio revealed a bit more about their plans for the film, including this awesome teaser poster.

Sam Raimi, who will be producing the film, spoke to the gathered crowd alongside Naughty Dog Creative Director Neil Druckmann. Druckmann is also writing the screenplay, which Raimi believes will be “very true” to the game. The pair revealed that they’re currently in the process of whittling down a 15-hour game into a feature-length movie. And one of the things that may be changed is the ending.

The producers haven’t signed anyone to the cast yet, however they did say they’ve talked to Maisie Williams (Ayra Stark from Game of Thrones) about playing Ellie. The crowd roared its approval and even started up a “Bruce Campbell For Joel” campaign, but Raimi said that was unlikely. However, everyone’s favorite Evil Dead star will have “a place” in the film.

Finally, Raimi announced that the movie is still “years away” and that he won’t be directing. Instead, Druckmann is the person who is in charge of choosing the director. I wonder if Fede Alvarez (the director of the 2013 Evil Dead reboor/sequel) is available?

New Releases: Last of Us Remastered, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, Sacred 3 PC

thelastofus-header

Take heed fellow video game fans, the month of July is almost over! It’s been a rough few weeks for the retail release report, but 2014’s seventh month looks to go out with a bit of a bang. That’s because Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Remastered, a PS4 re-release of the 2013 blockbuster, will be available in stores this week. If you haven’t experienced the story of Joel, Ellie, and their fight to survive a post-apocalyptic America yet, now’s the time.

Also available this is the PC version of Sacred 3, the latest entry in the action RPG series that began in 2008. Sacred 3 will also be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early August.

Finally this week, WB Games and TT Games will bring Lego Ninjago: Nindroids to the 3DS and Vita. The game sequel, which is based on the animated series Lego Ninja Rebooted, will add a sci-fi twist to the popular Lego line.

August will be better, I promise.

Continue Countdown #2 – The Evil Within, Borderlands: Pre-Sequel, Super Mario 20, More

The second episode of Warp Zoned’s “Continue Countdown” is now available to watch through our YouTube channel. It’s a PAX East kind of show as Editor-In-Chief John Scalzo, Staff Writer Mike Ryan, and special guest Adam Woolcott discuss the blandness of The Evil Within, the bizarreness of The Behemoth’s Game 4, and the baffling choice to put Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The trio also delves into the Console War Between the PS4 and Xbox One, next-gen remakes like The Last of Us Remastered, and whether the inclusion of Marvel characters will affect our decision to purchase Disney Infinity 2.0. Finally, they looked at yet another piece of Beyond Good & Evil 2 concept art, the release date gap between the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. 4, and the quasi-announcement of Super Mario Bros. 20.

Naughty Dog details Grounded Bundle, the final DLC for The Last of Us

thelastofus-header

Naughty Dog is readying the third (and final) DLC release for The Last of Us, and now they’re finally ready to talk about it. The Grounded Bundle will be available as a free download for Season Pass holders and as five separate DLC packs for everyone. All Grounded Bundle content will also be included in The Last of Us Remastered for the PS4.

The centerpiece of the Grounded Bundle is Grounded Mode ($4.99), a brutal new challenge for the single-player campaign that ups the difficulty to new heights. According to Naughty Dog, the AI in Grounded Mode is “relentless, smart, and brutal” making survival “near impossible.” To showcase their toughness, players will receive a new Trophy upon the completion of Grounded Mode.

The bundle will also include the Reclaimed Territories Map Pack ($9.99), which will add four new maps to the game’s multiplayer mode. “Wharf,” “Capitol,” “Coal Mine,” and “Water Tower” will reintroduce players to locations that are “familiar yet unfamiliar” to those who have completed the single-player campaign.

The Grounded Bundle will include five new weapons. Four will be available as part of the Survivalist Weapon Bundle ($5.99) and a single gun, the Full-Auto Rifle, will be available as a free download for all The Last of Us players. If you spring for the Survivalist Weapon Bundle, you’ll receive the Specter, Double Barrel, Enforcer, and Launcher.

Finally, a pair of Skills packs ($3.99 each) will be included in the Grounded Bundle. The Situational Survival Skills Bundle will enhance your maneuverability while the Professional Survival Skills Bundle will make you a more deadly combatant.

Naughty Dog has announced a release date for the Grounded Bundle yet, but they did announce that the Last of Us Season Pass will no longer be available after May 13, so a May/June release (ahead of the Remastered version’s “Summer” launch) is likely.

More details about all the maps, weapons, and Skills can be found after the break. (more…)
