The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Review: Revisiting the Temple of Time
Remember the first time you ever saw the Deku Tree? Remember how immersive Hyrule felt, with 64-bit graphics so realistic and detailed that you imagined you were actually inside Dodongo’s Cavern? Remember how pissed off you got with the Water Temple, how you couldn’t find that one last Small Key you needed to retrieve the Boss Key? It’s time to journey backwards a decade and a half to rediscover everything that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time held, and to experience the game in sleek, polished 3D. (more…)
New Releases: Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, Duke Nukem Forever, Alice Madness Returns, More
14 years, 1 month and 17 days.
That’s how long Duke Nukem Forever has been in development. An actual war against aliens that stole our babes wouldn’t take that long. But after the countless delays, the constant cries of “vaporware” and the empty promises of George Broussard… it’s finally here. And that’s all that matters because I always bet on Duke.
Interestingly enough, Duke Nukem isn’t the only oldtime franchise being resurrected this week. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, the fourth version of the classic game, will be available this week for the 3DS. Think about that, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998 and has been remade three times since Duke Nukem Forever was announced. Amazing.
And now that E3 is over, publishers are pushing out a ton of other big titles as well, including…
- Alice: Madness Returns, the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 action-adventure game American McGee’s Alice
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (3DS, DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), the movie-to-game adaptation of the final entry in the trilogy
- Wii Play: Motion, another minigames/controller package from Nintendo
- Child of Eden (Xbox 360), another light show from Q Entertainment
- Record of Agarest War Zero, a prequel to last year’s creeptastic RPG

New features highlighted in latest Zelda: Ocarina of Time trailer
The 3DS remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is just a few weeks away now and Nintendo has dropped a new trailer detailing all of the game’s new features including hint movies, a touch screen inventory and the Boss Challenge.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will be available in stores on June 19.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D extras announced, include Boss Rush mode
Hey! Listen! Link (and Navi) are happy to share that Nintendo has announced some of the extras for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. In addition to the Master Quest, which is a more challenging playthrough of the game, there’s also Boss Rush. In this mode, you can fight bosses you’ve already defeated, or even take them on in one nonstop battle. That sounds hardcore, which is just what OoT fans want right now.
CVG is also speculating that there will be a “Super Guide” as well. They quoted Nintendo as saying, “Players not so familiar to the Legend of Zelda series can also get a helping hand through bite sized videos available in-game, which will provide hints on how to solve puzzles encountered during your journey.”
This all sounds better and better. The remake, which is being developed by Grezza – helmed by Secret of Mana creator, Kouichi Ishii – will be out June 19.
Nintendo sells almost 400,000 3DS units in first week
Nintendo hit it out of the park again, selling nearly 400,000 3DS units in its first week on sale. But it couldn’t overtake its little brother as, according to Nintendo, the NPD group announced that the DS family sold over 460,000 units in the month of March, “propelled by sales of more than 1.3 million Pokémon White Version games and more than 1.1 million Pokémon Black Version games.” I guess that smear campaign isn’t working.
But 3DS owners have more to look forward to than just 3DS without the glasses. There’s a free system update coming soon that, besides allowing DSi and DSi XL owners to transfer their DSiWare games, will also give access to the Nintendo eShop. There’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was finally given a June 19 release date. And, finally, Netflix is coming to the 3DS, reportedly later this summer, which is awesome news for those of us with both an unlimited streaming membership as well as a 3DS.
Nintendo of America’s senior director of Corporate Communications, Charlie Scibetta, said that “Nintendo provides people with the best video game experiences, from 3D visuals without special glasses to a touch-screen interface to motion controls.” Nintendo reps are really heavy on the “3D without glasses” angle. Hey Charlie, I’ve got your new slogan: “No glasses? No problem.” Bam.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D leads Nintendo’s Summer schedule on June 19
The game everyone bought their 3DS for is just around the corner as Nintendo has announced a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The game is scheduled for release on June 19 and will include “new challenges not included in the original game,” newly implemented motion controls and the Ocarina of Time Master Quest. Awesome.
Also awesome is the newly released Spring/Summer game lineup for the 3DS, DS and Wii. You can check out the list of all the Nintendo-published and third party titles after the break. (more…)
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Kid Icarus playable at PAX East
The launch of the 3DS is less than three weeks away and Nintendo plans to woo the public with some big playable demos at this weekend’s PAX East event. The console maker plans to showcase playable demo stations for six launch day titles:
- Dead or Alive Dimensions
- Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
- Nintendogs + Cats
- Pilotwings Resort
- Steel Diver
- Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
That lineup is great and all, but Nintendo is also pulling out the big guns with playable versions of Kid Icarus: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Capcom’s Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.
If you’re in the Boston area, I’d suggest getting in line now.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D will include Master Quest
John D. Villarreal, the “Game God” of Conservative New Media, was at last week’s Game Developers Conference and got a chance to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. During his playtime, the Nintendo representative that was standing guard over the 3DS revealed that the re-release will include both the original game and the Master Quest arrange mode.
The Master Quest was previously only available as a pre-order bonus included with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker or as part of the Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition GameCube bundle, both of which will set you back quite a few rupees for a used copy.
