Warp Zoned’s 2015 Golden Pixel Awards: Honoring Our Favorite Games From Last Year

wzgoldenpixelawards-header

The conventional wisdom will tell you that 2015 was a down year for games and that all the good stuff got pushed back to 2016. But how can you trust the conventional wisdom when last year featured a ridiculously entertaining string of good games starring kid squids, gothic hunters, glitchy sci-fi heroes, and the lone survivor of a nuclear war. And all that’s before you dip into the millions of user-created levels from Super Mario Maker.

Yup, we think 2015 was a pretty great year for games, especially the ones that took home some hardware during our annual Golden Pixel Awards… (more…)

Halo 5: Guardians was the best-selling game of October 2015 according to the NPD Group

halo5guardians-header

The Master Chief’s sales performance was masterful last month as players flocked to stores to purchase Halo 5: Guardians, making it the best-selling game in October 2015.

The fifth entry in Microsoft’s long-running shooter series wasn’t the only new release to rule the charts last month. Players also pushed their gaming dollars towards the newly available Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (#3), WWE 2K16 (#5), Yoshi’s Woolly World (#8), and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (#9). And the battle of the (plastic instrument) bands ended with Harmonix’s Rock Band 4 taking the #10 spot and Guitar Hero Live failing to chart. This month is also notable for another no-show as Minecraft was knocked out of the top ten for the first time in a long time. But it’ll surely climb the ranks again as the holiday season approaches.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, The NPD Group’s Liam Callahan confirmed that the game industry saw a year-over-year sales increase thanks to Halo 5 and the debut of Microsoft’s Xbox One Elite Controller: “Overall sales across physical software, hardware, and accessories experienced a modest 2% growth in October 2015 compared to October 2014. This was driven entirely by accessory sales, which grew by 18%, or just under $30 million.”

Halo 5 also helped sales of Microsoft’s Xbox One triumph over Sony’s PS4 on the monthly sales charts for the first time all year. Even more impressive, this happened after Sony officially dropped the price on the PS4.

The NPD Group’s complete top ten for October 2015 can be found after the break. (more…)

Sony is dropping the price of the PS4 to $350

ps4-header

If you haven’t jumped onto the PS4 bandwagon just yet, now’s the time. Sony just announced a price cut for all PS4 bundles (via the PlayStation Blog) that will go into effect tomorrow, October 9.

The basic PS4 bundle will receive a permanent $50 discount, dropping from its current price of $399.99 to $349.99. This new pricing scheme also includes the upcoming bundles for Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (available October 9) and Star Wars: Battlefront (available November 17).

Sony is also slashing the price on a trio of upcoming Limited Edition bundles. The Star Wars: Battlefront bundle with the amazing Darth Vader PS4, as well as the Disney Infinity: Star Wars bundle, will now be priced at $399.99 (originally $449.99). Both will be available in mod-November.

Finally, the 1TB PS4 included in the Call of Duty: Black Ops III bundle will be priced at $429.99, a $20 drop from the original $449.99 price. This Limited Edition will launch alongside Black Ops III on November 6.

This will be the first major price drop for Sony’s PS4, coming roughly a year after Microsoft’s temporary (and then permanent) price drop for the Xbox One.

PS Store Today: Uncharted Collection (Friday), Rock Band 4, Transformers Devastation, more

uncharted3-header

Nathan Drake is back this week as Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will be available to download through the PlayStation Store on Friday, October 9. The Nathan Drake Collection will mark the PS4 of the first three Uncharted games (Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves, and Drake’s Deception) and all players who purchase it will receive access to the beta for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Several other big releases are now available as part of this week’s PlayStation Store update and they’re available today:

  • Get out your old plastic instruments… Rock Band 4 (PS4) is the first new entry in the franchise in five years. Harmonix didn’t stray too far from the familiar Rock Band 4 in the jump to the PS4, even ensuring backwards compatibility with your old instruments and a vast majority of downloadable songs.
  • Transformers: Devastation (PS4, PS3) is a Transformers-themed brawler from Platinum Games that is… wait for it… based on the original Generation 1 era. Believe it or not, Devastation is the first G1 game to ever be released in North America.
  • Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance (PS4) is the latest strategy RPG from NIS America and the first entry in the series to be available for the PS4.
  • Finally this week, Super Meat Boy (PS4 + PS Vita Cross-Buy) makes his PlayStation debut as the titular character’s ultra-hard platformer is now available for the PS4 and Vita.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And, as always, a complete rundown of this week’s discounts and new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

New Releases: Rock Band 4, Uncharted Collection, Transformers Devastation, More

newreleases100615

It’s time to rock the world once more as Harmonix will release Rock Band 4 for the PS4 and Xbox One this week. In addition to the standard “Game Only” edition, the developer is also planning to replenish your stock of plastic instruments with a Rock Band 4: Guitar Bundle and a Band-In-A-Box Bundle.

Another big franchise that we’ll remember for centuries is coming back this week thanks to Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on the PS4. Also available as part of a 500GB PS4 + Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Bundle, the collection brings together Drake’s first three adventures and also includes an access code for the upcoming Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End beta.

And speaking of characters that have been popular for centuries, Activision and Platinum have teamed up to produce Transformers: Devastation, a cel-shaded action game based on the franchise’s “Generation 1” era. It looks gorgeous and it’ll be available for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Finally, somebody told me that people love Nintendo’s adorable Chibi-Robo and NIS America’s Disgaea series of strategy RPGs. Fans are in luck this week, as new entries in both franchises are set to be released this week. Chibi-Robo!: Zip Lash is a side-scrolling platformer for the 3DS, while Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance brings the series to the PS4 for the first time.

A complete list of this week’s new releases is available after the break. (more…)

Uncharted movie delayed to 2017; Resident Evil: Final Chapter set for Jan. 2017 premiere

uncharted3-header

The Uncharted movie is quickly turning into a teenage procrastinator, insisting they’ll come out of their room later, but with no immediate intention of coming out. Sony recently announced (via Variety) that the film has been delayed again, this time until June 30, 2017.

This news comes weeks after it was confirmed by Heroic Hollywood that director Seth Gordon had stepped away from the project. At least two different writers have worked on the script, and with Gordon’s departure, it’s currently being reworked for a third time. A new director has yet to be announced and the film has even struggled to find a lead actor.

We probably won’t see Nathan Drake until he’s rushing out of the door on June 30, 2017 clasping his belt with a piece of toast in his mouth, running to catch the bus. They’ll probably be some jumping involved as well.

In the same announcement, Sony confirmed that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which stars Milla Jovovich and is set to be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, will be released on January 27, 2017.

Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection coming to PS4 this October with Uncharted 4 beta access

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End won’t be released until next year, but Sony is hoping that gamers will want to replay Nathan Drake’s many adventures on the PS4 this Fall in Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Scheduled for release on October 9, The Nathan Drake Collection will bring Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception together in a single package.

The compilation will be developed by Bluepoint Games, who previously worked on the God of War Collection and The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection for Sony. For The Nathan Drake Collection, the developer will sharpen the graphics to 1080p/60FPS levels and add in better lighting, textures, and models. Bluepoint will add other improvements to all three games including a Photo Mode and new Trophies.

Players who pre-order Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will receive a pack of “iconic” Nathan Drake character skins and a pair of in-game guns: the Golden AK-47 and the Golden 92FS. Pre-purchasing a digital download through the PlayStation Store will add a PS4 Dynamic Theme to your goodie bag.

On top of that, everyone who purchases Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will also receive access to the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta. Sony plans to reveal more details about the beta, including when it’ll take place, at a later date.

Uncharted movie bumps Amazing Spider-Man 3 for a 2016 release

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Uncharted film will get a planned release on June 10, 2016, bumping The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back to 2018.

This may come as a surprise to some, given that the production team has changed directors and writers multiple times. From David O. Russell’s weird crime family concept, with DeNiro and Pesci as Nathan Drake’s non-canonical father and uncle, to Neil Burger’s short tenure as director, the production has been stuck in development hell for a while.

This version of the film is being written by David Guggenheim, not to be confused with Davis Guggenheim, director of An Inconvenient Truth. David Guggenheim has action credits under his belt with movies like Safe House, and Nicholas Cage vehicle Stolen.  Slightly more promising is the current director Seth Gordon, director of Horrible Bosses and the WarGames remake. More importantly for gamers, he directed the quintessential documentary about what a horrible person Billy Mitchell is (also Donkey Kong), King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

No word yet on whether or not the production team has made the right choice and decided to hire Nathan Fillion to play Drake.
